Book The Eastern Roman Empire under the Severans

Download or read book The Eastern Roman Empire under the Severans written by Julia Hoffmann-Salz and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year of the four emperors in AD 193 shows the cosmopolitan interconnectedness of the Roman Empire, yet scholarship has long framed the Severan dynasty in a narrative of descent stressing their North African and in particular their Syrian origins. The contributions of this volume question this conventional approach and instead examine more closely actual Severan policy in the Near East to detect potential local connections that determined this policy as well as how local communities and elites reacted to it. The volume thus explores new beginnings and old connections in the Roman Near East.

Book Numismatics and Greek Lexicography

Download or read book Numismatics and Greek Lexicography written by Michael P. Theophilos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael P. Theophilos explores the fascinating variety of numismatic contributions to Greek lexicography, pertaining to lexicographic studies of the Second Temple period in general, and the New Testament in particular. Theophilos considers previous scholarly attempts to grapple with, and incorporate, critical numismatic material into the emerging discipline of Greek lexicography - including foundational work by F. Preisigke and E. Kiessling - before outlining his own methodological approach. Theophilos' then examines the resources available for engaging with the numismatic material, and presents a series of specific case studies throughout the New Testament material. His carefully annotated images of coins draw readers in to a greater understanding of the material culture of the Greco-Roman world, and how this impacted upon the Greek language and the New Testament.

Book Coinage and Identity in the Roman Provinces

Download or read book Coinage and Identity in the Roman Provinces written by C. J. Howgego and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coins were the most deliberate of all symbols of public communal identities, yet the Roman historian will look in vain for any good introduction to, or systematic treatment of, the subject. Sixteen leading international scholars have sought to address this need by producing this authoritative collection of essays, which ranges over the whole Roman world from Britain to Egypt, from 200 BC to AD 300. The subject is approached through surveys of the broad geographical and chronological structure of the evidence, through chapters which focus on ways of expressing identity, and through regional studies which place the numismatic evidence in local context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers cistophoric issues of Pergamum, Ephesus, Tralles, Sardes-Synnada, Apameia, Laodiceia, KOP, and Aristonicus. The material, up to 1962, was collected by Noe and the rest has been supplemented by material that was inaccessible to him at the time, with the arrangement and text composed by Fred S. Kleiner. The book provides a brief history of the study of cistophoric coin, a catalogue of the coins, brief descriptions of the hoards, several tables and thirty-eight pages of black and white plates. This is THE reference work on this series of Greek coins. People have long been fascinated by the "snake in the basket" coinage - this is the die study of all the known examples up to the date of publication. The book contains a comprehensive Bibliography. An in-depth discussion of the coinage, its origin, use and the spirited discussion between early numismatists regarding whether this was festival coinage or actually trade coinage is presented. The real value of this book is the die study. This book allows a collector to confirm authenticity of coins found in the marketplace.

Book Ancient Indian Coins

Download or read book Ancient Indian Coins written by Osmund Bopearachchi and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important contribution about ancient coins in India has been written jointly by Osmund Bopearachchi and Wilfried Pieper. It is an impressive volume of 289 pages with 59 plates which presents a private collection of ancient coins patiently gathered trough the years. In Part one, W.Pieper develops a historical commentary about the earliest coinages of India, the imperial period of late Magadha and Maurya rule ( ca late IVth-early IInd centuries B.C.), Ujjain and Eran, the Satavahanas (ca Ist century B.C.-early IInd century A.D.), and tribal republics and kingdoms in post-Mauryan northern India ( ca 200 B.C-ca 300 A.D.). This commentary is followed by a detailed catalogue with very precise drawings of more than 600 coins and punch-marked coins. Part two by o. Bopearachhi is organized on the same pattern: a historical commentary about foreign powers in ancient northern India, from the Bactrian Greeks untill the time of the early Kushans followed by a precise catalogue presenting Greek, Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek, Indo-Scythian, Indo-Parthian, and early Kushan coins (in fact, more than 300 specimens). The commentary intends to give a general overview of the coins concerned and of their historical context with a more extensive discussion of the series best represented in the collection. For the indigenous Indian coins this is specially true for the coinages of Ujjain, Eran, Taxila and Kausambi, many of which are new and published here for the first time.

Book excerpt: [16:19:22] Jadles (Jamie): Early Japanese Coins is an up-to-date catalogue of pre-Meiji copper, gold and silver coins. As well as official issues, the often decorative provincial issues are covered. A selection of the intriguing Japanese amulets known as E-sen is also included. It replaces Munro and other western works. It is designed to be used both by advanced collectors who have some knowledge of characters, and beginners who will find the layout easy to follow and will quickly gain a knowledge of this coinage. It draws on historical, as well as the latest western and Japanese numismatic sources, and describes the circumstances under which many of the coins were issued and used. Guides to the Japanese language are given, and maps and lists of era names and rulers add to the background information. There is a description of how the coins were made, illustrated from a contemporary document. A Finding Guide is provided for the difficult Kanei Tsuho series, which will enable these coins to be readily attributed from the differences in their calligraphy. A rarity guide, linked to an approximate value, is provided for each coin. The author has been studying and collecting Far Eastern coins for over fifty years, and has also written the prize winning Cast Chinese Coins, and the definitive Qing Cash.
