Book Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution

Download or read book Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution written by Lawrence J. Fogel and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1999 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, one-stop reference to the history, technology, and application of evolutionary programming Evolutionary programming has come a long way since Lawrence Fogel first proposed in 1961 that intelligence could be modeled on the natural process of evolution. Efforts to apply this innovative approach to artificial intelligence have also evolved over the years, and the advent of fast desktop computers capable of solving complex computational problems has spawned an explosion of interest in the field. Offering the unique perspective of one of the inventors of evolutionary programming, this remarkable work traces forty years of developments in the field. Dr. Fogel consolidates a wealth of information and hard-to-find figures from across the literature, providing comprehensive coverage of the evolutionary programming approach to simulated evolution. This includes both an updated, condensed version of his bestselling 1966 work, Artificial Intelligence Through Simulated Evolution (with Owens and Walsh), and a thorough discussion of the history, technology, and methods of machine learning from 1970 to the present. This important resource features clear, up-to-date explanations of how the simulation of evolutionary processes allows machines to learn to solve new problems in new ways. And it helps readers make the leap to generating intelligent systems-extending the discussion to neural networks, fuzzy logic, and genetic algorithms development. Engineers and computer scientists in all areas of machine learning will gain invaluable insight into existing and emerging applications and obtain ample ideas to draw upon in future research.

Book Integrated Design by Optimization of Electrical Energy Systems

Download or read book Integrated Design by Optimization of Electrical Energy Systems written by Xavier Roboam and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes systemic design methodologies applied to electrical energy systems, in particular integrated optimal design with modeling and optimization methods and tools. It is made up of six chapters dedicated to integrated optimal design. First, the signal processing of mission profiles and system environment variables are discussed. Then, optimization-oriented analytical models, methods and tools (design frameworks) are proposed. A “multi-level optimization” smartly coupling several optimization processes is the subject of one chapter. Finally, a technico-economic optimization especially dedicated to electrical grids completes the book. The aim of this book is to summarize design methodologies based in particular on a systemic viewpoint, by considering the system as a whole. These methods and tools are proposed by the most important French research laboratories, which have many scientific partnerships with other European and international research institutions. Scientists and engineers in the field of electrical engineering, especially teachers/researchers because of the focus on methodological issues, will find this book extremely useful, as will PhD and Masters students in this field.

Book Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing

Download or read book Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing written by Mike Nachtegael and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ongoing increase in scale of integration of electronics makes storage and computational power affordable to many applications. Also image process ing systems can benefit from this trend. A variety of algorithms for image processing tasks becomes close at hand. From the whole range of possible approaches, those based on fuzzy logic are the ones this book focusses on. A particular useful property of fuzzy logic techniques is their ability to represent knowledge in a way which is comprehensible to human interpretation. The theory of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic was initiated in 1965 by Zadeh, and is one of the most developed models to treat imprecision and uncertainty. Instead of the classical approach that an object belongs or does not belong to a set, the concept of a fuzzy set allows a gradual transition from mem bership to nonmembership, providing partial degrees of membership. Fuzzy techniques are often complementary to existing techniques and can contribute to the development of better and more robust methods, as has already been illustrated in numerous scientific branches. The present book resulted from the workshop "Fuzzy Filters for Image Processing" which was organized at the 10th FUZZ-IEEE Conference in Mel bourne, Australia. At this event several speakers have given an overview of the current state-of-the-art of fuzzy filters for image processing. Afterwards, the book has been completed with contributions of other international re searchers.

Book Evolutionary Image Analysis and Signal Processing

Download or read book Evolutionary Image Analysis and Signal Processing written by Stefano Cagnoni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this book on evolutionaryImage Analysis and Signal P- cessing (IASP) has two main goals. The ?rst, occasional one is to celebrate the 10th edition of EvoIASP, the workshop which has been the only event speci?cally dedicated to this topic since 1999. The second, more important one is to give an overview of the opportunities o?ered by Evolutionary C- putation (EC) techniques to computer vision, pattern recognition, and image and signal processing. It is not possible to celebrate EvoIASP properly without ?rst ackno- edging EvoNET, the EU-funded network of excellence, which has made it possible for Europe to build a strong European research community on EC. Thanks to the success of the ?rst, pioneering event organized by EvoNET, held in 1998 in Paris, it was possible to realize that not only was EC a f- tile ground for basic research but also there were several application ?elds to which EC techniques could o?er a valuable contribution. That was how the ideaofcreatingasingleevent,EvoWorkshops, outofacollectionofworkshops dedicated to applications of EC, was born. Amongst the possible application ?elds for EC, IASP was selected almost accidentally, due to the occasional presence, within EvoNET, of less than a handful of researchers who were interested in it. I would lie if I stated that the event was a great success since its very start, but it was successful enough to survive healthily for a couple of years, before reaching its present size, relevance, and popularity.

Book Intelligent Control

Download or read book Intelligent Control written by Nazmul Siddique and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent Control considers non-traditional modelling and control approaches to nonlinear systems. Fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolutionary computing techniques are the main tools used. The book presents a modular switching fuzzy logic controller where a PD-type fuzzy controller is executed first followed by a PI-type fuzzy controller thus improving the performance of the controller compared with a PID-type fuzzy controller. The advantage of the switching-type fuzzy controller is that it uses one rule-base thus minimises the rule-base during execution. A single rule-base is developed by merging the membership functions for change of error of the PD-type controller and sum of error of the PI-type controller. Membership functions are then optimized using evolutionary algorithms. Since the two fuzzy controllers were executed in series, necessary further tuning of the differential and integral scaling factors of the controller is then performed. Neural-network-based tuning for the scaling parameters of the fuzzy controller is then described and finally an evolutionary algorithm is applied to the neurally-tuned-fuzzy controller in which the sigmoidal function shape of the neural network is determined. The important issue of stability is addressed and the text demonstrates empirically that the developed controller was stable within the operating range. The text concludes with ideas for future research to show the reader the potential for further study in this area. Intelligent Control will be of interest to researchers from engineering and computer science backgrounds working in the intelligent and adaptive control.

Book Evolutionary Optimization

Download or read book Evolutionary Optimization written by Ruhul Sarker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary computation techniques have attracted increasing att- tions in recent years for solving complex optimization problems. They are more robust than traditional methods based on formal logics or mathematical programming for many real world OR/MS problems. E- lutionary computation techniques can deal with complex optimization problems better than traditional optimization techniques. However, most papers on the application of evolutionary computation techniques to Operations Research /Management Science (OR/MS) problems have scattered around in different journals and conference proceedings. They also tend to focus on a very special and narrow topic. It is the right time that an archival book series publishes a special volume which - cludes critical reviews of the state-of-art of those evolutionary com- tation techniques which have been found particularly useful for OR/MS problems, and a collection of papers which represent the latest devel- ment in tackling various OR/MS problems by evolutionary computation techniques. This special volume of the book series on Evolutionary - timization aims at filling in this gap in the current literature. The special volume consists of invited papers written by leading - searchers in the field. All papers were peer reviewed by at least two recognised reviewers. The book covers the foundation as well as the practical side of evolutionary optimization.
