Book Guide to the Symbols of the 49 Values

Download or read book Guide to the Symbols of the 49 Values written by Edoardo Conte and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to the symbols of the 49 values is the answer to these times of change in which the backlash of a materialism, leveling the culture of the masses, wreaks havoc on common sense and gives value to forms rather than contents. The existential degradation barbarizes the minds, while the deliberate emotional emphasis and foul language that perverse on social networks condition most to follow illusory stereotypes in a sort of collective hypnosis. The danger of a brutalization of the population, especially of the youth, to the mere necessities of survival, is looming and worrying; therefore, it is necessary to re-establish the basis of civilization and peaceful coexistence by rediscovering and reactivating the values that qualify existence. The book proposes a qualitative architecture of life with which the reader can confront and find correspondences to bring out a subjective vision. It is, therefore, a sort of guide, but also a personal diary in which each value corresponds to a card containing the graphic symbol; the explanation of the value and the seed-thought to be used in meditation, to then write, in the appropriate spaces, the personal result with respect to each of the 49 fundamental values.

Book Inflation of Symbols

Download or read book Inflation of Symbols written by Orrin Edgar Klapp and published by Transaction Pub. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today Americans are used to keeping tabs on inflation through the use of price indexes and interest rates, and to restraining it through the use of Federal Reserve monetary policy. No tabs, however, are kept on other kinds of inflation, of symbols other than money. Klapp looks into what the inflation of value might mean and how it occurs in social relations, popular culture, mass contagions, fads and fashions, even smiles and kisses. In Klapp's view, symbolic or cultural inflation applies to all social processes in which enlargement, expansion, or oversupply leads to the diminishing of value of a symbol. Its symptoms have been noted in the arts, in communications, and in politics, but there have been few, if any, attempts to analyze the mechanism by which such inflation occurs. The author attempts such an analysis, structuring it around those mechanisms he terms "social magnifiers." On the simplest level, there is mere overstatement, the exaggeration of claims that lose credibility as the reality is seen to fall short. More socially complex are types of magnifiers that involve shared cultural values and large groups of people. These include "crusading," the rhetorical inflation of a conflict into a war of good versus evil; emotional contagion, which through uncritical suggestibility draws large numbers of people into actions that exaggerate value; and self-expansion through identification with others, the vicarious triumphs and careers of heroes and celebrities, a process Klapp terms "emotional hitchhiking. "Finally, there is the market-like type of cultural inflation in which oversupply of a symbol leads to a weakening of its power to elicit desired responses. Klapp demonstrates how this market concept applies to such symbols as credentials, medals, smiles, kisses, greeting cards, religious tokens, fashions, and finally to information itself. The result of Klapp's study is to bring into focus this vast, pervasive, largely unwitting sort of inflation that eats away at cultural values that carry no price in the money market and to isolate various conditions--massness, egalitari-anism, loss of scarcity--that favor social inflation and thereby help us to understand (even to control?) it as a source of disappointment in modern society. This book will be of interest to sociologists, economists, and students of American culture concerned with the erosion of values in an information age.

Book Symbols and Their Meanings

Download or read book Symbols and Their Meanings written by Jack Tresidder and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How did a symbol such as the cross, which today is so commonly associated with Christianity, come to appear in the pre-Columbian art of Central America? Why does the crow stand for death, evil and bad luck in Europe - but signify a creative and civilizing force in Native American culture? Every traditional symbol bears an elemental power that transcends boundaries and holds significance for many cultures. But the ways in which we interpret such power have varied tremendously around the world and through the ages. In Symbols and Their Meanings, author and art historian Jack Tresidder explores core symbols from across global cultures, through themes common to the world's spiritual imagination. Thought-provoking and visually stunning, Symbols and their Meanings offers a uniquely accessible compendium of symbols and symbol systems, and shows how the profound messages conveyed by symbols have enriched the world's cultural and spiritual heritage."--Front cover flap.
