Book The Story of Symphony Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Symphony Classic Reprint written by Ernest Markham Lee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Symphony The present book is an attempt to put before the reader all that is important in the story of the symphony, from the earliest examples of the form to the present day. Its rise and development are traced briefly, but, I hope, as adequately as the limits of the book allow. Many musical quotations are given, not only from the older, but also from the more recent composers, and a (necessarily) short account of the works of present-day writers is included. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Symphony Stories: North Carolina Little Symphony Children's Concerts 1976-77 You may recall from last year's Symphony Stories that Handel wrote the Royal Fireworks Music at the request of King George II of England. It was 1749 and a long European war had just ended. To celebrate the signing of the peace treaty the King planned to have a spectacular display of fireworks in London's famous Green Park. When Handel realized that his music would be played outdoors he knew it would have to be loud, so his score called for 40 trumpets, 20 horns, 16 oboes, 16 bassoons, a contra bassoon, a serpent, 8 pairs of kettledrums, 12 side drums, flutes, fifes, and a complete string section. To add more noise 18 cannons were placed under the musicians' gallery. They were to fire single shots from time to time throughout the performance. But Handel's elaborate planning was all in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symphony Since Beethoven IF in wandering through some Alpine valley, while we were standing awestruck before a colossal mountain, whose snow - crowned peak rose shim mering in the distance, and we were perhaps deem ing that man happy whose courage and strength were great enough to carry him over this peak to enjoy the view beyond, when suddenly our medi tations were interrupted by a voice at our side saying in all seriousness, I am going to climb over that mountain into the blue clouds beyond, we would have little doubt but that we were con fronted either by a foolhardy dreamer or a mad man. We would scarcely ridicule the man, but rather look upon his simple faith with eyes of pity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Dust: A Symphony The sun goes down in a cold pale flare of light. The trees grow dark: the shadows lean to the east: And lights wink out through the windows, one by one. A clamor of frosty sirens mourns at the night. Pale slate-grey clouds whirl up from the sunken sun. And the wandering one, the inquisitive dreamer of dreams, The eternal asker of answers, stands in the street. And lifts his palms for the first cold ghost of rain. The purple lights leap down the hill before him. The gorgeous night has begun again. 'I will ask them all, I will ask them all their dreams, I will hold my light above them and seek their faces. I will hear them whisper, invisible in their veins...' The eternal asker of answers becomes as the darkness, Or as a wind blown over a myriad forest, Or as the numberless voices of long-drawn rains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Song That Didn't Die: A History of Peoria Symphony Orchestra, 1898-1958 If this were a biography, the first test of its validity would be: how has the protagonist affected the culture of his period and place? Although this is the story of a symphony orchestra and the people who struggled to keep it alive and to bring it to maturity, the question which we strive to answer here is much the same: what has Peoria Symphony accomplished for the city of Peoria, and What is it still accomplishing? And if this story of a valiant and stubborn and persuasive sym phonic song should succeed in revealing to Peorians a source of pride in their city, then, because this is a truly American saga, perhaps it will also prove a source of pride to Americans everywhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symphony Play: A Play in Four Acts There was once an author who had an idea. She had not intended to have it. She had not even been thinking; she had been merely sitting in her window, by the Jerusalem cherry-tree, wondering why she wanted to write a one-act play, wondering why everybody wanted to write one-act plays - when there was hardly a manager in America who would look at one, much less put it on the stage. And yet the author saw that she was going to write the one-act play; and in her mind's eye she saw hundreds of other writers hard at work on one-act plays, and writers not yet born, and writers just entering their teens and sharpening their pencils to begin. It was a pathetic sight, all those wasted plays!...And who that had known the one-act joy and concentration and skill would ever willingly abandon it for loose threes and fours or even the classical fives of Shakespeare's perfect form? And then suddenly the idea came to her - She sat and looked at it. She stared at it - a little unbelieving - and she looked thoughtfully at the Jerusalem cherry-tree. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Washington Symphony There were two points in the management of her household upon which Mrs. Leigh-scott was the more particular from having been often annoyed and surprised at their non-observance by persons who ought to know better. One was the prompt response to the door-bell by man or maid-servant in proper attire. Another was that her servants were forbidden to say engaged at the door, Mrs. Leigh-scott hold ing that when the mistress of the house was out of that portion in which visitors were received, the word was strictly true. But a visitor once admitted, and the card received, under no circumstances, save those of the most urgent necessity, would this thorough-bred wo man deny herself.
