Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES OF AMPHIPHILIC PLATINUM(II) COMPLEXES WITH TRIDENTATE N-DONOR LIGANDS - FROM SIMPLE MOLECULES TO SUPRAMOLECULAR ASSEMBLIES AND NANOSTRUCTURES Submitted by PO Charlotte for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2014 Several series of amphiphilic platinum(II) complexes with tridentate N-donor ligands were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties as well as the spectroscopic changes resulting from the supramolecular assemblies of the complexes were studied. Water-soluble platinum(II) bzimpy complexes have been shown to exhibit strong aggregation in water to give highly ordered nanostructures and by structural modification, various morphologies such as spherical and cylindrical micelles, vesicles and bilayer sheets were obtained. The differences in molecular packing and morphology have been found to give rise to an alteration of Pt---Pt interaction and hence a change in MMLCT absorption and MMLCT emission and such changes were utilized as a probe for the morphological transformation. - + Different hydrophilic groups of sulfonate (-SO ), trimethylammonium (-NMe ) and 3 3 triethylene glycol (TEG) were incorporated into the platinum(II) bzimpy complexes to render their water solubility. An interesting aggregation-partial deaggregation-aggregation process has been demonstrated by [Pt{bzimpy(PrSO ) }Cl]K and its alkynyl analogues via a change in the solvent 3 2 composition. A drastic rainbow-like color change from red to yellow to green and blue was observed via the increase in organic solvent content in the aqueous solution of [Pt{bzimpy(PrSO )}Cl]K. The color change and luminescence change were 3 2 monitored by UV-vis absorption and emission studies, and a change in the MMLCT absorption and emission due to the alteration in Pt---Pt interactions during the assembly and disassembly process was observed. Through microscopy studies, the spectroscopic changes were correlated to a morphological transformation from vesicle to rod. The degree of aggregation of the complexes with different hydrophilic groups was compared through their dimerization constant and the inferences of electrostatic interactions on assemblies were investigated through the modulation of salt content of the solution and via co-assembly studies of the highly charged complexes, [Pt{bzimpy(PrSO ) (OPrSO )}Cl]K and [Pt{bzimpy(C H -NMe ) }Cl]Cl . 3 2 3 2 10 20 3 2 3 Through the incorporation of hydrophilic alkynyl ligands, bolaamphiphilic complexes were also synthesized and their aggregation behavior in water was studied. The effect in tuning the hydrophobicity of the complexes was studied by varying the alkyl chain length of the sulfonate-pendant platinum(II) bzimpy (Pt{bzimpy(PrSO ) }) 3 2 complexes and an unexpected shift in the UV-vis absorption and emission was observed due to the formation of aggregates. The thermo-responsive behavior of a TEG-pendant alkynylplatinum(II) bzimpy complex, [Pt{bzimpy(TEG) }{C≡CC H - 2 6 3 (OC H )-3,5}]Cl, in aqueous solution was investigated and on increasing 12 25 2 temperature, a morphological transformation from bilayer sheet to spherical micelles was observed and a large hysteresis

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 34 (thesis year 1989) a total of 13,377 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 184 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 34 reports theses submitted in 1989, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synthesis and Investigation of Pyrazole containing Platinum Complexes for the Design of Macrocyclic Molecules and Potential Two electron Reagents

