This interest in designing digital computing systems without a global clock is prompted by the ever growing difficulty in adopting global synchronization as the only efficient means to system timing. Asynchronous circuits and systems have long held interest for circuit designers and researchers alike because of the inherent challenge involved in designing these circuits, as well as developing design techniques for them. The frontier research in this area can be traced back to Huffman's publications `The Synthesis of Sequential Switching Circuits' in 1954 followed by Unger's book, `Asynchronous Sequential Switching Circuits' in 1969 where a theoretical foundation for handling logic hazards was established. In the last few years a growing number of researchers have joined force in unveiling the mystery of designing correct asynchronous circuits, and better yet, have produced several alternatives in automatic synthesis and verification of such circuits. This collection of research papers represents a balanced view of current research efforts in the design, synthesis and verification of asynchronous systems.

The lack of interest in asynchronous techniques was motivated by the progressive shift towards synchronous design techniques that had much more structure and were much easier to verify and synthesize. System design requirements made it impossible to eliminate totally the use of asynchronous circuits. Given the objective difficulty encountered by designers, the asynchronous components of electronic systems such as interfaces became a serious bottleneck in the design process. The use of new models and some theoretical breakthroughs made it possible to develop asynchronous design techniques that were reliable and effective. This book describes a variety of mathematical models and of algorithms that form the backbone and the body of a new design methodology for asyn chronous design. The book is intended for asynchronous hardware designers, for computer-aided tool experts, and for digital designers interested in ex ploring the possibility of designing asynchronous circuits. It requires a solid mathematical background in discrete event systems and algorithms. While the book has not been written as a textbook, nevertheless it could be used as a reference book in an advanced course in logic synthesis or asynchronous design.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a CAD system for the automatic synthesis and verification of gate-level timed circuits. Timed circuits are a class of asynchronous circuits which incorporate explicit timing information in the specification which is used throughout the synthesis procedure to optimize the design. This system accepts a textual specification capable of specifying general circuit behavior and timing requirements. This specification is systematically transformed to a graphical representation that can be analyzed using an exact and efficient timing analysis algorithm to find the reachable state space. From this state space, our synthesis procedure derives a timed circuit that is hazard-free using only basic gates to facilitate the mapping to semi-custom components, such as standard-cells and gate-arrays. The resulting gate-level timed circuit implementations are up to 40 percent smaller and 50 percent faster than those produced using other asynchronous design methodologies. We also demonstrate that our timed designs can be smaller and faster than their synchronous counterparts. To address verification, we have applied our timing analysis algorithm to verify efficiently not only our synthesized circuits but also a wide collection of reasonable-sized, highly concurrent timed circuits that could not previously be verified using traditional techniques.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The majority of integrated circuits today are synchronous: every part of the chip times its operation with reference to a single global clock. As circuits become larger and faster, it becomes progressively more difficult to coordinate all actions of the chip to the clock. Asynchronous circuits do not suffer from this problem, because they do not require global synchronization; they also offer other benefits, such as modularity, lower power and automatic adaptation to physical conditions. The main disadvantage of asynchronous circuits is that techniques for their design are less well understood than for synchronous circuits, and there are few tools to help with the design process. This dissertation proposes an approach to the design of asynchronous modules, and a new synthesis tool which combines a number of novel ideas with existing methods for finite state machine synthesis. Connections between modules are assumed to have unbounded finite delays on all wires, but fundamental mode is used inside modules, rather than the pessimistic speed-independent or quasi-delay-insensitive models. Accurate technology-specific verification is performed to check that circuits work correctly. Circuits are described using a language based upon the Signal Transition Graph, which is a well-known method for specifying asynchronous circuits. Concurrency reduction techniques are used to produce a large number of circuits that conform to a given specification. Circuits are verified using a bi-bounded simulation algorithm, and then performance estimations are obtained by a gate-level simulator utilising a new estimation of waveform slopes. Circuits can be ranked in terms of high speed, low power dissipation or small size, and then the best circuit for a particular task chosen. Results are presented that show significant improvements over most circuits produced by other synthesis tools. Some circuits are twice as fast and dissipate half the power of equivalent speed-independent circuits. Examples of the specification language are provided which show that it is easier to use than current specification approaches. The price that must be paid for the improved performance is decreased reliability, technology dependence of the circuits produced, and increased runtime compared to other tools."

The collection of papers in this book represents some of the discussions and presentations at a workshop on hardware verification held in Calgary, January 12-16 1987. The thrust of the workshop was to give the floor to a few leading researchers involved in the use of formal approaches to VLSI design, and provide them ample time to develop not only their latest ideas but also the evolution of these ideas. In contrast to simulation, where the objective is to assist in detecting errors in system behavior in the case of some selected inputs, the intent of hardware verification is to formally prove that a chip design meets a specification of its intended behavior (for all acceptable inputs). There are several important applications where formal verification of designs may be argued to be cost-effective. Examples include hardware components used in "safety critical" applications such as flight control, industrial plants, and medical life-support systems (such as pacemakers). The problems are of such magnitude in certain defense applications that the UK Ministry of Defense feels it cannot rely on commercial chips and has embarked on a program of producing formally verified chips to its own specification. Hospital, civil aviation, and transport boards in the UK will also use these chips. A second application domain for verification is afforded by industry where specific chips may be used in high volume or be remotely placed.

Book excerpt: This work introduces an approach to automatically synthesize Simulink diagrams into asynchronous circuits. It is based on the CodeSimulink co-design environment, a tool developed at Politecnico di Torino able to convert Simulink diagrams into synchronous implementations. Such environment has been extended in two different ways in order to integrate it with conventional FPGA and ASIC flows. The system generated with FPGAs as target is based on bundled-data implementation, which needs special care during both synthesis and placement in order to maintain circuit correctness. Simulink diagrams are compiled into standard VHDL and synthesized with conventional tools provided by chip manufacturers. The obtained code is constrained to avoid unwanted synthesis optimizations and constrained to implement the "equipotential region" necessary to synthesize correct self-timed designs. The ASIC implementation uses the Timeless Design Environment by Handshake Solutions, a commercial tool chain able to synthesize Haste specifications into asynchronous logic. Experimental test showed good results generating smaller circuits even than hand-written code.
