Book excerpt: This book, authored by K-4 elementary educators, working at a publicly funded non-profit charter school, illustrates the power of culturally responsive teaching and learning as it becomes embedded in the New York State Education Curriculum. Educators, families, and community members contributed to this unique program with the goal of enhancing learning environments by applying the languages and cultures of their students in their classrooms. Strong, carefully attentive, school leadership encouraged culturally responsive teaching and learning with the belief that children in this urban, economically stressed area could demonstrate significant academic and social/emotional gains. Readers of this book will witness culturally responsive lessons, family interviews, and whole school events that honor languages and cultures represented in the school. Sample classrooms’ culturally responsive lessons tied to the curriculum, are presented. Additionally, qualitative and quantitative student academic and affective gains are analyzed. Moreover, this book clearly demonstrates the talents, vision, and compassionate care given to children and their families by exceptional educators. A CRTL Montage was created for this book. It includes classrooms, children, teachers, family, and community members. Teachers collected CRTL experiences and presented them to Producer, Dean Meghan Miller and Director, Designer, Dean Pamela Smith. They also received support for the montage from Instructor Allen Lauricella, and Graduate Assistant Elizabeth Kenny, Syracuse University, Newhouse School. Book The 16 Taco

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pascale Joassart-Marcelli
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2021-10-09
  • ISBN : 0295749296
  • Pages : 284 pages

Download or read book The 16 Taco written by Pascale Joassart-Marcelli and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-10-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having “discovered” the flavors of barbacoa, bibimbap, bánh mi, sambusas, and pupusas, white middle-class eaters are increasingly venturing into historically segregated neighborhoods in search of “authentic” eateries run by—and for—immigrants and people of color. This interest in “ethnic” food and places, fueled by media attention and capitalized on by developers, contributes to gentrification, and the very people who produced these vibrant foodscapes are increasingly excluded from them. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, geographer Pascale Joassart-Marcelli traces the transformation of three urban San Diego neighborhoods whose foodscapes are shifting from serving the needs of longtime minoritized residents who face limited food access to pleasing the tastes of wealthier and whiter newcomers. The $16 Taco illustrates how food can both emplace and displace immigrants, shedding light on the larger process of gentrification and the emotional, cultural, economic, and physical displacement it produces. It also highlights the contested food geographies of immigrants and people of color by documenting their contributions to the cultural food economy and everyday struggles to reclaim ethnic foodscapes and lead flourishing and hunger-free lives. Joassart-Marcelli offers valuable lessons for cities where food-related development projects transform neighborhoods at the expense of the communities they claim to celebrate.

Book excerpt: Carrying baggage you don't need? When I was in college, I figured my life would come together around graduation. I’d meet a guy, have a beautiful wedding, and we'd buy a nice little house—not necessarily with a picket fence, but with whatever kind of fence we wanted. Whatever we decided, I would be happy. When I got out of college and my life didn’t look like that, I floundered, trying to get the life I had always dreamed of through career, travel, and relationships. But none of them satisfied me as I hoped. Like many twentysomethings, I tried to discover the life of my dreams, but instead I just kept accumulating baggage—school loans, electronics I couldn’t afford, hurt from broken relationships, and unmet expectations for what life was “supposed to be” like. Just when I had given up all hope of finding the “life I’d always dreamed about,” I decided to take a trip to all fifty states . . . because when you go on a trip, you can’t take your baggage. What I found was that “packing light” wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. This is the story of my trip and learning to live life with less baggage.

Book Much More Than a Learning Center

Download or read book Much More Than a Learning Center written by Ruth Prevost and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an educator, Much More Than a Learning Center presents a fun and educational method for setting up your Kindergarten classroom and creating activities to bring success to each and every student. Described by one of her principals as a "beehive of activity", this exciting system was developed by the author and teacher, Ruth Prevost. The book begins by clearly explaining how to set up the room and how to easily arrange and mix the students each day so everyone has the occasion to work with each of their classmates. The students not only receive in-depth studies in all the basics, but they also have many opportunities to dig deeper into activities they enjoy. In the lessons, the author includes her personal experiences of living overseas, travels, and her love of science. The entire year is conveniently presented in a chart that can be used as your lesson plans for the year or you can use the system's flexibility to include your own experiences and needs. Each activity is explained in simple terms and is supported with clear detailed illustrations. This system gives the teacher more time to work with the students individually as well as in groups, and it allows the children to learn at their own rate in a non-threatening environment because they know the routine, are relaxed, and have fun while learning.
