Book Differential Geometry Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Differential Geometry Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces written by Sigurdur Helgason and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001-06-12 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great book ... a necessary item in any mathematical library. --S. S. Chern, University of California A brilliant book: rigorous, tightly organized, and covering a vast amount of good mathematics. --Barrett O'Neill, University of California This is obviously a very valuable and well thought-out book on an important subject. --Andre Weil, Institute for Advanced Study The study of homogeneous spaces provides excellent insights into both differential geometry and Lie groups. In geometry, for instance, general theorems and properties will also hold for homogeneous spaces, and will usually be easier to understand and to prove in this setting. For Lie groups, a significant amount of analysis either begins with or reduces to analysis on homogeneous spaces, frequently on symmetric spaces. For many years and for many mathematicians, Sigurdur Helgason's classic Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces has been--and continues to be--the standard source for this material. Helgason begins with a concise, self-contained introduction to differential geometry. Next is a careful treatment of the foundations of the theory of Lie groups, presented in a manner that since 1962 has served as a model to a number of subsequent authors. This sets the stage for the introduction and study of symmetric spaces, which form the central part of the book. The text concludes with the classification of symmetric spaces by means of the Killing-Cartan classification of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbb{C}$ and Cartan's classification of simple Lie algebras over $\mathbb{R}$, following a method of Victor Kac. The excellent exposition is supplemented by extensive collections of useful exercises at the end of each chapter. All of the problems have either solutions or substantial hints, found at the back of the book. For this edition, the author has made corrections and added helpful notes and useful references. Sigurdur Helgason was awarded the Steele Prize for Differential Geometry, Lie Groups, and Symmetric Spaces and Groups and Geometric Analysis.

Book Rigidity and Symmetry

Download or read book Rigidity and Symmetry written by Robert Connelly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains recent contributions to the fields of rigidity and symmetry with two primary focuses: to present the mathematically rigorous treatment of rigidity of structures and to explore the interaction of geometry, algebra and combinatorics. Contributions present recent trends and advances in discrete geometry, particularly in the theory of polytopes. The rapid development of abstract polytope theory has resulted in a rich theory featuring an attractive interplay of methods and tools from discrete geometry, group theory, classical geometry, hyperbolic geometry and topology. Overall, the book shows how researchers from diverse backgrounds explore connections among the various discrete structures with symmetry as the unifying theme. The volume will be a valuable source as an introduction to the ideas of both combinatorial and geometric rigidity theory and its applications, incorporating the surprising impact of symmetry. It will appeal to students at both the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as post docs, structural engineers and chemists.

Book Symmetric Banach Manifolds and Jordan C Algebras

Download or read book Symmetric Banach Manifolds and Jordan C Algebras written by H. Upmeier and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-18 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book links two of the most active research areas in present day mathematics, namely Infinite Dimensional Holomorphy (on Banach spaces) and the theory of Operator Algebras (C*-Algebras and their non-associative generalizations, the Jordan C*-Algebras). It organizes in a systematic way a wealth of recent results which are so far only accessible in research journals and contains additional original contributions. Using Banach Lie groups and Banach Lie algebras, a theory of transformation groups on infinite dimensional manifolds is presented which covers many important examples such as Grassmann manifolds and the unit balls of operator algebras. The theory also has potential importance for mathematical physics by providing foundations for the construction of infinite dimensional curved phase spaces in quantum field theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen two parallel developments, one in computer science, the other in mathematics, both dealing with the same kind of combinatorial structures: networks with strong symmetry properties or, in graph-theoretical language, vertex-transitive graphs, in particular their prototypical examples, Cayley graphs. In the design of large interconnection networks it was realised that many of the most fre quently used models for such networks are Cayley graphs of various well-known groups. This has spawned a considerable amount of activity in the study of the combinatorial properties of such graphs. A number of symposia and congresses (such as the bi-annual IWIN, starting in 1991) bear witness to the interest of the computer science community in this subject. On the mathematical side, and independently of any interest in applications, progress in group theory has made it possible to make a realistic attempt at a complete description of vertex-transitive graphs. The classification of the finite simple groups has played an important role in this respect.

Book Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups

Download or read book Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups written by Pierre-Loic Meliot and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups is the most up-to-date abstract algebra book on the subject of symmetric groups and representation theory. Utilizing new research and results, this book can be studied from a combinatorial, algorithmic or algebraic viewpoint. This book is an excellent way of introducing today’s students to representation theory of the symmetric groups, namely classical theory. From there, the book explains how the theory can be extended to other related combinatorial algebras like the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. In a clear and concise manner, the author presents the case that most calculations on symmetric group can be performed by utilizing appropriate algebras of functions. Thus, the book explains how some Hopf algebras (symmetric functions and generalizations) can be used to encode most of the combinatorial properties of the representations of symmetric groups. Overall, the book is an innovative introduction to representation theory of symmetric groups for graduate students and researchers seeking new ways of thought.

