Book Global Effects of Environmental Pollution

Download or read book Global Effects of Environmental Pollution written by S.F. Singer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium on the Global Effects of Environmental Pollution has performed an important task; it has helped to determine the world-wide impact of certain types of local pollution and has uncovered certain unsuspected effects that might hold dan gerous implications for the future. This Symposium should help to make the world aware of a crisis that is becoming more ominous and that involves the developing as well as the developed countries - the crisis of the human environment. The causes of this crisis are not difficult to discern. There has been an unprecedented increase in the world's population, an ever-increasing rate of urbanization, and in many countries, a continuous process of industrialization. Essentially, advancing technology has made it possible for a minority of mankind to achieve affluence and holds out hope for improving the well-being of the great majority. But, because it has not been integrated into the natural environment, this very technology - in industry, in agriculture or in transport - is having many undesir able and potentially catastrophic consequences. Our air, our water and our soil are in grave danger. Many species of animal and plant life have become extinct or are facing extinction. The loss to mankind is grave and even the future oflife on earth may be in danger. The challenge is to find ways of repairing the harm already done and to prevent further harm.

Book Air Pollution and Ecosystems

Download or read book Air Pollution and Ecosystems written by P. Mathy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the concluding session of the symposium "Acid Deposition, a Challenge for Europe" held in Karlsruhe in September 1983, Dr. GINJAAR, the former Minister of Health and Environmental Protection of the Netherlands, emphasised the need for setting up a concerted research programme including the effects of air pollution on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The Council of Ministers of the European Community in 1984 adopted a revision of the 3rd Community Programme on Environment comprising contract research and concerted action in the field of the effects of air pollution in eco systems. These research areas were also introduced in the 4th R-D Community Programme on Environment, adopted by the Council of Ministers in 1986 and are subject again to contract research and concerted action. The Commission of the European Community is very concerned to increase the effectiveness of researcn projects carried out within the national programmes, and those undertaken at the Community level. The Commission tends to develop an integrated scientific approach, including not only the physico-chemical behaviour, the transport and the deposition of airborne pollutants but also the effects of these pollutants, in particular on living organisms and ecosystems. With regard to the specific issue of the effects, the Commission is trying to develop and strengthen a multi-disciplinary approach associating biologists, pathologists, eco physiologists, and specialists of soil sciences, within the concerted action, as well as within coordinated research projects.

Book Interactions of Man and His Environment

Download or read book Interactions of Man and His Environment written by Burgess H. Jennings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium was a joint effort, co-sponsored by Northwestern University and Borg-Warner Corporation and included representatives of the latter-day estates of univerSity, industry, and government. All of these groups were deeply interested in participating, since the problems of man and his environment, especially his urban environ ment, are ones which can be solved only through a cooperative effort. The symposium proceedings present a review of the present position of man and his environment and outline the physical and social-science efforts being made to solve the problems posed by man's rapidly changing environment. The format of this book is such that Dr. Luther L. Terry's speech, "Environmental Health: Every body's Business," serves as an introduction to the many-faceted dis cussions on the interactions of man and his environment. Mr. P. B. Gordon's speech "Man and His Environment - Where Are We? Where Are We Going"?" aptly summarizes this symposium and serves this purpose in this publication. Every effort was exerted to make this symposium a general dis cussion meeting where contributions from both the formal speakers and the audience were received. The records of two panel discussions, including comments from the floor and replies by the speakers, are included in this volume. This publication is the result of the coordinated efforts of many contributors: the speakers, Northwestern University, Borg-Warner Corporation, the Symposium Planning Committee consisting of D. W.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In arranging for this Symposium on the Determination of Air Quality, we attempted to present much more than analytical chemi cal information. We realized fully that much of the audience would be interested in that type of information, but we also believed strongly that these analytical chemists want and need to know the fate and significance of their products, i.e., their data. Accord ingly, the participants were drawn from numerous "disciplines" - administrators, medical researchers, engineers, systems analysts, and instrumental and chemical analysts. There was a corresponding diversity of subject matter within the formal presentations. The Symposium was conducted in three half-day sessions. The first of these addressed the general subject of what is being done now regarding the determination of air quality. This general sub ject touched upon present data storage and handling activities, surveillance networks, correlative work with health effects, and efforts to combine (or index) several measured parameters into a single understandable value. The second session dealt with recent developments in the analytical methodology of air quality. Resea~ch and review papers were presented. The final session addressed more avant garde topics, such as the determination of odors, the use of electron spectroscopy for air quality studies, and the important intersociety effort aimed at standardizing analytical procedures in the air quality area. The response to this symposium was gratifying. It strengthened our belief that topical symposia can go far to improve communication between people who are attacking a common problem, but from different directions.

Book Fourth Symposium on Our Environment

Download or read book Fourth Symposium on Our Environment written by Hian Kee Lee and published by Kluwer Academic Pub. This book was released on 1991 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While we human beings, with our ingenuity, have been able to raise our general living standards to unprecedented levels, in the process we have also created an explosion of pollution problems. Today, we are confronted with toxic chemicals in the soil, air and water; destruction of stratospheric ozone; undesirable chemicals in our food; acid rain; indoor air pollution; deforestation and destruction of habitats, and potentially disastrous global climatic change. Meeting the challenges represented by these problems requires the strength of peoples and their governments, a multi-disciplinary approach and international goodwill and cooperation.
