Download or read book Symbols and the Image of the State in Eurasia written by Anita Sengupta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the significance of cultural symbols/‘images’ in the nation-building of Eurasian states that emerged out of the former Soviet Union. It particularly focuses on the cases of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in the post-Soviet era and argues that the relationship between nation- and image-building has been particularly relevant for Eurasian states. In an increasingly globalized world, nation-state building is no longer an activity confined to the domestic arena. The situating of the state within the global space and its ‘image’ in the international community (nation branding) becomes in many ways as crucial as the projection of homogeneity within the state. The relationship between politics and cultural symbols/ ‘images’, therefore acquires and represents multiple possibilities. It is these possibilities that are the focus of Symbols and the Image of the State in Eurasia. It argues that the relationship between politics and cultural symbols/ ‘images’, became particularly relevant for states that emerged in the wake of the disintegration of the Soviet Union in Central Asia. It extends the argument further to contend that the image that the state projects is largely determined by its legacy and it attempts to do this by taking into account the Uzbek and Kazakh cases. In the shaping of the post-Soviet future these legacies and projections as well as the policy implications of these projections in terms of governmentality and foreign policy have been decisive.

Book excerpt: Symbols, a book in the Multiage Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3, gives students the opportunity to explore what symbols are and why they are used. The books in Prufrock's new Differentiated Curriculum Kits employ a differentiated, integrated curriculum based on broad themes. This all-in-one curriculum helps teachers save planning time, ensure compliance with national standards, and most importantly, pique their students' natural excitement and interest in discovery. By participating in the wide variety of activities in the Multiage Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3, students will discover the symbols around them and gain a lifelong desire to learn. Although we are surrounded by symbols for most of our lives, we take most of them for granted. In this study, students will learn why symbols are used, where they originated from, and how they are universally accepted. Symbols presents a study of today's practical symbols, as well as ancient symbols from Chinese and Mayan cultures. Symbols, along with the other books in the Multiage Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grades 1-3 (Cycles, Discoveries, Faces, and Gifts), makes teaching advanced learners easier! Grades 1-3 This curriculum unit makes use of the following great children's literature books: The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch; The Flying Dragon Room by Audrey Wood; Kingdom of the Sun: A Book of the Planets by Jacqueline Mitton; Math Curse by Jon Scieszka; Uncle Sam and Old Glory by Delno C. West; and Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco.
Download or read book The Lautsi Papers Multidisciplinary Reflections on Religious Symbols in the Public School Classroom written by Jeroen Temperman and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, debates about religious symbols in the public space are reformulated as human rights questions and put before national and international judges. Particularly in the area of education, legitimate interests are manifold and often collide. Children’s educational and religious rights, parental liberties vis-à-vis their children, religious traditions, state obligations in the area of public school education, the state neutrality principle, and the professional rights and duties of teachers are all principles that may warrant priority attention. Each from their own discipline and perspective––ranging from legal (human rights) scholars, (legal) philosophers, political scientists, comparative law scholars, and country-specific legal experts––these experts contribute to the question of whether in the present-day pluralist state there is room for state symbolism (e.g. crucifixes in classroom) or personal religious signs (e.g. cross necklaces or kirpans) or attire (e.g. kippahs or headscarves) in the public school classroom.

Download or read book Deep Symbols written by Edward Farley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an absorbing and exceptionally perceptive account of how deep symbols or words of power (which tend to be a culture's normaltive language) have undergone diminishment in a contemporary postmodern society. Edward Farley explains that such diminishment does not necessarily imply their demise since traces of these symbols remain and invite their rethinking. Two introductory chapters spell out the character and prospect of deep symbols in postmodern society. Then follow five chapters, each of which considers a particular deep symbol: tradition, obligation (duty), reality, law, and hope. A concluding chapter shows the structural entanglement of these symbols with each other and their relation to the sacred and the interhuman. From the opening chapter- "Words of power, that is, deep and enduring symbols that shape the values of a society and guide the life of faith, morality, and action are subject to powerful forces of discreditation and even disenchantment. If this is so, we must find ways to recover their power or live without them." Edward Farley is Professor of Theology at Vanderbilt University and the author of many books, including Good and Evil: Interpreting a Human Condition.