Download or read book Synthesis and Investigation of Pyrazole containing Platinum Complexes for the Design of Macrocyclic Molecules and Potential Two electron Reagents written by Stuart Alan Willison and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study involving platinum(II) compounds with bis-2,6-pyrazolyl-phenyl type ligands have been undertaken in an effort to design a new architecture for building macrocyclic molecules with potentially coordinating tridentate ligands. Initial reports focused on platinum complexes with 2,6-bis-pyrazolyl-pyridine ligands. One complex, Pt(bpp)Ph +, exhibited an intense pink emission of the solid at 77 K, which is one of the first examples of a luminescent platinum compound with a bis-pyrazolyl-pyridine ligand. Herein we report the investigation of steric influence to promote C-H activation on the formation of monomeric and macrocyclic platinum(II) complexes, using methyl substituents on a series of anionic bis-pyrazolyl-phenyl ligands. Further studies of concentrated reaction mixtures at long reaction times result in exclusively trimeric products, whereas more dilute mixtures and shorter reaction times give only monomer products. Thus, careful control of the reaction conditions allows for selective activation of C-H bonds on the ligand giving isolated products of expected monomers and trimers, as well as surprising new dimeric products. In the course of our investigations of the monomeric platinum(II) products, we have discovered that four complexes react with dithiocarbamate accelerators most commonly used in latex processing, giving a colored response. Thus, the platinum complexes can be used as colorimetric indicators to detect allergenic dithiocarbamate compounds in latex products. In addition, we describe the synthesis and preliminary characterization of a potential two-electron reagent using a monomeric complex, Pt(4)Cl, and pip 2NNN, where 4 is 1,3-bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)benzene and (pip 2NNN) is 2,6-bis(piperidylmethyl)pyridine, to give Pt(4)(pip 2NNN) +.

Book Platinum II Complexes as Spectroscopic Probes for Biomolecules

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of platinum(II) complexes as tags and probes for biomolecules is indeed advantageous for their reactivities can be selective for certain purposes through an interplay of mild reaction conditions and of the ligands bound to the platinum. The use of 195Pt NMR as a method of detecting platinum and its interactions with biomolecules was carried out with the simplest model of platinum(II) tagging to proteins. Variable-temperature 195Pt NMR spectroscopy proved useful in studying the stereodynamics of complex thioethers like methionine. The complex, Pt(trpy)Cl, with its chromophore has a greater potential for probing proteins. It is a noninvasive and selective tag for histidine and cysteine residues on the surface of cytochrome c at pH 5. The protein derivatives obtained are separable, and the tags are easily quantitated and differentiated through the metal-to-ligand charge transfer bands which are sensitive to the environment of the tag. Increasing the pH to 7.0 led to the modification by Pt(trpy)Clof Arg 91 in cytochrome c. Further studies with guanidine-containing ligands as models for arginine modification by Pt(trpy)Cl+ showed that guanidine can act as a terminal ligand and as a bridging ligand. Owing to the potential utility of Pt(trpy)L{sup n+} as electron dense probes of nucleic acid structure, interactions of this bis-Pt(trpy){sup 2+} complex with nucleic acids was evaluated. Indeed, the complex interacts non-covalently with nucleic acids. Its interactions with DNA are not exactly the same as those of its precedents. Most striking is its ability to form highly immobile bands of DNA upon gel electrophoresis. 232 refs.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Two eletron Platinum Reagents

