Download or read book Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Roman provincial coins of Ionia Lydia and etc written by Oğuz Tekin and published by Ege Yayinlari. This book was released on 2012 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue is the tenth volume of the SNG Turkey Project and covers the Ionian and Lydian coins in the collection of Yavuz Tatis, a businessman and collector living in Izmir (ancient Smyrna). Majority of the coins were acquired from 1993 when Tatis started to form his collection and continued until 2010. It is inferred from the information given by vendors that the provenance of the coins was western Asia Minor in general. The catalogue presents 931 coins dating from Archaic to Roman Imperial period and the most represented ones are from Smyrna, Ephesus, Colophon, Phocaea, Magnesia ad Maeandrum, Miletus and Clazomenae in Ionia and Sardis, Philadelphia, Thyateira, Hypaipa and Magnesia ad Sipylum in Lydia. The unidentified coins are grouped under the title of "Uncertain Western Asia Minor" at the end of the catalogue. During the preparation of the catalogue, Arif Yaci, one of Tekin's doctoral students, helped from the beginning; he took the photographs of the coins and revised the catalogue as well. Besides, Michel Amandry, Sencan Altinoluk and Aliye Erol-Ozdizbay also revised the catalogue before going into press. Monograms were drawn by Armagan Tan, one of Tekin's Master's students.

Download or read book Numismatics and Greek Lexicography written by Michael P. Theophilos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael P. Theophilos explores the fascinating variety of numismatic contributions to Greek lexicography, pertaining to lexicographic studies of the Second Temple period in general, and the New Testament in particular. Theophilos considers previous scholarly attempts to grapple with, and incorporate, critical numismatic material into the emerging discipline of Greek lexicography - including foundational work by F. Preisigke and E. Kiessling - before outlining his own methodological approach. Theophilos' then examines the resources available for engaging with the numismatic material, and presents a series of specific case studies throughout the New Testament material. His carefully annotated images of coins draw readers in to a greater understanding of the material culture of the Greco-Roman world, and how this impacted upon the Greek language and the New Testament.

Book excerpt: This outstanding introductory survey collects, presents and examines, for the very first time, the portraits and representations of Alexander the Great on the ancient coins of the Greek and Roman period. From 320 BC to AD 400, Karsten Dahmen examines not only Alexander’s own coinage and the posthumous coinages of his successors, but also the re-use of his image by rulers from the Greek world and the Roman empire, to late antiquity. Also including numismatic material that exceeds all previous published works, and well-illustrated, this historical survey brings Alexander and his legacy to life.

The volume gathers together the most recent results of investigation in the field, and is the natural extension of recent work completed by a research group on Luwic dialects over a number of years. The standard reference for this series. Excellent plates!!! With The Early Cistophoric Coinage, Fred S. Kleiner completes nearly twenty years of work by Sydney P. Noe. The material, up to 1962, was collected by Noe and the rest has been supplemented by material that was inaccessible to him at the time, with the arrangement and text composed by Fred S. Kleiner. The book provides a brief history of the study of cistophoric coin, a catalogue of the coins, brief descriptions of the hoards, several tables and thirty-eight pages of black and white plates. This is THE reference work on this series of Greek coins. People have long been fascinated by the "snake in the basket" coinage - this is the die study of all the known examples up to the date of publication. The book contains a comprehensive Bibliography. An in-depth discussion of the coinage, its origin, use and the spirited discussion between early numismatists regarding whether this was festival coinage or actually trade coinage is presented. The real value of this book is the die study. This book allows a collector to confirm authenticity of coins found in the marketplace.

Download or read book Greek Colonisation written by G.R. Tsetskhladze and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2-volume handbook is dedicated to one of the most significant processes in the history of ancient Greece - colonisation. Greeks set up colonies and other settlements in new environments, establishing themselves in lands stretching from the Iberian Peninsula in the west to North Africa in the south and the Black Sea in the north east. In this colonial world Greek and local structures met, influenced and enriched each other. The handbook brings together historians and archaeologists, all world experts, to present the latest ideas and evidence. The principal aim is to present and update the general picture of this phenomenon, showing its importance in the history of the whole ancient world, including the Near East. The work is dedicated to Prof. A.J. Graham. This first volume gives a lengthy introduction to the problem, including methodological and theoretical issues. The chapters cover Mycenaean expansion, Phoenician and Phocaean colonisation, Greeks in the western Mediterranean, Syria, Egypt and southern Anatolia, etc. The volume is richly illustrated.
