Book Directory of World Cinema Russia 2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet and Russian filmmakers have traditionally had uneasy relationships to the concept of genre. This volume rewrites that history by spotlighting some genres not commonly associated with cinema in the region, including Cold War spy movies and science-fiction films; blockbusters and horror films; remakes and adventure films; and chernukha films and serials. Introductory essays establish key aspects of these genres, and directors’ biographies provide the background for the key players. Building on the work of its predecessor, which explored cinema from the time of the tsars to the Putin era, this book will be warmly received by the serious film scholar as well as all those who love Russian cinema. Directory of World Cinema: Russia 2 is an essential companion to the filmic legacy of one of the world’s most storied countries.

Book The Meaning of Superhero Comic Books

Download or read book The Meaning of Superhero Comic Books written by Terrence R. Wandtke and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, scholars have been making the connection between the design of the superhero story and the mythology of the ancient folktale. Moving beyond simple comparisons and common explanations, this volume details how the workings of the superhero comics industry and the conventions of the medium have developed a culture like that of traditional epic storytelling. It chronicles the continuation of the oral/traditional culture of the early 20th century superhero industry in the endless variations on Superman and shows how Frederic Wertham's anti-comic crusade in the mid-1950s helped make comics the most countercultural new medium of the 20th century. By revealing how contemporary superhero comics, like Geoff Johns' Green Lantern and Warren Ellis's The Authority, connect traditional aesthetics and postmodern theories, this work explains why the superhero comic book flourishes in the "new traditional" shape of our acutely self-conscious digital age.

Book Heroism as a Global Phenomenon in Contemporary Culture

Download or read book Heroism as a Global Phenomenon in Contemporary Culture written by Barbara Korte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes and heroic discourse have gained new visibility in the twenty-first century. This is noted in recent research on the heroic, but it has been largely ignored that heroism is increasingly a global phenomenon both in terms of production and consumption. This edited collection aims to bridge this research void and brings together case studies by scholars from different parts of the world and diverse fields. They explore how transnational and transcultural processes of translation and adaptation shape notions of the heroic in non-Western and Western cultures alike. The book provides fresh perspectives on heroism studies and offers a new angle for global and postcolonial studies.

Book Tales Myths and Other Stories

Download or read book Tales Myths and Other Stories written by Dennis Nanni and published by Dennis Nanni. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales, Myths & Other Stories came about as a result of home-schooling my son, Dhanvantari. His assignments included using his imagination to recreate and explore ancient mythology and literature: Plato, the Srimad Bhagavatam, the Decameron, and other tales. More material came from real-life locations in Tennessee and from incidents such as the Roswell UFO crash in 1947. The stories include themes of mythology, science fiction, adventure, and family. There is humor and emotion in every story. As much as possible, I tried to avoid violence, except as an historical footnote, in order to promote a more peaceful mindset for a better world. My sister Debbi, a professional educator, has often told me that reading is becoming a lost art among young people, and it is my hope that this collection of stories will promote a new love of literature and a more vivid imagination among all those who enjoy it.