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Two eletron Platinum Reagents written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of square planar platinum(II) complexes with the mer-coordinating tridentate ligand, pip & sub2;NCN & sup-; (pip & sub2;NCNH = 1,3?bis(piperdylmethyl) benzene) has been synthesized. The lowest emissive excited states of these complexes can be tuned by varying the properties of the monodentate ligand. Colorless halide complexes and the pyridine adduct exhibit weak red emissions originating from a lowest triplet ligand field (3LF) excited state. In contrast, yellow-green emissions from Pt(pip & sub2;NCN)(4-phenylpyridine))+; originate from a lowest 3TT?TT* state. Similarly, (Pt(pip & sub2;NCN))2(mƯL)2+; dimers exhibit emission from a lowest 3LF excited state (L=1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane), a lowest 3TT-TT* excited state (L=trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene or 4,4'-bipyridine) or a lowest triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state (L=pyrazine), depending on the bridging ligand. A series of platinum(II) terpyridyl complexes with aryl ligands has been synthesized. The complexes undergo two one-electron reduction processes near -0.9 and -1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl. In the cyclic voltammograms of complexes unsubstituted at the 2 and 6 positions of the aryl ligand, the first reduction exhibits larger (>59 mV) differences between the anodic and cathodic peak potentials than observed for complexes with methyl groups at the 2 and 6 positions. The accumulated data are consistent with the formation of dimers that reduce at different potentials than the monomers, causing the first reduction wave to appear broadened. Protection of the axial sites of the metal center appears to interfere with dimerization. 77 K glassy solution emission measurements confirm that steric effects can be utilized to control intermolecular metalʺʺʺmetal and ligandʺʺʺligand stacking interactions in solutions of these complexes. The first examples of platinum complexes that undergo reversible and cooperative thermal two-electron transfer have been prepared. The tpy ligand of Pt(tpy)(pip & sub2;NCN))+; is tridentate and the pip & sub2;NCN & sup-; ligand is monodentate, bonded through the central aryl group. Cyclic voltammograms of this complex exhibit two reversible oneƯelectron tpy-centered reductions and a nearly reversible two-electron platinum-centered oxidation at ""0.40 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Electrochemical studies of a series of model complexes establish that both potentially tridentate ligands are required for reversible two-electron transfer. A detailed analysis leads to the suggestion that the ligands preorganize around the platinum(II) center, resulting in a 5- or 6-coordinate electrochemically active species.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Platinum Complexes with Oximes based Ligands

This book was released on 2013 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Magnus' Green Salt and several tetracyanoplatinates represent one-dimensional coordination polymers. They have been examined previously for their unique optical properties and electrical conductivity. Mixed valence tetracyanoplatinates have an appearance and conductivity similar to a metal. Both of these traits are attributed to the close distance between platinum centers in the extended one dimensional structures of these complexes. The aim of this research was to synthesize and characterize a series of new 1D oximes-based platinum complexes with a primary interest in their anisotropic properties. I selected a group of N,O mixed donor chelating ligands with various steric and electronic properties. Therefore, complexes formed are tunable for a particular application as 1D solids. Ten compounds of PtL2 compositions were prepared and used in this study. A visual indication of the formation of the 1D solids with close metallophilic Pt···Pt interactions is in the dark green, blue or purple color of the complexes: Thus, complexes show a charge-transfer band 600-900 nm in the UV-visible spectra. Synthesized Pt-complexes were studied using IR, UV-visible spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. Solutions studies also included dynamic light scattering. Isotopic labeling with 15N of some of the ligands allowed better understanding of their IR and NMR spectra. Four out of ten studied Pt-complexes demonstrated presence of metallophilic Pt···Pt interactions.

Book Synthesis and Photophysical Characterization of Tridentate C N N Platinum II Complexes

Download or read book Synthesis and Photophysical Characterization of Tridentate C N N Platinum II Complexes written by Deepak Ravindranathan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a series of novel, highly luminescent tridentate platinum complexes with general coordination geometry of (C^N*N)-PtL are reported, where "C^N" denotes a coordination of C and N to the platinum to form a five-membered metallacycle and "N*N" denotes a coordination of two N atoms to the platinum to form a six-membered metallacycle; L is a mono anionic ligand such as halides or acetylides. Compared to the known (C^N^N)-PtL type of complexes that were reported to emit with low quantum yields, the structural modification leads to dramatic improvements in phosphorescence efficiency. For example, new complexes (C^N*N)-PtL with L = hexylacetylide and phenylacetylide emitted intensely with quantum yields of 47% and 56%, respectively, latter of which is among the highest quantum yields reported so far for cyclometalated platinum (II) complexes. Selectivity in C-H bond activation by platinum and the exact mechanism of cycloplatination are issues that still remain unclear. A series of ligands which include sp2/sp3, primary/secondary sp3 C-H bonds, and aromatic/vinylic sp2 C-H bonds with a carbon linker between the bipyridine and the carbon groups have been prepared. All ligands have been attempted for cycloplatination in glacial acetic acid and acetonitrile. All ligands produced the same sp2 C-H bond activated complex in both solvents, which suggests that the linker atom does play a role on selectivity.
