Book excerpt: Tacitus and Bracciolini The Annals Forged in the XVth Century by John Wilson Ross The Annals and the History of Tacitus are like two houses in ruins: dismantled of their original proportions they perpetuate the splendour of Roman historiography, as the crumbling remnants of the Coliseum preserve from oblivion the magnificence of Roman architecture. Some of the subtlest intellects, keen in criticism and expert in scholarship, have, for centuries, endeavoured with considerable pains, though not with success in every instance, to free the imperfect pieces from difficulties, as the priesthood of the Quindecimvirs, generation after generation, assiduously, yet vainly, strove to clear from perplexities the mutilated books of the Sibyls. I purpose to bring, -parodying a passage of the good Sieur Chanvallon, -not freestone and marble for their restoration, but a critical hammer to knock down the loose bricks that, for more than four centuries, have shown large holes in several places. Tacitus is raised by his genius to a height, which lifts him above the reach of the critic. He shines in the firmament of letters like a sun before whose lustre all, Parsee-like, bow down in worship. Preceding generations have read him with reverence and admiration: as one of the greatest masters of history, he must continue to be so read. But though neither praise nor censure can exalt or impair his fame, truth and justice call for a passionless inquiry into the nature and character of works presenting such difference in structure, and such contradictions in a variety of matters as the History and the Annals. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Book Comparative Study of the Bible Myths and their Parallels in other Religions

Download or read book Comparative Study of the Bible Myths and their Parallels in other Religions written by T. W. Doane and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Study of the Bible Myths and their Parallels in other Religions is a study the Old and New Testament Myths and Miracles being compared to mythologies of other nations and religions of ancient times, taking in considering their origin and meaning. Comparing biblical myths to those of other nations of antiquity the author shows that many of the Bible tales, mainly about Jesus, and of other legends, are often copied or borrowed from the myths of other religions. The book gives a good history of how long the idea of the mythological nature of the Jesus in the New Testament has been noted.

Book Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions

Download or read book Bible Myths and Their Parallels in Other Religions written by Thomas William Doane and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1882 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Doane's thorough examination of Old and New Testament Biblical myths and legends, drawing parallels to stories belonging to older traditions, such as those of ancient Egypt. The central purpose of the text is to unite, in a single compendium, analysis of all the Bible myths which bear resemblance to earlier tales. Doane's system is practical; the myths are recounted, examined and compared against their apparent forebears in chronological order. The purpose is to demonstrate that religions share much in common with one another; while their themes and the names of figures change, the character of the tales and legends remains similar or even identical across centuries of lore. At the outset, Doane acknowledges that very little of this book is entirely original; what is special and unique to this work is its arrangement, and the systematic, readable manner in which the subject is tackled. Each chapter is amply annotated, that the reader may consult both the Bible and surviving texts of other religious works, plus previous scholarly researches into ancient mythologies. Perhaps most controversially, Doane focuses upon the tale of Christ. His birthplace, the events in which he was involved, the subject and message of his sermons, and his untimely death upon the crucifix are shown to mirror aspects of previous stories concerned prophets or holy men of other religious traditions.

Book The Annals of Tacitus Volume 1 Annals 1 1 54

Download or read book The Annals of Tacitus Volume 1 Annals 1 1 54 written by Cornelius Tacitus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in a four-volume edition of Tacitus Annals 1-6. The Annals are Tacitus' brilliant account of Roman imperial history from the death of Augustus to the death of Nero. Books 1-6 describe the reign of Tiberius. Professor Goodyear's introduction to the series deals concisely with the background to the Annals. He outlines the history of Tacitean scholarship to the present day and shows how Tacitus' historical judgements were sometimes distorted by his preoccupations with style and with the moral function of historical writing. The commentary attends equally to literary, historical and textual questions. There are several appendixes on topics of more specialized interest.