Book Quantum Group Symmetry and Q tensor Algebras

Download or read book Quantum Group Symmetry and Q tensor Algebras written by L. C. Biedenharn and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum groups are a generalization of the classical Lie groups and Lie algebras and provide a natural extension of the concept of symmetry fundamental to physics. This monograph is a survey of the major developments in quantum groups, using an original approach based on the fundamental concept of a tensor operator. Using this concept, properties of both the algebra and co-algebra are developed from a single uniform point of view, which is especially helpful for understanding the noncommuting co-ordinates of the quantum plane, which we interpret as elementary tensor operators. Representations of the q-deformed angular momentum group are discussed, including the case where q is a root of unity, and general results are obtained for all unitary quantum groups using the method of algebraic induction. Tensor operators are defined and discussed with examples, and a systematic treatment of the important (3j) series of operators is developed in detail. This book is a good reference for graduate students in physics and mathematics.

Book Group Identities on Units and Symmetric Units of Group Rings

Download or read book Group Identities on Units and Symmetric Units of Group Rings written by Gregory T Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let FG be the group ring of a group G over a field F. Write U(FG) for the group of units of FG. It is an important problem to determine the conditions under which U(FG) satisfies a group identity. In the mid 1990s, a conjecture of Hartley was verified, namely, if U(FG) satisfies a group identity, and G is torsion, then FG satisfies a polynomial identity. Necessary and sufficient conditions for U(FG) to satisfy a group identity soon followed. Since the late 1990s, many papers have been devoted to the study of the symmetric units; that is, those units u satisfying u* = u, where * is the involution on FG defined by sending each element of G to its inverse. The conditions under which these symmetric units satisfy a group identity have now been determined. This book presents these results for arbitrary group identities, as well as the conditions under which the unit group or the set of symmetric units satisfies several particular group identities of interest.

Book Hecke Algebras with Unequal Parameters

Download or read book Hecke Algebras with Unequal Parameters written by George Lusztig and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hecke algebras arise in representation theory as endomorphism algebras of induced representations. One of the most important classes of Hecke algebras is related to representations of reductive algebraic groups over $p$-adic or finite fields. In 1979, in the simplest (equal parameter) case of such Hecke algebras, Kazhdan and Lusztig discovered a particular basis (the KL-basis) in a Hecke algebra, which is very important in studying relations between representation theory and geometry of the corresponding flag varieties. It turned out that the elements of the KL-basis also possess very interesting combinatorial properties. In the present book, the author extends the theory of the KL-basis to a more general class of Hecke algebras, the so-called algebras with unequal parameters. In particular, he formulates conjectures describing the properties of Hecke algebras with unequal parameters and presents examples verifying these conjectures in particular cases. Written in the author's precise style, the book gives researchers and graduate students working in the theory of algebraic groups and their representations an invaluable insight and a wealth of new and useful information.

Book Eigenfunction Expansions Operator Algebras and Riemannian Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Eigenfunction Expansions Operator Algebras and Riemannian Symmetric Spaces written by Robert M Kauffman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-09-25 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Note pays particular attention to studying the convergence of the expansion and to the case where D is a family of partial differential operators. All operators in the natural von Neumann algebraassociated with D, and also unbounded operators affiliated with this algebra, are expanded simultaneously in terms of generalized eigenprojections. These are operators which carry a natural space associated with D into its dual. The elements of the range of these eigenprojections are the eigenfunctions, which solve the appropriate eigenvalue equations by duality. The spectral measure is abstractly defined, but its absolute continuity with respect to Hausdorf measure on the joint spectrum is shown to occur when the eigenfunctions are very well-behaved. Uniqueness results are given showing that any two expansions arise from each other by a simple change of variable. A considerable effort has been made to keep the book self-contained for readers with a background in functional analysis including a basic understanding of the theory of von Neumann algebras. More advanced topics in functional analysis, andan introduction to differential geometry and differential operator theory, mostly without proofs, are given in an extensive section on background material.

Book Strong Rigidity of Locally Symmetric Spaces

Download or read book Strong Rigidity of Locally Symmetric Spaces written by G. Daniel Mostow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1973-12-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locally symmetric spaces are generalizations of spaces of constant curvature. In this book the author presents the proof of a remarkable phenomenon, which he calls "strong rigidity": this is a stronger form of the deformation rigidity that has been investigated by Selberg, Calabi-Vesentini, Weil, Borel, and Raghunathan. The proof combines the theory of semi-simple Lie groups, discrete subgroups, the geometry of E. Cartan's symmetric Riemannian spaces, elements of ergodic theory, and the fundamental theorem of projective geometry as applied to Tit's geometries. In his proof the author introduces two new notions having independent interest: one is "pseudo-isometries"; the other is a notion of a quasi-conformal mapping over the division algebra K (K equals real, complex, quaternion, or Cayley numbers). The author attempts to make the account accessible to readers with diverse backgrounds, and the book contains capsule descriptions of the various theories that enter the proof.
