This book was released on 2003-10-21 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the increasing ratification of international conventions to prevent the use of child labour, ILO estimates indicate almost one quarter of the world's children aged 10-14 years and about twelve per cent of children aged 5-9 years are at work. Among these children, about 179 million are subject to the 'worst forms' of employment such as forced and bonded labour, trafficking, prostitution and other forms of exploitation. This report examines the reality of child labour around the world, the economic causes of child labour and implications for the future development of countries concerned; and considers effective mechanisms and policies to tackle the problem, at the international and national level, as well as private initiatives and corporate social responsibility.

Book International Labour Organization ILO IPEC Programme in Kenya

Download or read book International Labour Organization ILO IPEC Programme in Kenya written by Paschal Kizito Achatch Wambiya and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ILO believes that child labour is harmful to children and society. Consequently, the organization has programmes to eliminate it across the globe. One of the strategies used in the struggle is to make education and training available for children. This book examines such a programme implemented-Kenya between 1999 and 2006. The study concluded that though the projects were helpful in getting children to school, it is necessary to increase the resources and also support teachers, parents and guardians for substantial improvement in learning achievement. It is this social support that is crucial in keeping children in school and training institutions and therefore eliminating child labour. Some of the recommendations of the study were that members of the child labour committee should be trained on project management and children rights; resources should be increased to ensure meaningful interventions and those additional resources to be mobilized to initiate measures that would ensure continued support to children beyond primary education. To ensure sustainability, it is also recommended that projects be mainstreamed into ongoing Government programmes.
