Book excerpt: The European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission organized on 29-30 May 1980 a symposium on new developments in the utilization of heated effluents and of recirculation systems for intensive aquaculture, in Stavanger, Norway. There were six consecutive technical sessions during which the various topics were introduced and discussed. These topics referred to water quality, engineering/technology of equipment facilities, biology of cultured organisms, management/economics of rearing systems and socio-economics. A series of recommendations were made, six of them being later endorsed by the Commission at its Eleventh Session. These include (i) the establishment of a working party to analyze the problems related to fish farms effluents (ii) the activation of a correspondence group to propose terminology, format and units of measurement related to flow-through systems and to recirculation systems (iii) the preparation of a code of practice on the introduction of non-indigenous species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written to serve as a general reference for biologists and resource managers with relatively little statistical training. It focuses on both basic concepts and practical applications to provide professionals with the tools needed to assess monitoring methods that can detect trends in populations. It combines classical finite population sampling designs with population enumeration procedures in a unified approach for obtaining abundance estimates for species of interest. The statistical information is presented in practical, easy-to-understand terminology. - Presented in practical, easy-to-understand terminology - Serves as a general reference for biologists and resource managers - Provides the tools needed to detect trends in populations - Introduces a unified approach for obtaining abundance estimates

This book was released on 1981 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document deals with the problems of fish culture, particularly carp, in eastern Europe. It reviews the types, methodology and role of fish culture and the economic analysis of this activity. It shows that there is no universal method for economic analysis of fish culture, especially if it has to be used for comparing economic efficiency of fish farming activities, and presents a general simplified outline of feasible economic analysis.

Download or read book Estuarine Research in the 1980s written by C. Lavett Smith and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1992-07-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hudson River estuary is one of the most intensively studied estuaries in the world. Many environmental and civic groups have struggled with the conflict in the Hudson River area between the desire for a quality environment and the ever-increasing demands of an expanding human population for drinking water, electric power, efficient transportation, and waste disposal. Estuarine Research in the 1980s provides a synoptic overview of the research conducted on the Hudson estuary since 1980. The essays reflect diverse studies of the physical, chemical, and biological ecology of the Hudson River estuary. Included are historical studies of water flow through the estuary; a model to predict the effect of increased withdrawals of fresh water; a summary of the movements of radionuclides from power plants and atmospheric fallout within the Hudson watershed; and a paper on sedimentation in New York harbor. Several essays are devoted to surveys of the fishes of special parts of the estuary. Others deal with the life histories, movements, and population dynamics of individual species. Also included are a section of fisheries methods, including the effects of sampling additional habitats; a study of the effects of channel dredging on water quality; reviews of indices of population abundance; a review of the quality control procedures used in utility-sponsored research; a model of the effects of compensation on the risk of population decline and extinction; a study addressing the energetics of the lower food web; and a plea for the restoration of the badly polluted Croton Bay.
