Book Thin Film Electronics with Novel Materials

Download or read book Thin Film Electronics with Novel Materials written by Yiyang Gong and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel materials, including zinc oxide (ZnO) and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), have been investigated in this dissertation for the realization of high-performance large-area integrated circuits. These novel materials may provide differential advantages over the established large-area thin film technology based on silicon, which has been extensively employed in applications such as large-area flat panel displays, high-speed active matrix thin film circuits, flexible and wearable electronics, etc. The dissertation begins with the discussion of high-performance plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) of ZnO thin films and ZnO thin film transistors (TFTs) with a field effect mobility of ~ 10 to 20 cm2/Vs, which have been demonstrated. Offset-drain ZnO TFTs, which are able to withstand or switch voltage beyond 80 V, have also been demonstrated. These results shed light on the realization of large-area active-matrix circuits beyond the capabilities of the current display industry where high circuit speed or high operation voltage is required. To further improve the performance of ZnO-based electronics, many related materials, including doped ZnO, zinc nitride, and aluminum nitride, have been investigated. Doped ZnO has been proposed as the carrier injection layer that can improve the conductivity of metal-semiconductor contact in ZnO TFTs. Aluminum-doped ZnO thin films have been deposited using triisobutyl aluminum (TIBA) as the dopant precursor instead of trimethyl aluminum (TMA) in order to improve the uniformity of dopant distribution because TIBA has much lower vapor pressure than TMA. AZO thin films with resistivity ~ 10-2 cm have been achieved by PEALD. Besides, aluminum nitride and zinc nitride thin films have also been studied using PEALD. In addition to the showerhead PEALD system, a novel inductively coupled plasma ALD system has been designed and set up that provides RF power up to 500 W in order to generate a highly reactive nitrogen plasma source and enable the deposition of high-quality metal nitride at relatively low temperature. These metal nitride thin films may provide additional building blocks to enhance the speed and thermal stability of ZnO-based thin film devices and circuits.Owing to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties, 2D-TMD thin films have been studied for flexible electronics applications. High quality MoS2 and WS2 thin films have been achieved via mechanical exfoliation and chemical vapor deposition. To fabricate MoS2- and WS2-based TFTs, a 5-step device fabrication process has been developed, which is compatible to both the conventional rigid substrate and the ~ 4.8 nm thick solution-cast polyimide (PI) flexible substrate. The MoS2 and WS2 TFTs fabricated on PI substrate exhibit a field effect mobility of between 1 to 20 cm2/Vs, which is similar to that of those fabricated on rigid silicon substrate. More importantly, extraordinary mechanical strength and stability have been demonstrated for MoS2 and WS2 TFTs fabricated on PI substrate. A reasonably small degradation in device performance has been observed in these flexible 2D-TMD TFTs under static bending to the radius of ~ 2mm and after cyclic bending up to 100,000 cycles. Finally, attempts to create integratable 2D-TMD circuits have been demonstrated. To realize large-area 2D-TMD based circuits, growth of wafer-scale continuous WSe2 thin films has been demonstrated using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Deposition has been achieved at as low as 400 C, which allows deposition on glass and polymeric substrate and enables the transfer-free fabrication of WSe2 TFTs and circuits on arbitrary platforms. Patterning and post-growth thickness modulation of continuous WSe2 thin film have been demonstrated using CF4 plasma and O2 plasma, whereby high-speed etching and nanometer-scale film thinning can be realized. With the capability of depositing and patterning wafer-scale WSe2 thin films, an array of p-channel WSe2 TFTs have been fabricated with a field effect mobility of ~0.01 cm2/Vs and an on-off ratio greater than 104.

