In all there sixteen infinite families of symplectic amalgams together with 62 more exotic examples. The classification touches on many important aspects of modern group theory: * p-local analysis * the amalgam method * representation theory over finite fields; and * properties of the finite simple groups. The account is for the most part self-contained and the wealth of detail makes this book an excellent introduction to these recent developments for graduate students, as well as a valuable resource and reference for specialists in the area.

Book Holomorphic Curves in Low Dimensions

Download or read book Holomorphic Curves in Low Dimensions written by Chris Wendl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an accessible introduction to the applications of pseudoholomorphic curves in symplectic and contact geometry, with emphasis on dimensions four and three. The first half of the book focuses on McDuff's characterization of symplectic rational and ruled surfaces, one of the classic early applications of holomorphic curve theory. The proof presented here uses the language of Lefschetz fibrations and pencils, thus it includes some background on these topics, in addition to a survey of the required analytical results on holomorphic curves. Emphasizing applications rather than technical results, the analytical survey mostly refers to other sources for proofs, while aiming to provide precise statements that are widely applicable, plus some informal discussion of the analytical ideas behind them. The second half of the book then extends this program in two complementary directions: (1) a gentle introduction to Gromov-Witten theory and complete proof of the classification of uniruled symplectic 4-manifolds; and (2) a survey of punctured holomorphic curves and their applications to questions from 3-dimensional contact topology, such as classifying the symplectic fillings of planar contact manifolds. This book will be particularly useful to graduate students and researchers who have basic literacy in symplectic geometry and algebraic topology, and would like to learn how to apply standard techniques from holomorphic curve theory without dwelling more than necessary on the analytical details. This book is also part of the Virtual Series on Symplectic Geometry http://www.springer.com/series/16019

Book An Introduction to Contact Topology

Download or read book An Introduction to Contact Topology written by Hansjörg Geiges and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-13 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text on contact topology is a comprehensive introduction to the subject, including recent striking applications in geometric and differential topology: Eliashberg's proof of Cerf's theorem via the classification of tight contact structures on the 3-sphere, and the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for knots via symplectic fillings of contact 3-manifolds. Starting with the basic differential topology of contact manifolds, all aspects of 3-dimensional contact manifolds are treated in this book. One notable feature is a detailed exposition of Eliashberg's classification of overtwisted contact structures. Later chapters also deal with higher-dimensional contact topology. Here the focus is on contact surgery, but other constructions of contact manifolds are described, such as open books or fibre connected sums. This book serves both as a self-contained introduction to the subject for advanced graduate students and as a reference for researchers.

Book 4 Manifolds

    Book Details:

Download or read book 4 Manifolds written by Selman Akbulut and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the topology of smooth 4-manifolds in an intuitive self-contained way, developed over a number of years by Professor Akbulut. The text is aimed at graduate students and focuses on the teaching and learning of the subject, giving a direct approach to constructions and theorems which are supplemented by exercises to help the reader work through the details not covered in the proofs. The book contains a hundred colour illustrations to demonstrate the ideas rather than providing long-winded and potentially unclear explanations. Key results have been selected that relate to the material discussed and the author has provided examples of how to analyse them with the techniques developed in earlier chapters.

Book Perspectives in Analysis Geometry and Topology

Download or read book Perspectives in Analysis Geometry and Topology written by Ilia Itenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are invited papers from the Marcus Wallenberg symposium and focus on research topics that bridge the gap between analysis, geometry, and topology. The encounters between these three fields are widespread and often provide impetus for major breakthroughs in applications. Topics include new developments in low dimensional topology related to invariants of links and three and four manifolds; Perelman's spectacular proof of the Poincare conjecture; and the recent advances made in algebraic, complex, symplectic, and tropical geometry.

Book Lectures on Lagrangian Torus Fibrations

Download or read book Lectures on Lagrangian Torus Fibrations written by Jonny Evans and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symington's almost toric fibrations have played a central role in symplectic geometry over the past decade, from Vianna's discovery of exotic Lagrangian tori to recent work on Fibonacci staircases. Four-dimensional spaces are of relevance in Hamiltonian dynamics, algebraic geometry, and mathematical string theory, and these fibrations encode the geometry of a symplectic 4-manifold in a simple 2-dimensional diagram. This text is a guide to interpreting these diagrams, aimed at graduate students and researchers in geometry and topology. First the theory is developed, and then studied in many examples, including fillings of lens spaces, resolutions of cusp singularities, non-toric blow-ups, and Vianna tori. In addition to the many examples, students will appreciate the exercises with full solutions throughout the text. The appendices explore select topics in more depth, including tropical Lagrangians and Markov triples, with a final appendix listing open problems. Prerequisites include familiarity with algebraic topology and differential geometry.

Book Surgery on Contact 3 Manifolds and Stein Surfaces

Download or read book Surgery on Contact 3 Manifolds and Stein Surfaces written by Burak Ozbagci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about an investigation of recent developments in the field of sympletic and contact structures on four- and three-dimensional manifolds from a topologist’s point of view. In it, two main issues are addressed: what kind of sympletic and contact structures we can construct via surgery theory and what kind of sympletic and contact structures are not allowed via gauge theory and the newly invented Heegaard-Floer theory.

Book Low Dimensional Topology

Download or read book Low Dimensional Topology written by Tomasz Mrowka and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-dimensional topology has long been a fertile area for the interaction of many different disciplines of mathematics, including differential geometry, hyperbolic geometry, combinatorics, representation theory, global analysis, classical mechanics, and theoretical physics. The Park City Mathematics Institute summer school in 2006 explored in depth the most exciting recent aspects of this interaction, aimed at a broad audience of both graduate students and researchers. The present volume is based on lectures presented at the summer school on low-dimensional topology. These notes give fresh, concise, and high-level introductions to these developments, often with new arguments not found elsewhere. The volume will be of use both to graduate students seeking to enter the field of low-dimensional topology and to senior researchers wishing to keep up with current developments. The volume begins with notes based on a special lecture by John Milnor about the history of the topology of manifolds. It also contains notes from lectures by Cameron Gordon on the basics of three-manifold topology and surgery problems, Mikhail Khovanov on his homological invariants for knots, John Etnyre on contact geometry, Ron Fintushel and Ron Stern on constructions of exotic four-manifolds, David Gabai on the hyperbolic geometry and the ending lamination theorem, Zoltan Szabo on Heegaard Floer homology for knots and three manifolds, and John Morgan on Hamilton's and Perelman's work on Ricci flow and geometrization.

Book Confoliations

    Book Details:
  • Author : Y. Eliashberg
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 0821807765
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Confoliations written by Y. Eliashberg and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first steps of a theory of confoliations designed to link geometry and topology of three-dimensional contact structures with the geometry and topology of codimension-one foliations on three-dimensional manifolds. Developing almost independently, these theories at first glance belonged to two different worlds: The theory of foliations is part of topology and dynamical systems, while contact geometry is the odd-dimensional "brother" of symplectic geometry. However, both theories have developed a number of striking similarities. Confoliations--which interpolate between contact structures and codimension-one foliations--should help us to understand better links between the two theories. These links provide tools for transporting results from one field to the other.
