Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two groups of volunteers having no eye disease were examined electro-oculo graphically twice at ten minute intervals. One group smoked in the break, one didn't. In the non-smoking group there are a number of significant correlations between the tested parameters in the dark-period and in the light-period, which could not be found to the same degree in the smoking group. The fact that there were differences between the two groups-even though not interpretable systematicaIly-suggests, that smoking influences physiological processes in the EOG. In the second period of the test, a parallelism in the course of EOG and EEG was observed, the EEG-changes, however, are interpreted more psychologically than pharmacologicaIly. Download or read book Electroretinograms written by Gregor Belusic and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electroretinography (ERG) is a non-invasive electrophysiological method which provides objective information about the function of the retina. Advanced ERG allows to assay the different types of retinal receptors and neurons in human and animal models. This book presents contributions on the recent state of the ERG. The book is divided into three parts. The first, methodological part, reviews standard methods and normatives of human ERG, reports about the advanced spatial, temporal and spectral methods of stimulation in human ERG, and deals with the analysis of the multifocal ERG signal. The second part deals with the ERG in different diseases of the human visual system and in diabetes. The third part presents the ERG in the standard animal models of human retinal disease: mouse, rat, macaque and fruitfly.

Book XII Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing 2010

Download or read book XII Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing 2010 written by Nicolas Pallikarakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 1070 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, the exploding number of new technologies and applications introduced in medical practice, often powered by advances in biosignal processing and biomedical imaging, created an amazing account of new possibilities for diagnosis and therapy, but also raised major questions of appropriateness and safety. The accelerated development in this field, alongside with the promotion of electronic health care solutions, is often on the basis of an uncontrolled diffusion and use of medical technology. The emergence and use of medical devices is multiplied rapidly and today there exist more than one million different products available on the world market. Despite the fact that the rising cost of health care, partly resulting from the new emerging technological applications, forms the most serious and urgent problem for many governments today, another important concern is that of patient safety and user protection, issues that should never be compromised and expelled from the Biomedical Engineering research practice agenda.

Book Visual Electrodiagnosis in Systemic Diseases

Download or read book Visual Electrodiagnosis in Systemic Diseases written by E. Schmöger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research workers at the Eye Clinic of the Medical Academy of Erfurt are proud of having been entrusted, for the second time, with the organization of the yearly ISCEV symposium. Twelve years ago the 6th Symposium was held in Erfurt. This time we turned to Reinhardsbrunn, an old castle situated in the vicinity of Erfurt on the fringes of the wonderful mountainscape of the Thuringian Forest. Reinhardsbrunn castle serves today as a holiday hotel and convention place. It seemed to us to be the right place for carrying on the discussions in a comfortable and informal way after the actual sessions were over. Comparing the scientific reports read at the 6th and 17th Symposium, both organized in Erfurt, one readily becomes aware of the impressive advances in our rapidly developing field of interest. The technical and, more specifically, the electronic advancements have been enormous, especially in the field of recording and processing the visually evoked cortical potentials·. Adually, the addition of this special field of study to our realm, led to the renaming of the Society some years ago. Moreover, it became more and more obvious that interdisciplinary cooperation between ophthalmologists, physiologists, physi cists, technologists and mathematicians is essential. This is also reflected in the composition of our membership.

Book Visual Psychophysics and Physiology

Download or read book Visual Psychophysics and Physiology written by John Armington and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual Psychophysics and Physiology: A Volume Dedicated to Lorrin Riggs illustrates a particular approach to the study of vision. It also celebrates Lorrin Riggs' retirement from formal teaching duties. During his teaching career Riggs advised and directed about fifty doctoral and postdoctoral students, many of whom wrote the chapters that make up this volume. The book is organized into six parts. Part 1 explains the approach to the study of vision, thus providing the philosophical theme for the chapters that follow. Part 2 on physiological mechanisms presents examples of comparative and physiological investigations. Part 3 on sensitivity and adaptation examines new research that bears directly upon the classical problems of visual psychophysics. Here, there is an initial concern with measurement, visual sensitivity, scaling, and adaptation. Part 4 discusses research on color vision while Part 5 on acuity, contrast, and movement considers some of the factors that contribute to these perceptions. Part 6 deals with applications of visual science to other disciplines. Specific examples are given that link visual research with ophthalmology, child development, and the investigation of cognitive variables such as meaning, activation, and so forth.

Book Infant Perception from Sensation to Cognition

Download or read book Infant Perception from Sensation to Cognition written by Leslie B. Cohen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infant Perception: From Sensation to Cognition, Volume I: Basic Visual Processes focuses on the study and programmatic investigations of infant perception, examining early sensory, perceptual, and cognitive systems. This book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 analyzes the major physiological and behavioral techniques used to measure infant vision. Each technique is critically evaluated in terms of the method employed, type of data that can be obtained, and anatomy of the visual system. The neuronal model to explain developmental changes and techniques used to assess infant visual preferences for patterns varying in amount of contour are discussed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 demonstrates the value of the corneal reflection technique for the study of infant attention and visual scanning patterns, while Chapter 4 examines the developmental changes and individual differences in early pattern perception. The last chapter concentrates on the evidence of infant visual preferences for novelty and on the implications of such evidence for models of early recognition memory. This publication is a good reference for pediatricians and clinicians concerned with infant perception.
