Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematics and Biology of the Deep-Sea Fish Family Gibberichthyidae, a Senior Synonym of the Family Kasidoroidae In 1973 Dr. John Paxton made available to us an adult specimen in excellent condition which was collected from the south-central Pacific, and, as noticed by Dr. Paxton, his specimen seemed to differ noticeably from Atlantic adults in having smaller scales, among other features. In 1975 Dr. Bruce Robison made available to us an adult col lected in the Halmahera Sea during the WV alpha Hsux Expedition; he sub sequently provided a second specimen from the same source. Recently Paxton informed us of an adult specimen in good condition collected by the r/v galath EA off Madagascar which he located in the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen. At last it was possible to compare an adult in good condi tion from the western Indian Ocean (type locality of Iatrjfrons was off Zanzibar) with adults from the Pacific and with G. Pumilus in the Atlantic and to evaluate the status of [mi rons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico Vol 1

Download or read book Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico Vol 1 written by John McEachran and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 1079 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world and contains over 15 percent of all known species of marine fishes. This diverse fish fauna has been the subject of many publications, but, until now, no work has ever surveyed all known species, including the deep sea fishes and those of the southern Gulf. This book is the first of two volumes that will cover the entire fish fauna of the Gulf of Mexico. An introductory section that outlines the Gulf's geographical setting, geological origin, current patterns, tides, sediments, meteorology, ecology, and biological exploration is followed by a key for the forty-four orders of fishes known from the Gulf. Keys and descriptions are provided for families, which are arranged phylogenetically, and for the species, which are arranged alphabetically, described, and distinguished from similar species. All but a few species are illustrated.

Download or read book Early Stages of Atlantic Fishes written by William J. Richards and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 1312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early Life History (ELH) of marine fishes in Fishing Area 31, which includes the western central North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, has remained incomplete over the years. This certainly wasn't because of any lack of interest, but rather a lack of a comprehensive merging of studies that would provide a broad understandi

Book The Physiology of Developing Fish Viviparity and Posthatching Juveniles

Download or read book The Physiology of Developing Fish Viviparity and Posthatching Juveniles written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1988-04-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE: Dramatic changes occur in the physiology of most animals during their development. Among the vertebrates, birds are entirely oviparous, live for variable periods in a cleidoic egg, and show fundamental alterations in excretion, nutrition, and respiration at the time of hatching. In contrast, the eutherian mammals are all viviparous, depend on the maternal circulation and a specialized placenta to provide food, exchange gases, and discharge wastes. The physiology of both mother and fetus is highly specialized during gestation and changes fundamentally at the time of birth. Fishes exemplify both the oviparous and the viviparous modes of development, with some examples that are intermediate between the two. In these two volumes, selected reviews of many, but not all, aspects of development are presented. The chapters in Part A relate to the physiology of eggs and larvae; those in Part B concern viviparity and the physiology of posthatching juvenile fishes.

Book Gulf of Mexico Origin Waters and Biota

Download or read book Gulf of Mexico Origin Waters and Biota written by Darryl L. Felder and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 1405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark scientific reference for scientists, researchers, and students of marine biology tackles the monumental task of taking a complete biodiversity inventory of the Gulf of Mexico with full biotic and biogeographic information. Presenting a comprehensive summary of knowledge of Gulf biota through 2004, the book includes seventy-seven chapters, which list more than fifteen thousand species in thirty-eight phyla or divisions and were written by 138 authors from seventy-one institutions in fourteen countries. This first volume of Gulf of Mexico Origin, Waters, and Biota, a multivolumed set edited by John W. Tunnell Jr., Darryl L. Felder, and Sylvia A. Earle, provides information on each species' habitat, biology, and geographic range, along with full references and a narrative introduction to the group, which opens each chapter.

Book The Living Marine Resources of the Western Central Pacific

Download or read book The Living Marine Resources of the Western Central Pacific written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Fao. This book was released on 1998 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume field guide covers the species of interest to fisheries of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Western Central Pacific. The area of coverage includes FAO Fishing Area 71 and the southwestern portion of Fishing Area 77 corresponding to the South Pacific Commission mandate area. The marine resource groups included are seaweeds, corals, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, stomatopods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, holothurians, sharks, batoid fishes, chimaeras, bony fishes, estuarine crocodiles, sea turtles, sea snakes and marine mammals. The introductory chapter outlines the environmental, ecological and biogeographical factors influencing the marine biota as well as the basic components of the fisheries in the Western Central Pacific. Within the field guide, the sections on the resource groups are arranged phylogenetically according to higher taxonomic levels such as class, order and family. Each resource group is introduced by general remarks on the group, an illustrated section on technical terms and measurements and a key or guide to orders or families. Each family generally has an account summarizing family diagnostic characters, biological and fisheries information, notes on similar families occurring in the area, a key to species, a checklist of species and a short list of relevant literature. Families that are less important to fisheries include an abbreviated family account and no detailed species information. Species in the important families are treated in detail (arranged alphabetically by genus and species) and include the species name, frequent synonyms and names of similar species, an illustration, FAO common name(s), diagnostic characters, biology and fisheries information, notes on geographical distribution and a distribution map. For less important species, abbreviated accounts are used. Generally, this includes the species name, FAO common name(s), an illustration, a distribution map and notes on biology, fisheries and distribution. Each volume concludes with its own index of scientific and common names.