Book Multifunctional Oxide Based Materials From Synthesis to Application

Download or read book Multifunctional Oxide Based Materials From Synthesis to Application written by Teofil Jesionowski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with novel aspects and perspectives in metal oxide and hybrid material fabrication. The contributions are mainly focused on the search for a new group of advanced materials with designed physicochemical properties, especially an expanded porous structure and defined surface activity. The proposed technological procedures result in an enhanced activity of the synthesized hybrid materials, which is of great importance when considering their potential fields of application. The use of such materials in different technological disciplines, including aspects associated with environmental protection, allows for the verification of the proposed synthesis method. Thus, it can be stated that those aspects are of interdisciplinary character and may be located at the interface of three scientific disciplines—chemistry, materials science, and engineering—as well as environmental protection. Furthermore, the presented scientific scope is in some way an answer to the continuous demand for such types of materials and opens new perspectives for their practical use

Book Novel Synthesis and Fabrication of ZnO Thin Films Via an Anhydrous Sol gel Route

Download or read book Novel Synthesis and Fabrication of ZnO Thin Films Via an Anhydrous Sol gel Route written by Lee Huat Kelly Koh and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the aim to synthesise nano-sized zinc oxide particles in the form of thin films by using a novel anhydrous sol-gel technique was proposed, developed and demonstrated. The sol-gel was prepared using anhydrous zinc acetate [Zn(C2H3O2)2], monoethanolamine [H2NC2H4OH ] and isopropanol. The zinc oxide thin films were fabricated on soda-lime and fused silica substrates from both single- and multi- step spin-coating depositions. A range of widely reported zinc acetate concentrations, annealing temperatures and spin-coating speeds was chosen to characterise and study the various effects that these parameters have on the crystallographical, morphological, optical, electronic and electrical properties. The mean crystallite sizes and other structural properties (such as micro-strain and degree of crystallinity) were estimated using x-ray diffraction analysis. In combination with scanning electron microscopy, the increase in particle size was observed to be non-linear, changing from that of individual growth to that of particle conglomeration at higher precursor concentration and annealing temperature. Strong crystalline orientation along the (002) c-axis crystalline plane (with intensity ratio _ (002) value up to 0.95) was exhibited for films fabricated from low precursor concentrations, multi-layered and furnace pre-heated films. Optical transmittance and electronic bandgap was measured and calculated using UV-visible spectroscopy. Thin films with high transparency (> 98 % (T) after substrate subtraction) were achieved for films prepared from low precursor concentrations, while absorption wavelength and optical bandgap energy were consistent and in good agreement with recognised values of zinc oxide. Reproducibility and reliability tests carried out on the films show high morphological consistency and stability against temperature fluctuation, moisture and electrochemical effects. Surface morphologically, the films were dense. The electrical resistivity of the (single- and multi- layer) films, before and after forming gas treatment was also measured. The minimum resistivity value of all the single-layer films was calculated to be 9.58 x 102 _cm, and the electrical resistivity showed an overall mprovement (up to one order of magnitude). On contrary, the multi-layered films, which are more resistive, worsened in resistivity after forming gas treatment.

Book High Performance Polymers Their Origin and Development

Download or read book High Performance Polymers Their Origin and Development written by Gerald S. Kirshenbaum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe's (1740-1832) Mineralogy and Geology, "The history of science is science." A sesquicentennial later, one may state that the history of high performance polymers is the science of these important engineering polymers. Many of the inventors of these superior materials of construction have stood on the thresholds of the new and have recounted their experiences (trials, tribulations and satisfactions) in the symposium and in their chapters in this book. Those who have not accepted the historical approach in the past, should now recognize the value of the historical viewpoint for studying new developments, such as general purpose polymers and, to a greater degree, the high performance polymers. To put polymer science into its proper perspective, its worth recalling that historically, the ages of civilization have been named according to the materials that dominated that period. First there was the Stone Age eventually followed by the Tin, Bronze, Iron and Steel Ages. Today many historians consider us living in the Age of Synthetics: Polymers, Fibers, Plastics, Elastomers, Films, Coatings, Adhesives, etc. It is also interesting to note that in the early 1980's, Lord Todd, then President of the Royal Society of Chemistry was asked what has been chemistry's biggest contribution to society. He felt that despite all the marvelous medical advances, chemistry's biggest contribution was the development of polymeri zation. Man's knowledge of polymer science is so new that Professor Herman F.
