Book Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Calonectria and Its Cylindrocladium Anamorphs

Download or read book Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Calonectria and Its Cylindrocladium Anamorphs written by Lorenzo Lombard and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Species in the genus Calonectria (anamorph: Cylindrocladium) are euascomycetes in the order Hypocreales and are important pathogens of a wide range of plant hosts globally. At the outset, this thesis considers the literature pertaining to species of Calonectria and especially the importance of the biological, morphological and phylogenetic species concepts on the taxonomy of this group. It is clear that DNA sequence comparisons have revolutionised the taxonomy of Calonectria and literature also highlights the importance of a polyphasic approach to species identification. Studies in this thesis treat a number of forest nursery disease problems caused by Calonectria spp. and new species are consequently described based on DNA sequence comparisons, morphological characteristics and sexual compatibility tests. As a consequence several cryptic species were also identified in the genus. Therefore, a multigene genealogy was constructed for all Calonectriaspp. for which cultures were available and shown to group together in 13 subclades also supported by morphological similarities. As a consequence all Cylindrocladium spp. were circumscribed to the genus Calonectria, regardless whether the teleomorph state was present or not, based on new nomenclature regulations stated in Article 59.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exciting time to produce an overview of the systematics and evolution of the fungi. Molecular and subcellular characters have given us our first view of the true phylogeny of the fungi. The systematic chapters present detailed illustrated treatments of specific fungal groups with the authors' interpretation of the systematics of that group as well as a survey of specific economic, ecological, morphological, ultrastructural, molecular and cultural data. Other chapters, in addition to treating techniques useful in modern mycology, provide the reader with views of the place of the fungi among the Eukaryotes and relationships within the Mycota. Volume VII, Part A, includes an overview of the fungal hierarchy, Pseudomycota, Chytridiomycota, Zygomycota, Ascomycota and their yeasts, and anamorphic states. Volume VII, Part B, includes the Basidiomycota and their yeasts, and chapters on speciation, molecular evolution, preservation, computer techniques, and nomenclature.

Book The Fusarium Laboratory Manual

Download or read book The Fusarium Laboratory Manual written by John F. Leslie and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in over 20 years, a comprehensive collection of photographs and descriptions of species in the fungal genus Fusarium is available. This laboratory manual provides an overview of the biology of Fusarium and the techniques involved in the isolation, identification and characterization of individual species and the populations in which they occur. It is the first time that genetic, morphological and molecular approaches have been incorporated into a volume devoted to Fusarium identification. The authors include descriptions of species, both new and old, and provide protocols for genetic, morphological and molecular identification techniques. The Fusarium Laboratory Manual also includes some of the evolutionary biology and population genetics thinking that has begun to inform the understanding of agriculturally important fungal pathogens. In addition to practical “how-to” protocols it also provides guidance in formulating questions and obtaining answers about this very important group of fungi. The need for as many different techniques as possible to be used in the identification and characterization process has never been greater. These approaches have applications to fungi other than those in the genus Fusarium. This volume presents an introduction to the genus Fusarium, the toxins these fungi produce and the diseases they can cause. "The Fusarium Laboratory Manual is a milestone in the study of the genus Fusarium and will help bridge the gap between morphological and phylogenetic taxonomy. It will be used by everybody dealing with Fusarium in the Third Millenium." --W.F.O. Marasas, Medical Research Council, South Africa

Book Introduction to Plant Diseases

Download or read book Introduction to Plant Diseases written by George B. Lucas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year we see a remarkable increase in scientific knowledge. We are learning more each day about the world around us, about the numerous biological organisms of the biosphere, about the physical and chemical processes that shaped and continue to change our planet. The cataloging, retrieval, dissemination, and use of this new information along with the continued development of new computer technology provide some of the most challenging problems in science as we enter the Information Age. With the explosion of knowledge in science, it is especially important that students in introductory courses learn not only the basic material of a subject, but also about the newest developments in that subject. With this goal in mind, we have prepared a second edition of Introduction to Plant Diseases: Identification and Management. We prepared this edition with the same general purpose that we had for the first edition - to provide practical, up-to-date information that helps in the successful management of diseases on food, fiber, and landscape plants for students who do not have a strong background in the biological sciences. We included new information on (1) the precise identification of diseases and the pathogens that cause them, (2) the development of epidemics of plant diseases, (3) the application of biotechnology in plant pathology, (4) the use of alternative methods of crop production and disease management that help protect the environment, and (5) diseases that have become more important since the first edition was published.
