Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the final decades of the ancient regime, prominent collectors in Paris commissioned and collected French paintings of the period, works by Greuze, Fragonard, David and others that together comprised 'l'Ecole Francoise' - the French School. In this book, an art historian discusses six of these collectors and the collections they assembled, showing that private patronage in this period was revitalized by this patriotic desire to collect contemporary art. Colin B. Bailey explains why a taste for modern art emerged at this time and how it was encouraged and fostered. Examining the relationship between artist and patron, he discusses the degree of influence these enlightened patrons and collectors expected to exercise when new works were being commissioned. Bailey shows that collectors of eighteenth-century French painting seem not to have made rigid distinctions between the various genres or styles of the Academy's practitioners. Instead, history paintings and genre paintings - both rococo and neo-classical - were exhibited proudly on their walls as superb examples of the French School.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940), one of the most admired post-impressionist artists, is best-known for his small easel paintings and their charming portrayals of everyday life. However, a major part of his work during his early life was the painting of large decorative panels in the Parisian homes of wealthy private patrons, produced between 1892 and 1912. These panels - some fifty in total - have been little studied, due principally to the inaccessibility of many of them and the impossibility of their being included in exhibitions.

Book Claude Monet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Virginia Spate
  • Publisher : Rizzoli International Publications
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book Claude Monet written by Virginia Spate and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 1992 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Monet is incontestably one of the greatest Impressionists, as well as being the most popular. Yet hitherto books on this great figure have been partial, concentrating either on aesthetic or on social aspects of his work without attempting a synthesis. Now Virginia Spate restores plenitude of meaning to Monet's paintings, examining the various ways in which they can be read; the tension between image and reality which energizes them; and the mysterious interactions between the work itself, its exhibition, promotion and sale, and its reception both in public and in private." "Based on a complete study of the artist's work - made possible as never before by recently published catalogues of his oeuvre - his surviving letters (nearly 3,000 in all) and contemporary documentary material, this is the fullest account available of a complex and influential man whose style changed and evolved considerably during his long career. Monet is considered as an intelligent and cultured being, a friend to writers such as Zola, Mallarme and Octave Mirbeau, fully informed as to the cultural and intellectual tendencies of his time. His often neglected figure paintings, always of family or friends, are analyzed alongside his landscapes, which ranged from timeless river scenes to steam-filled railway stations. Changes in his output in response to shifts in demand are linked to the new system of art dealers and to his financial situation. The France of Monet's youth and maturity is covered in depth, especially the traumatic legacy of the Franco-Prussian war and the Paris Commune; and his famous garden at Giverny is shown to be both a personal Utopia and a vital part of his creative processes. The dialectic of the real world and its representation in art is explored in detail as manifested in his splendid canvases - faithfully reproduced in over 130 colour plates." "This definitive treatment of a hugely important artist makes an indispensable contribution to the art history of Impressionism and the roots of modernism."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art

Download or read book Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art written by Darius A. Spieth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.
