Like a lot of best friends, Sylvie and True are different in many ways. Sylvie sleeps in a bed; True sleeps in the bathtub. Sylvie leaves the apartment by going through the door and down the stairs; True slides out the window and down a drainpipe. But, of course, they have things in common, too - they both love food and bowling - and together they make quite a team. Told in four short and easy-to-read chapters, and illustrated in warm watercolors, this is a sweet and funny story about the give-and-take of friendship.

Sylvie, the beautiful, brilliant, successful older daughter of the Lee family, flies to the Netherlands for one final visit with her dying grandmother—and then vanishes. Amy, the sheltered baby of the Lee family, is too young to remember a time when her parents were newly immigrated and too poor to keep Sylvie. Seven years older, Sylvie was raised by a distant relative in a faraway, foreign place, and didn’t rejoin her family in America until age nine. Timid and shy, Amy has always looked up to her sister, the fierce and fearless protector who showered her with unconditional love. But what happened to Sylvie? Amy and her parents are distraught and desperate for answers. Sylvie has always looked out for them. Now, it’s Amy’s turn to help. Terrified yet determined, Amy retraces her sister’s movements, flying to the last place Sylvie was seen. But instead of simple answers, she discovers something much more valuable: the truth. Sylvie, the golden girl, kept painful secrets . . . secrets that will reveal more about Amy’s complicated family—and herself—than she ever could have imagined. A deeply moving story of family, secrets, identity, and longing, Searching for Sylvie Lee is both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive portrait of an immigrant family. You can’t put it down!” – Jenna Bush Hager, Today Show Book Club Pick

Book excerpt: A Guide to The Theory and Practice of Creating Authentic Relationships When’s the last time you felt as composed as you portray to your boss, family and friends? If there’s a discord between the two, you’re not alone. Humans are master pretenders—we often seem stronger, calmer and more mature than we really are, while the truth is we’re full of doubts and self-criticism that pushes us to borrow reassurance from friends, beliefs from strangers on the internet, or attention that, in the moment, makes us feel successful, but leaves us totally hollow and burnt out. True to You is a relatable self-help guide for people who want to learn to live less focused on others’ reactions and more confidently by their own principles. Readers will learn how to: · Interrupt relationship patterns that keep you stuck. · Rely less on praise and approval from others. · Develop a solid sense of self in anxious times. · Build more authentic and rewarding relationships. Dr. Smith uses examples from the lives of her therapy clients to explain how we borrow confidence, calmness, and beliefs from our relationships and offers actionable steps and exercises for building a life with your own best-thinking. With a healthy dose of humor, she unpacks the science of our social nature, explaining why we try so hard to be what others want us to be and how we can start living from the inside out. By learning how to be more responsible for yourself, rather than over-responsible for everyone else, you can find the freedom to develop richer relationships, pursue what’s important to you, and feel steadier in this very anxious world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Riley Sager, The Hawthorne School is a twisty psychological suspense about the lengths one mother will go for her child, inspired by present-day obsession with cults and true crime. Claudia Morgan is overwhelmed. She's a single parent trying the best that she can, but her four-year-old son, Henry, is a handful--for her and for his preschool. When Claudia hears about a school with an atypical teaching style near her Chicagoland home, she has to visit. The Hawthorne School is beautiful and has everything she dreams of for Henry: time to play outside, music, and art. The head of the school, Zelma, will even let Claudia volunteer to cover the cost of tuition. The school is good for Henry: his "behavioral problems" disappear, and he comes home subdued instead of rageful. But there's something a bit off about the school, its cold halls, and its enigmatic headmistress. When Henry brings home stories of ceremonies in the woods and odd rules, Claudia's instincts tell her that something isn't quite right, and she begins to realize she's caught in a web of manipulations and power. The author's work as a psychotherapist, with a focus on narcissistic manipulation and addictive power dynamics, guides this exploration of a young mother wanting to do the best for her child.

Book excerpt: Sylvie Lemercier is an intelligent, attractive, and "sportive" forty-year-old whose husband, Nicholas, has just been murdered. Born in rural New Zealand, she retains something of an appealing naivete distilled by a discerning mind. But after his death, Sylvie discovers, with reluctant fascination, more about Nicholas than she ever could have imagined. Nicholas and Sylvie meet the day the Berlin Wall came down when Sylvie was only twenty-one. "Her mind coveted the new politics as much as her body yearned for sexual adventure. Sylvie's optimistic sense of history had not yet ripened into any kind of caution. A sense of longing that she couldn't quite comprehend conspired with the moment. She welcomed the caresses that seduced her. Submission had never been so pleasurable." Nicolas turns out to be a womanizer who participated in art theft with ex-members of the infamous Stasi, the East German Secret Police. He managed to stay just one step ahead of the law, but years later his past finally catches up. Sylvie receives an unexpected visit from a friend of Nicholas, revealing more unpalatable truths of her dead husband's past. She travels to France and Berlin, to discover yet even more secrets, ex-lovers and, ultimately, her husband's killer. This explosive novel takes unexpected turns as it reaches its hopeful and poignant climax.

Download or read book Depth written by Michael Strevens and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean for scientists to truly understand, rather than to merely describe, how the world works? Michael Strevens proposes a novel theory of scientific explanation and understanding that overhauls and augments the familiar causal approach to explanation. What is replaced is the test for explanatorily relevant causal information: Strevens discards the usual criterion of counterfactual dependence in favor of a criterion that turns on a process of progressive abstraction away from a fully detailed, physical causal story. The augmentations include the introduction of a new, non-causal explanatory relevance relation—entanglement—and an independent theory of the role of black-boxing and functional specification in explanation. The abstraction-centered notion of difference-making leads to a rich causal treatment of many aspects of explanation that have been either ignored or handled inadequately by earlier causal approaches, including the explanation of laws and other regularities, with particular attention to the explanation of physically contingent high-level laws, idealization in explanation, and probabilistic explanation in deterministic systems, as in statistical physics, evolutionary biology, and medicine. The result is an account of explanation that has especially significant consequences for the higher-level sciences: biology, psychology, economics, and other social sciences.

Book Imagining Women s Conventual Spaces in France 1600 1800

Download or read book Imagining Women s Conventual Spaces in France 1600 1800 written by Barbara R. Woshinsky and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blending history, architecture and literary analysis, this ground-breaking study explores the convent's place in the early modern imagination. After the Council of Trent imposed strict claustral enclosure, the nun became an intensified object of desire in male-authored narratives. Convents also inspired feminutopian discourses by women writers. Recent criticism has identified spaces that women have made their own: the ruelle, the salon, the hearth of fairy tales. Woshinsky's book definitively adds the convent to this list.

Once, Céleste Artois had dreams of being an artist. But when the creative elite of Paris dashed those plans, she turned her talents to forgery and cons. She and the Enchantresses—her two fellow thieves and best friends—see Paris as a rich hunting ground for marks. Yet even though their hideout in Père Lachaise cemetery is bursting with francs, Céleste cannot rest. There is always more to take. And the blood she has begun to cough into her handkerchief means her time is running out. But everything changes when she encounters Rafe, a mysterious and beautiful stranger who leads her to an enchanted salon—a place where artists can bring wondrous imaginations to life. Céleste is captivated by this establishment, and learns of the existence of magical Paris, hidden in the pockets and alleys of the ordinary world, if one only knows where to look. Rafe offers Céleste an irresistible deal: the gift of time in exchange for lending him and his benefactor her forging talents. But one must be careful making deals with devils, and there's more to this hidden world than meets the eye. Shadows have begun to circle Paris.
