Although combating this serious development challenge have been rated by a panel of top international economists as having the higher priority, the pandemic remains a social, economic and at times political challenge. Since Thabo Mbeki's speech at the opening of the 13th International AIDS Conference held in Durban, governments, NGOs and funding agencies have started to consider lack of proper understanding and recognition of the relationship between poverty and HIV/AIDS as a major constraint in prevention and control policies and strategies. This book analyses how demographic and socio-economic determinates of poverty affects spread of HIV/AIDS based on a study conducted in Adama City, Ethiopia. It also indicates alternative and/or complementary strategy for actions of policy makers and practitioners who work to break the cycle of the pandemic.

The estimated number of people living with HIV in 2009 was estimated to be around 33.3 million by the United Nation Program on HIV/AIDS( UNAIDS), in sub-Saharan Africa two thirds are infected with HIV and they are from lower socio-economical groups, with women affected more than men( Regional Statistic for HIV and AIDS, 2009) High percentage of population living on less than 1 dollar per day have a higher HIV prevalence as shown by the data provided by UNAIDS. (Global Report, 2006) Industrialized countries have lower HIV prevalence, compared to countries with high percentage of population living below 1 dollar. Book excerpt: This book is the fifth in the AWLAE series. The AWLAE titles address the issue of gendered impacts of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. The present book is based on research in a village in Tanzania about the role of social capital in mitigating AIDS impacts, at the level of the household and within the local community. It contributes to the current knowledge base on social capital by questioning general assumptions on the role of social capital in rural livelihoods in a context of high HIV/AIDS prevalence. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, the research yielded empirical evidence about the limitations of social capital as a resource for the poor. Both the generation and sustenance of social capital at household level are severely challenged by declining access to other livelihood assets as a consequence of HIV/AIDS. In a situation where HIV/AIDS is still shrouded in secrecy and stigma at the community level, a decline of trust in social relations and community institutions as well as a proliferation of witchcraft accusations, could be observed. This insightful publication provides a timely contribution to the discourse on the significance of social capital for the poor, ensuring that social scientists will never look at social capital in quite the same way.

The abovementioned structures have nurtured a culture and politics of neglect, inequalities and marginalisation of disempowered and subordinated children, men and more especially women. These disease-prone circumstances expose human behavioural weaknesses and the limitations in the government structures as well as poor implementation of policies especially within the health care sector. The result is the inefficiencies, insufficiencies and inadequacies in the HIV/AIDS preventive as well as care and support programmes. It therefore makes clear that for the Nigerian state to prove itself in the present scourge of AIDS, it would have to exert all its political will in order to construct a proper caring responsibility as a basic attitude for her citizenry in general and for her overwhelming HIV/AIDS patients in particular. This is a challenge to a health-care reform and an adequate caring responsibility for people living with AIDS. To do this effectively, this book recommends a few steps.

Book excerpt: HIV/AIDS has troubled most African countries, particularly the resource strained nations of Sub-Saharan Africa. Zimbabwe, has not been spared from this crisis. This book analyses how a state of poverty which generally entails lack of resources exposes women to the risk of contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Women in Zimbabwe largely live in poverty, and as such they sometimes engage in unprotected sex as a means of survival. That trend is common in mining towns such as Renco mine, where this study was focusing on. The low levels of education among the women, which is also positively correlated with poverty was found to be among the factors responsible for vulnerability to HIV infection among women. The research recommends that the government should initiate income generating programmes for women so that they can be emancipated from poverty.

Book excerpt: Alan Berkman (1945–2009) was no campus radical in the mid-1960s; he was a promising Ivy League student, football player, Eagle Scout, and fraternity president. But when he was a medical student and doctor, his politics began to change, and soon he was providing covert care to members of revolutionary groups like the Weather Underground and becoming increasingly radicalized by his experiences at the Wounded Knee takeover, at the Attica Prison uprising, and at health clinics for the poor. When the government went after him, he went underground and participated in bombings of government buildings. He was eventually captured and served eight years in some of America's worst penitentiaries, barely surviving two rounds of cancer. After his release in 1992, he returned to medical practice and became an HIV/AIDS physician, teacher, and global health activist. In the final years of his life, he successfully worked to change U.S. policy, making AIDS treatment more widely available in the global south and saving millions of lives around the world. Using Berkman's unfinished prison memoir, FBI records, letters, and hundreds of interviews, Susan M. Reverby sheds fascinating light on questions of political violence and revolutionary zeal in her account of Berkman's extraordinary transformation from doctor to co-conspirator for justice.
