Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 10, Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University, language: English, abstract: The poetry as well as the whole art of William Blake is abundant with symbols and allegories that carry a strong charge – inspirational, charismatic and religious. It is the result of numerous factors including the peculiarity of Blake’s epoch, the city he was born, raised and lived in, the traditions of his family, and, of course, his personal features that are imprinted on every line of his writings and every engraving or picture he created. Moreover, he was the first poet after Edmund Spenser who produced his own mythological reality [1, 192], which proves the power of his imagination and creative potential. In his childhood and youth, William Blake was surrounded and impacted by objects, phenomena and people that were of pronounced symbolic character – his Dissenter origin, Bible study, visions and revelations that visited him throughout all his life, work in Westminster Abbey [1, 74] – and they could not but be incorporated in his masterpieces. If we add here interest in and adherence to Emmanuel Svedenborg and Jacob Boehme [2, xxi], the background of his symbolism may become more or less clear.

Book excerpt: William Blake's 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience: Showing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul' is a collection of poems that explore the dual nature of humanity, portraying both the purity and simplicity of innocence and the complexity and darkness of experience. Blake's lyrical style and use of symbolism make this work a quintessential example of Romantic poetry, as he delves into themes of childhood, religion, and societal norms. The contrast between the two states of the human soul is vividly depicted through the juxtaposition of the poems in this collection, inviting readers to contemplate the intricacies of human nature and existence. William Blake's unique vision and poetic craftsmanship shine through in each verse, making 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' a timeless classic in English literature. William Blake, a visionary poet and artist, was deeply influenced by his spiritual beliefs and political views, which are reflected in his works. His exploration of the human soul in 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' showcases his profound understanding of the human condition and his ability to capture the nuances of emotion and morality. Blake's revolutionary approach to poetry and art set him apart from his contemporaries, making him a revered figure in the Romantic movement. I highly recommend 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience' to readers who appreciate thought-provoking poetry that delves into the complexities of the human experience. William Blake's masterpiece offers a profound exploration of innocence and experience that will resonate with audiences across generations.

Book excerpt: William Blake is one of England’s most fascinating writers; he was not only a groundbreaking poet, but also a painter, engraver, radical, and mystic. Although Blake was dismissed as an eccentric by his contemporaries, his powerful and richly symbolic poetry has been a fertile source of inspiration to the many writers and artists who have followed in his footsteps. In this collection Patti Smith brings together her personal favorites of Blake’s poems, including the complete Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, to give a singular picture of this unique genius, whom she calls in her moving introduction “the spiritual ancestor” of generations of poets.
