Simultaneously, a range of strategies have been established for the conformational stabilization of bioactive peptides, as well as for the de novo design of peptides with defined secondary structures. These methods are either based on the chemical modification of the peptide backbone, such as cyclization and stapled peptides, or on the use of a range of non-proteinogenic amino acids that, in a defined sequential arrangement, induce secondary structures peptides. Such building blocks include D- and other non-proteinogenic amino acids, as well as beta- and gamma-amino acids. This Research Topic comprises a collection of papers by an international group of 77 scientists with a background in synthetic, analytical, computational and medicinal chemistry, as well as in biochemistry and pharmacology. Their research is presented here in a total of 11 papers (8 original research reports and 3 reviews), covering diverse aspects of folded synthetic peptides. Our goal for CPS-98 was to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge, cooperation and friendship between the international and Chinese scientific communities, and we believe this goal was met. The symposium consisted of 8 sessions with 42 oral and 90 poster presentations, including synthetic methods, molecular diversity and peptide libraries, structure and conformation of peptides and proteins, bioactive peptides, peptide immunology, De Novo design and synthesis of proteins and peptides, ligand-receptor interactions, the chemistry-biology-interface and challenging problems in peptides. The enthusiastic cooperation and excellent contributions were gratifying and the active response of the invited speakers contributed to the success of the symposium. The presentations were of excellent caliber and represented the most current and significant aspects of peptide science. Dr. Kit Lam of the University of Arizona and Dr. Yun-Hua Ye of Peking University were the recipients of “The Cathay Award” sponsored by the H. H. Liu Education Foundation, offered for their seminal contribution in peptide science and the Chinese Peptide Symposium. Four outstanding young scientists were selected by the organizing committee to receive awards sponsored by Haikou Nanhai Pharmaceutical Industry Co. Ltd. (Zhong He Group).

As a Professor of Chemistry and, until his retirement in 1992, the Head of the Department of Studies in Chemistry at Bangalore University, India, he not only devoted much of his time to his students, teaching basic organic chemistry, but was also able to contribute to the field of peptide chemistry. After completing 25 years of service at Central College, Bangalore, where he was admired as an outstanding teacher, Professor Sivanandaiah is still active in research. He is now Professor Emeritus and continues to contribute to the field of peptides. As former students of Professor Sivanandaiah, we felt that publishing a book containing articles related to the design, synthesis, conformation, and biological activity of peptides and written by eminent scientists in the field of peptide research would be a fitting tribute to his role in the field of bioorganic chemistry.
