Book Synthesis of Highly Functionalized Polymers

Download or read book Synthesis of Highly Functionalized Polymers written by RI Chen and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highly functionalized polymers represent a broad family of polymers with multiple functionalities attached to each repeat unit in the backbone. These can be small molecule functional groups or polymer sidechains grown or grafted from these functional groups. The latter leads to a class of polymers defined as comb polymers. This type of structure enforces a highly stretched conformation of the polymer backbone and imparts unique properties due to low inter chain entanglement and low entropic penalty for self-assembly. The comb polymers have a diverse set of architectures and compositions with potential applications in surface modification, resin formulation and nanopatterning. To realize this potential, efficient, versatile and easy-to-handle synthetic methods need to be constantly evolved. This dissertation focuses on the synthesis of comb polymers based on a new monomer and the application of multi-component reactions to reduce synthetic complexity. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the design of a benign formamide monomer capable of undergoing isocyanide-based multi-component reaction. The synthesis, polymerizability, reactivity and stability of this monomer is studied, along with its utility in the synthesis of comb polymers. Specifically, a difunctional polymerizable initiator (Y-inimer) that can be used for two tandem controlled polymerizations is designed from the formamide monomer. The utility of this Y-inimer is demonstrated through the synthesis of a comb polymer with 1:1 ratio of A and B chains, and A/B mixed polymer brushes from a substrate where intimate contact between the A and B chains is beneficial for exploring polyelectrolyte behavior. Finally, a comb polymer-based block copolymer additive is explored for synergistically improving the toughness and strength of a 3D printable epoxy resin. The main contribution of this dissertation lies in the 1) design of benign monomer that can be used in isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions to design highly functional polymers, without having to directly handle the isocyanide, 2) development of a dualfunctional polymerizable initiator for the synthesis of comb polymers with exact 1:1 ratio of A and B sidechains, and 3) development of a comb polymer additive for toughening of epoxy resin without loss of modulus or rheological properties.

Book Non equilibrium Phenomena in Confined Soft Matter

Download or read book Non equilibrium Phenomena in Confined Soft Matter written by Simone Napolitano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with those properties of non-equilibrium soft matter that deviate greatly from the bulk properties as a result of nanoscale confinement. The ultimate physical origin of these confinement effects is not yet fully understood. At the state of the art, the discussion on confinement effects focuses on equilibrium properties, finite size effects and interfacial interactions. However this is a limited vision which does not fully capture the peculiar behaviour of soft matter under confinement and some exotic phenomena that are displayed. This volume will be organized in the following three main themes. Equilibration and physical aging: treating non-equilibrium via the formal methodology of statistical physics in bulk, we analyse physical origin of the non-equilibrium character of thin polymer. We then focus on the impact of nanoconfinement on the equilibration of glasses of soft matter (a process of tremendous technological interest, commonly known as physical aging), comparing the latest trends of polymers in experiments, simulations with those of low-molecular weight glass formers. Irreversible adsorption: the formation of stable adsorbed layers occurs at timescales much larger than the time necessary to equilibrate soft matter in bulk. Recent experimental evidence show a strong correlation between the behaviour of polymers under confinement and the presence of a layer irreversibly adsorbed onto the substrate. This correlation hints at the possibility to tailor the properties of ultrathin films by controlling the adsorption kinetics. The book reports physical aspects of irreversible chain adsorption, such as the dynamics, structure, morphology, and crystallization of adsorbed layers. Glass transition and material properties: this section of the book focuses on the spread of absolute values in materials properties of confined systems, when measured by different experimental and computation techniques and a new method to quantify the effects of confinement in thin films and nanocomposites independently on the investigation procedure will be presented.

Book Self Healing Polymers

Download or read book Self Healing Polymers written by Wolfgang H. Binder and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-healing is a well-known phenomenon in nature: a broken bone merges after some time and if skin is damaged, the wound will stop bleeding and heals again. This concept can be mimicked in order to create polymeric materials with the ability to regenerate after they have suffered degradation or wear. Already realized applications are used in aerospace engineering, and current research in this fascinating field shows how different self-healing mechanisms proven successful by nature can be adapted to produce even more versatile materials. The book combines the knowledge of an international panel of experts in the field and provides the reader with chemical and physical concepts for self-healing polymers, including aspects of biomimetic processes of healing in nature. It shows how to design self-healing polymers and explains the dynamics in these systems. Different self-healing concepts such as encapsulated systems and supramolecular systems are detailed. Chapters on analysis and friction detection in self-healing polymers and on applications round off the book.

Book Nanoporous Materials Science And Engineering

Download or read book Nanoporous Materials Science And Engineering written by G Q Max Lu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-11-22 with total page 911 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porous materials are of scientific and technological importance because of the presence of voids of controllable dimensions at the atomic, molecular, and nanometer scales, enabling them to discriminate and interact with molecules and clusters. Interestingly the big deal about this class of materials is about the “nothingness” within — the pore space. International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) classifies porous materials into three categories — micropores of less than 2 nm in diameter, mesopores between 2 and 50 nm, and macropores of greater than 50 nm. In this book, nanoporous materials are defined as those porous materials with pore diameters less than 100 nm.Over the last decade, there has been an ever increasing interest and research effort in the synthesis, characterization, functionalization, molecular modeling and design of nanoporous materials. The main challenges in research include the fundamental understanding of structure-property relations and tailor-design of nanostructures for specific properties and applications. Research efforts in this field have been driven by the rapid growing emerging applications such as biosensor, drug delivery, gas separation, energy storage and fuel cell technology, nanocatalysis and photonics. These applications offer exciting new opportunities for scientists to develop new strategies and techniques for the synthesis and applications of these materials. This book provides a series of systematic reviews of the recent developments in nanoporous materials. It covers the following topics: (1) synthesis, processing, characterization and property evaluation; (2) functionalization by physical and/or chemical treatments; (3) experimental and computational studies on fundamental properties, such as catalytic effects, transport and adsorption, molecular sieving and biosorption; (4) applications, including photonic devices, catalysis, environmental pollution control, biological molecules separation and isolation, sensors, membranes, hydrogen and energy storage, etc./a
