Book Orthodox Christians in the Late Ottoman Empire

Download or read book Orthodox Christians in the Late Ottoman Empire written by Ayse Ozil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orthodox Christians, as well as other non-Muslims of the Ottoman Empire, have long been treated as insular and homogenous entities, distinctly different and separate from the rest of the Ottoman world. Despite this view prevailing in mainstream historiography, some scholars have suggested recently that non-Muslim life was not as monolithic and rigid as is often supposed. In an endeavour to understand the ties among Christians within the administrative, social and economic structures of the imperial and Orthodox Christian worlds, Ayşe Ozil engages in a rarely undertaken comparative analysis of Ottoman, Greek and European archival sources. Using the hitherto under-explored region of Hüdavendigar in the heartland of the empire as a case study, she questions commonplace assumptions about the meaning of ethno-religious community within a Middle Eastern imperial framework. Offering a more nuanced investigation of Ottoman Christians by connecting Ottoman and Greek history, which are often treated in isolation from one another, this work sheds new light on communal existence.

Book excerpt: Türkiye is located in an active seismic zone, and earthquakes are not uncommon in the country. The government and local authorities have taken measures to strengthen buildings and infrastructure in order to minimize the risk of damage from earthquakes, but the region remains vulnerable to seismic activity. On 6 February 2023 at 4.17 am local time, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake occurred near the city of Gaziantep in southern Türkiye. Its tremors were felt in the provinces of Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus and Iraq. Geospatial data from publicly available satellite imageries, very high-resolution aerial photographs, and information from national portals were collected and analyzed to assess the impact of the earthquake. The data were processed and analyzed using geospatial cloud computing tools. This report provides results on (1) damage proxy map (2) exposed population, (3) farmers exposure to earthquake, (4) map of cultivated land with 3 classes at 10 m resolution (Horticulture, Rainfed and irrigated), (5) Impacted agriculture infrastructure, (6) deformation map.

Book Arbitration s Age of Enlightenment

Download or read book Arbitration s Age of Enlightenment written by Cavinder Bull and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directly presenting the considered views of a broad cross-section of the international arbitration community, this timely collection of essays addresses the criticism of the arbitral process that has been voiced in recent years, interpreting the challenge as an invitation to enlightenment. The volume records the entire proceedings of the twenty-fifth Congress of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), held in Edinburgh in September 2022. Topics range from the impact of artificial intelligence to the role of international arbitration in restraining resort to unilateralism, protectionism, and nationalism. The contributors tackle such contentious issues as the following: time and cost; gender and cultural diversity; confidentiality vs. transparency; investor-State dispute settlement procedures; the proposed establishment of a permanent international investment court system; how cross-fertilisation across different disciplines may impact international arbitration; determining whether a document request seeks documents that are relevant and material to the outcome of a dispute; whether we would be better off if investment arbitration were to disappear; and implications for international arbitration of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There is consideration of global issues that are likely to give rise to disputes in the future, including climate change, environmental protection, access to depleting water resources, energy and mining transition, and human rights initiatives. Several contributions focus on developments in specific countries (China, India) and regions (Africa, the Middle East). Arbitrators, corporate counsel, and policymakers will appreciate this opportunity to engage with current thinking on key issues in international commercial and investment arbitration, especially given the diversity of thought presented by authors from all over the world.

Book Turkey s Integration into the European Union

Download or read book Turkey s Integration into the European Union written by Belgin Akçay and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations between Turkey and the European Union have a very long history. Officially, they began with the Ankara Agreement. Following the signature of this Agreement, the relationship has undergone many developments. Some authors compare this relation to a turbulent marriage; though it has its share of problems, it remains an ongoing one, and both parties have managed to stay together. The book is designed to include discussion of consumer protection law, competition law, the dispute settlement procedures, the principle of non-discrimination on grounds of nationality with regard to Turkish workers in the European Union and Union workers in Turkey, as well as an overview of Turkey-EU relations that consists of legal, political and economic assessments on Turkish accession to the European Union. This book aims to draw a framework regarding the Turkish Law and enable the readers to learn about Turkish Law. Though it could easily be stated that though there are certain points to be completed, most aspects of Turkish Law are in harmony with EU Law. Turkey has taken many important steps in the past 50 year history with the EU, and especially from the legal perspective, has fulfilled most of the important goals. Thus, readers will also have a vision of this development, and of Turkish Law as a whole, after reading this book.

Book Orhan Pamuk Secularism and Blasphemy

Download or read book Orhan Pamuk Secularism and Blasphemy written by Erdag Göknar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orhan Pamuk, Secularism and Blasphemy is the first critical study of all of Pamuk’s novels, including the early untranslated work. In 2005 Orhan Pamuk was charged with "insulting Turkishness" under Article 301 of the Turkish penal code. Eighteen months later he was awarded the Nobel Prize. After decades of criticism for wielding a depoliticized pen, Pamuk was cast as a dissident through his trial, an event that underscored his transformation from national literateur to global author. By contextualizing Pamuk’s fiction into the Turkish tradition and by defining the literary and political intersections of his work, Orhan Pamuk, Secularism and Blasphemy rereads Pamuk's dissidence as a factor of the form of his novels. This is not a traditional study of literature, but a book that turns to literature to ask larger questions about recent transformations in Turkish history, identity, modernity, and collective memory. As a corrective to common misreadings of Pamuk’s work in its international reception, Orhan Pamuk, Secularism and Blasphemy applies various analytical lenses to the politics of the Turkish novel, including gender studies, cultural translation, historiography, and Islam. The book argues that modern literature that confronts representations of the nation-state, or devlet, with those of Ottoman, Islamic, and Sufi contexts, or din, constitute "secular blasphemies" that redefine the politics of the Turkish novel. Concluding with a meditation on conditions of "untranslatability" in Turkish literature, this study provides a comprehensive and critical analysis of Pamuk’s novels to date.
