Book Synthesis and Characterization of Batio3 Pellets and Thin Films

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Batio3 Pellets and Thin Films written by Meor Ahmad Faris Meor Ahmad Tajudin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barium titanate was synthesized using a solid state approach and an aqueous method. Solid state syntheses were used to prepare barium titanate pellets using a powder metallurgy method. Appropriate amounts of barium carbonate and titanium dioxide powder were mixed together in an agate mortar. Barium titanate pellets were mixed according to 5 different ratios of Ba/Ti which are 1:0.9, 1:0.95, 1:1, 1:1.05, 1:1.1. Pellets were sintered in air at a temperature 1400 °C. Barium titanate thin films were prepared using an aqueous method. Sol-gel of barium titanate was prepared according to the similar ratios as pellets. Thin films of barium titanate sol-gel were deposited using a desktop printer onto a glass substrate and fired at 400 °C. Both pellets and thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, Atomic Force Microscope (thin films only), and impedance spectroscopy. This thesis focuses on determination of dielectric properties of barium titanate including the resistance, capacitance, dielectric constant, relaxation frequency, and loss tangent. The highest density for the barium titanate pellets were 5.90 g/cm3 when a Ba:Ti ratio of 1:1 was used. The average thicknesses of the thin films were 2.89 nm as measured using the atomic force microscope and verified using the scanning electron microscope. Characteristic of barium titanate were observed under various temperatures starting from room temperature up to 450 °C (for pellets) and 300 °C (for thin films). The measured dielectric constant of the pellets at 10 kHz (at room temperature) varied from a maximum of 2810 to a minimum of 1375.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Optical Properties of Barium Titanate Films Sputtered Under Various Conditions

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Optical Properties of Barium Titanate Films Sputtered Under Various Conditions written by John C. Olson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data is presented on BaTiO3 films which were rf sputtered on Pt, quartz and sapphire substrates at various temperatures and gas mixtures. Measurements of density, dielectric constant, electrical conductivity, X-ray diffraction, energy band gap from optical absorption and wavelength, and temperature dependence of refractive index are presented. Measurements were also made on a BaTiO3 single crystal and a hot-pressed ceramic pellet for direct comparison of bulk properties to those of the films. The results of this work demonstrate that a transition of the properties occurs between the amorphous and crystalline states depending on the surface temperature during sputtering. The transition is sluggish up to 700 C above which crystalline properties of the films appear rapidly. (Author).

Book Synthesis and Characterization of BaTiO3 Via Microwave hydrothermal

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of BaTiO3 Via Microwave hydrothermal written by Praveena Kuruva and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barium titanate (BaTiO3) is widely used for electronic devices in the technological ceramic industry because of its ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and piezoelectric properties when it assumes the tetragonal structure. As such, it can be widely used in capacitors, positive temperature coefficient resistors, dynamic random access memories, electromechanics, and nonlinear optics. The synthesis of ultrafine BaTiO3 nanoparticles is theoretically and technologically important for device fabrication. Many novel synthesis techniques have been developed for this important material and discussed in detailed. Traditionally, BaTiO3 is prepared using a high-temperature (>1100 C) solid-state reaction which yields large crystal grains (>3 m) with a wide range of shape and size. Moreover, these powders result in less chemical homogeneity. In this book we have described briefly about wet chemistry methods and we have adopted the microwave hydrothermal method for the synthesis of BaTiO3.This book deals with effect of microwave sintering size on structural and piezoelctric properties of nanocrystalline BaTiO3.

Download or read book Comprehensive Experiments For Materials Science And Engineering written by Fei Ye and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental teaching of materials science and engineering (MSE) is important because the comprehensive applications and the practical knowledge of the professionals are not only an important way for undergraduate students to grasp the knowledge but also to understand the purpose of the study. In order to cultivate students' ability to solve complex engineering problems, more comprehensive experiments should be designed.Besides the essential basic experiments in the first few chapters, most of the experiments designed in this book are comprehensive, hence the title. This book breaks the boundaries in the experimental courses of MSE. The experiments in this book are modularized into five parts, including preliminary exploration of materials science and engineering, fundamentals of chemistry and crystallography, material properties, material preparation and treatment, and material applications. Besides the experiments, the appendices will describe the most relevant aspects of experimental safety, error, and data presentation in a general way. The contents and requirements of the experimental report are suggested. At the end of each chapter, a list of books, journal articles, and websites is provided for extended reading on the topics covered in the chapter. This book covers the main contents of experimental courses of MSE. The experiments cover the forefront of scientific research and the materials industry with appropriate modification. It intends to serve as a textbook for undergraduate students and aims to help teachers find a wide enough variety of experiments to construct in an experimental course.

Book Synthesis and Properties of Ferroelectric Perovskite Oxide Thin Films

Download or read book Synthesis and Properties of Ferroelectric Perovskite Oxide Thin Films written by Andrei Akbasheu and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of oxide thin films has long been of great interested for materials scientists for the application in advanced technologies such as nanoelectronics, photovoltaics and sensors. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is known for being a non-expensive, low-vacuum and low-temperature deposition method able to conformally coat even high-aspect-ratio materials and structures. ALD has been mainly applied to prepare binary oxides such as ZnO and TiO2, and the synthesis of functional complex oxides such as BiFeO3 and CoFe2O4 has little been studied. In the first part of this work, the application of ALD to the preparation of complex oxide thin films based on the Bi-Fe-O system is explored. The important aspects of the ALD approach such as (a) the growth of amorphous Bi-Fe-O by ALD, (b) the epitaxial crystallization of the multiferroic perovskite BiFeO3 films on different substrates, (c) appearance of impurity phases in the films are addressed. Ultimately, the dissertation aims at dispelling the widely held notion that atomic layer deposition is not appropriate for attaining high-quality chemically complex oxide films in the epitaxial form, demonstrating the applicability as an inexpensive, facile, and highly scalable route. The second part of this work is devoted to the preparation and characterization of new ferroelectric thin films as photovoltaic materials. Large optical band gaps of ferroelectric oxides make the optical absorption impractical for solar cell applications. Recently a new strategy for band gap lowering by doping the perovskite KNbO3 with Ba on the A-site and Ni on the B-site resulting in the generation of Ni2+-O vacancy pairs has been shown to significantly increase the optical absorption without loss of ferroelectricity. Using pulsed laser deposition, the synthesis approach to thin films of these new oxides was developed despite significant challenges for the stoichiometry control. The chemical doping approach to the reduction of the band gap was extended to produce new visible-light-absorbing ferroelectric thin films in another perovskite oxide. These materials showed a switchable photovoltaic effect under the visible light illumination along with the retention of the ferroelectric order. This dissertation demonstrates the feasibility of thin film deposition of aforementioned doped ferroelectric oxide perovskites and their ferroelectric photovoltaic properties, which can be extended to other ferroelectric oxides, and provide important information on the synthesis of such materials as thin films.
