Book excerpt: Elizabeth Gaskell's Sylvia's Lovers begins in a lively, upbeat tone; its first volume is undoubtedly delightful and might, in the first instance, lead a reader to assume that the novel is meant to be primarily a romantic story. However, as you read on through the "gathering shadows" of the second volume, and the unrestrained melodrama and improbable coincidences of the third, the novel concludes as something along the lines of a love story gone wrong. It's Monkshaven during the French Revolutionary Wars; press gangs are seizing the crews of returning whalers to force into the Navy. Sylvia's imagination has been fired by Kinraid's heroics in trying to protect his shipmates by having a shoot out with one of these gangs, during which he's killed two of its members, only escaping trial through being "kicked aside and left for dead" himself.

Book excerpt: ‘Sylvia's Lovers’ is a novel by English novelist and short story writer Elizabeth Gaskell, best-known for her novels ́North and South’, ‘Mary Barton’, and ‘Cranford’. Set in the 1790s in an English seaside town, ‘Sylvia’s Lovers’ tells the story of Sylvia Robson, caught between the love of her cousin Philip Hepburn and whaling harpooner Charley Kinraid. As England wages war with France, press gangs roam the streets. When Charley is forcibly taken away to fight, he asks love-rival Philip to pass on a message to Sylvia, but his silence changes their lives forever. This haunting tale of love and loss is regarded as one of Gaskells finest works. Book excerpt: Set in a coastal English town during the early phases of the Napoleonic Wars in the 1790s, Sylvia's Lovers follows the complicated love life of a young woman. Sylvia Robson lives a very happy life with her parents on a farm. Her cousin, a kind but dull Quaker man named Philip, loves her dearly, but Sylvia's heart is captured by a handsome sailor named Charlie. As they grow closer, Charlie and Sylvia become secretly engaged. However, when Charlie is forced into enlisting in the Navy, he tells Philip, who witnesses the event, about their engagement and asks him to give Sylvia a message. Jealous and heartbroken, Philip decides not to tell Sylvia what happened. After a while, Sylvia assumes that Charlie's abrupt disappearance must mean that he had died. Filled with sorrow, Philip helps Sylvia through her mourning. Thankful for his support, Sylvia decides to marry Philip and together they have a daughter. They live a happy life together until the inevitable happens--Charlie returns. After hearing Charlie's story, Sylvia is enraged and rejects Philip, kicking him out of their house. He becomes desperate to redeem himself, though Sylvia is deeply hurt by the manipulation and betrayal, feeling unable to forgive him. However, as she reunites with Charlie, entertaining the idea of the two living their life together as planned, something feels off. Realizing that both she and Charlie have changed, Sylvia is conflicted as her choices each feel wrong in different ways. As the Napoleonic wars rage on, tensions grow as Sylvia tries to decide between her lovers. Featuring beautiful and dramatic prose, Sylvia's Lovers by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell is a powerful and moving piece of literature. Though it is lesser known than some of her other work, Gaskell's mastery shines through with the novel's incredible heart and interesting and authentic depictions of working-class characters. With themes of love and sacrifice, Sylvia's Lovers continues to reach even modern-day audiences. This edition of Sylvia's Lovers by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a striking new cover design. With these accommodations, modern audiences are provided a lavish and accessible reading experience.

Book excerpt: The novel begins in the 1790s in the coastal town of Monkshaven against the background of the practice of impressment during the early phases of the Napoleonic Wars. Sylvia Robson lives happily with her parents on a farm, and is passionately loved by her rather dull Quaker cousin Philip. She, however, meets and falls in love with Charlie Kinraid, a dashing sailor on a whaling vessel, and they become secretly engaged. When Kinraid goes back to his ship, he is forcibly enlisted in the Royal Navy by a press gang, a scene witnessed by Philip. Philip does not tell Sylvia of the incident nor relay to her Charlie's parting message and, believing her lover is dead, Sylvia eventually marries her cousin. This act is primarily prompted out of gratefulness for Philip's assistance during a difficult time following her father's imprisonment and subsequent execution for leading a revengeful raid on press-gang collaborators. They have a daughter. Inevitably, Kinraid returns to claim Sylvia and she discovers that Philip knew all the time that he was still alive. Philip leaves her in despair at her subsequent rage and rejection, but she refuses to live with Kinraid because of her child. Philip joins the army under a pseudonym, and ends up fighting in the Napoleonic wars, where he saves Kinraid's life. Kinraid returns to Britain, and marries. His wife, who knows nothing of their history together, informs Sylvia that her husband is a great military leader. Kinraid's marriage suggests to Sylvia that he was not as faithful to her as she had remained to him, and she then realizes she is actually in love with Philip. Philip, meanwhile horribly disfigured by a shipboard explosion, returns to the small Northumbrian village to try to secretly get a glimpse of his child. He ends up staying with the sister of a servant of Sylvia's deceased parents, and rescues his child when she nearly drowns. He is fatally injured while saving his daughter, but his identity then becomes known and he is reconciled with his wife on his deathbed.
