Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials management has become an important activity in both manu facturing and service organizations. Rapid changes in the industrial envi ronment, such as the introduction of automation and Just-In-Time, and demands for increased productivity and quality have increased the need for alI personnel to be concerned with total control of materials. Clearly this trend will continue, and materials management wilI play an increasingly vital role in organizational success, especialIy for operations that are be coming automated. Materials management will be more critical in many service organizations where the materials group has received little attention in the past. This book covers the basic materials management function and provides valuable insights into various other major functions related to it. We believe that each of these-manufacturing, marketing, finance, quaIity assurance, and engineering-is vitalIy involved in materiaIs management, and any coverage of the subject that excludes these functions offers too narrow a perspective. With increasing demand for materials managers, human resource re quirements will be satisfied by individuals trained within the discipline and by personnel who have worked in other fields. The dimensions of materials management have grown so rapidly that many practicing managers are not aware that they are fulfilling material management functions. It is impor tant that alI individuals have the basic knowledge required to perforrn their roles in these organizations.

Book Materials management

Download or read book Materials management written by G.K. Beckman-Love and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades the materials sector of an enterprise has been relatively un important, compared with the production and sales side, but it has gained in importance during the last 25-30 years. This is clearly indicated by the increas ing attachment of this sector to the commercial side of an enterprise, the delegation of materials-oriented tasks to highly qualified people, and -closely correlated -the integration of the materials sector with the key positions of a company's organizational hierarchy. The materials management area has become an interesting part of business life. Stimulating this development was the realization that an important part of company rationalization had been overlooked, namely, provision of ade quate supervision of the materials flow. This area was given particular atten tion, firstly, because the relatively high percentage of materials l:osts (the value of materials and cost of supervision) in the total production costs off ered the possibility of considerable cost reductions and liquidity improvem ents; and secondly, because effective supervision permits faster reactions to changes and reliable delivery times -essential considerations for a compe titive company. An important contribution to the realization of these possi bilities is found in an efficient organizational structure in combination with an integrated information system. Together, they provide coordinated super vision of the various control functions associated with the materials flow and a concentration of expertise.

Book Designing Soldier Systems

Download or read book Designing Soldier Systems written by John Martin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-20 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on contemporary human factors issues within the design of soldier systems and describes how they are currently being investigated and addressed by the U.S. Army to enhance soldier performance and effectiveness. Designing Soldier Systems approaches human factors issues from three main perspectives. In the first section, Chapters 1-5 focus on complexity introduced by technology, its impact on human performance, and how issues are being addressed to reduce cognitive workload. In the second section, Chapters 6-10 concentrate on obstacles imposed by operational and environmental conditions on the battlefield and how they are being mitigated through the use of technology. The third section, Chapters 11-21, is dedicated to system design and evaluation including the tools, techniques and technologies used by researchers who design soldier systems to overcome human physical and cognitive performance limitations as well as the obstacles imposed by environmental and operations conditions that are encountered by soldiers. The book will appeal to an international multidisciplinary audience interested in the design and development of systems for military use, including defense contractors, program management offices, human factors engineers, human system integrators, system engineers, and computer scientists. Relevant programs of study include those in human factors, cognitive science, neuroscience, neuroergonomics, psychology, training and education, and engineering.

Book Service Oriented Holonic and Multi Agent Manufacturing Systems for Industry of the Future

Download or read book Service Oriented Holonic and Multi Agent Manufacturing Systems for Industry of the Future written by Theodor Borangiu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific theme of the book is “Virtualisation – a multifaceted key enabler of Industry 4.0 from holonic to cloud manufacturing” which is addressed in the framework of cyber-physical system development. The book approaches cyber-physical systems for manufacturing with emergent digital technologies: Internet of Things, digital twins (based on the virtualization of production models embedded in the design, virtual commissioning, optimization and resilience of processes and fault tolerance of resources), big data, cloud control and computing, machine learning and cobots, that are applied in the book’s chapters to industry and service sectors such as manufacturing, energy, logistics, construction and health care. The novelty of this approach consists in interpreting and applying the characteristics of RAMI4.0—the reference architecture model of the Industry 4.0 framework—as combinations of virtualized cyber-physical system elements and IT components in life cycle value stream models. The general scope of the book is to foster innovation in smart and sustainable manufacturing and logistics systems and in this context to promote concepts, methods and solutions for the digital transformation of manufacturing through service orientation in holonic and agent-based control with distributed intelligence. The book’s readership is comprised by researchers and engineers working in the manufacturing value chain area who develop and use digital control solutions in the “Industry of the Future” vision. The book also addresses to master’s and Ph.D. students enrolled in Engineering Sciences programs.
