Book Monograph of Mitrephora Annonaceae

Download or read book Monograph of Mitrephora Annonaceae written by Aruna D. Weerasooriya and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The genus Mitrephora (Annonaceae) comprises 47 species of small to medium-sized trees, growing in tropical lowland and submontane forests throughout Southeast Asia. The centers of diversity lie in Borneo, where there are 12 species, and the Philippines, where there are 11 species. The flowers are pendent and hermaphroditic, with two whorls of petals, of which the outer petals are larger. The inner petals are apically con-nivent over the productive structures, forming a partially enclosed pollination chamber with small apertures between the basal claws of the petals that enable entry by pollinators. A field study of the pollination ecology of M. heyneana in Sri Lanka (the first such study for the genus) revealed pollination by small nitidulid beetles, although it is possible that other species may be fly-pollinated. This monograph is the first comprehensive taxonomic revi-sion of the genus. The work is based on a comprehensive study of comparative morphology and anatomy, including a survey of previously published work. Conservation assessments are provided for each species, according to current IUCN Red List categories and criteria. All species are mapped and many are illustrated with line drawings and/or photographs. Separate keys for flowering and fruiting material are included, as well as regional keys. Seven new species (M. amdjahii, M. endertii, M. kostermansii, M. multifolia, M. sorsogonensis, M. sundaica, and M. uniflora) and one new combination (M. macrocarpa) are proposed"--Publisher's description.

Book Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants

Download or read book Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants written by Armen Leonovich Takhtadzhi͡an and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of more than fifty years of research by the foremost living expert on plant classification, Diversity and Classification of Flowering Plants is an important contribution to the field of plant taxonomy. In the last decade, the system of classifying plants has been thoroughly revised. Instead of describing every individual family, Takhtajan includes descriptions in keys to families, which he calls "descriptive keys." The advantage of descriptive keys is that they give both the characteristic features of the families and their differences. The delimitation of families and orders drastically differs from the one accepted by the Englerian school and from the one accepted in Arthur Cronquist's system. Takhtajan favors the smaller, more natural families and orders, which are more coherent and better-defined, where characters are easily grasped, and which are more suitable for information retrieval and phylogenetic studies, including cladistic analysis (because it reduces polymorphic codings).

Book A Revision of the Tribe Antirrhineae

Download or read book A Revision of the Tribe Antirrhineae written by David Andrew Sutton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribe Antirrhineae includes the Snapdragons and Toadflaxes and belongs to the Figwort family. It is the most distinctive tribe of the Scrophulariaceae and is treated in some classifications as an independent family. This volume is the first worldwide treatment of this plant group for almost 150 years. It draws on a database of about 4,000 plant names and more than 1,300 publications on the taxonomy of the Antirrhineae. The descriptions cover 27 genera representing 328 species, including 27 new taxa that are detailed here for the first time. Also for the first time, scanning electron microscopy has made it possible to accurately survey the highly variable seed morphology for the group, which provides a rich source of characters for testing existing classifications. In addition, new methods have been devised by the author for describing the complex morphology of the seeds. Major areas of taxonomic controversy discussed in this volume include the generic limitation and supraspecific classification of Linaria. Nearly 900 photomicrographs and line drawings of new species and subspecies illustrate the text.
