Book Symmetry And Perturbation Theory Spt 98

Download or read book Symmetry And Perturbation Theory Spt 98 written by Antonio Degasperis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-12-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second workshop on “Symmetry and Perturbation Theory” served as a forum for discussing the relations between symmetry and perturbation theory, and this put in contact rather different communities. The extension of the rigorous results of perturbation theory established for ODE's to the case of nonlinear evolution PDE's was also discussed: here a number of results are known, particularly in connection with (perturbation of) integrable systems, but there is no general frame as solidly established as in the finite-dimensional case. In aiming at such an infinite-dimensional extension, for which standard analytical tools essential in the ODE case are not available, it is natural to look primarily at geometrical and topological methods, and first of all at those based on exploiting the symmetry properties of the systems under study (both the unperturbed and the perturbed ones); moreover, symmetry considerations are in several ways basic to our understanding of integrability, i.e. finally of the unperturbed systems on whose understanding the whole of perturbation theory has unavoidably to rely. This volume contains tutorial, regular and contributed papers. The tutorial papers give students and newcomers to the field a rapid introduction to some active themes of research and recent results in symmetry and perturbation theory.

Book Nonlinear Hyperbolic Problems Theoretical Applied and Computational Aspects

Download or read book Nonlinear Hyperbolic Problems Theoretical Applied and Computational Aspects written by Andrea Donato and published by Notes on Numerical Fluid Mechanics and Multidisciplinary Design. This book was released on 1993 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains original papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems which was held on April 3-8, 1992 in Taormina (Sicily), Italy. The aim of the Conferences in this cycle is to bring together scientists with interest in theo retical, applied and computational aspects of hyperbolic partial differential equations. The contributions, well balanced among these three aspects, deal with: mathematical theory of wave propagation, kinetic theory, existence, uniqueness and stabil ity of solutions, mathematical modeling of physical phenomena, stability and convergence of numerical schemes, multidimensional computational applications, etc. The papers are printed in the authors' alphabetic order following the idea both of mixing together topics of interest to different areas and of considering either theoretical results connected with applied problems or new applications with an essential mathemat ical approach. The Proceedings from the previous Conferences held in St. Etienne (1986), Aachen (1988) and Uppsala (1990) appeared respectively as: * Lecture Notes in Mathematics, 1270, P. Carasso, P. A. Raviart & D. Serre (Eds.), Springer-Verlag (1987) * Notes on Numerical Fluid Mechanics, 24, J. Ballmann & R. Jeltsch (Eds.), Vieweg (1989 ) * Third International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems, B. Engquist & B. Gustafs son (Eds.), Vol. I, II, Studentlitteratur, Uppsala University (1991). The organizers and the editors of the Conference would like to thank the Scientific Committee for the generous support, for suggesting the invited lectures, and for selecting the contributed papers.

Book Nonlinear Symmetries and Nonlinear Equations

Download or read book Nonlinear Symmetries and Nonlinear Equations written by G. Gaeta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of (nonlinear) dift"erential equations was S. Lie's motivation when he created what is now known as Lie groups and Lie algebras; nevertheless, although Lie group and algebra theory flourished and was applied to a number of dift"erent physical situations -up to the point that a lot, if not most, of current fun damental elementary particles physics is actually (physical interpretation of) group theory -the application of symmetry methods to dift"erential equations remained a sleeping beauty for many, many years. The main reason for this lies probably in a fact that is quite clear to any beginner in the field. Namely, the formidable comple:rity ofthe (algebraic, not numerical!) computations involved in Lie method. I think this does not account completely for this oblivion: in other fields of Physics very hard analytical computations have been worked through; anyway, one easily understands that systems of dOlens of coupled PDEs do not seem very attractive, nor a very practical computational tool.
