Book The Pool Safety Resource

Download or read book The Pool Safety Resource written by Geoff Dawson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will help parents understand the unique risks of their own pool environment and how to build a robust system of protection. When the Roisum family moved to Florida in 2005 they decided to install a new pool in their back yard. Everyone was excited about the aquatic fun they would enjoy for years to come. It was just another day in March when Jenna, kissed her 2 year old son Mason goodbye as she left for work. Not long after, Mason found his way to the pool and drowned. Every year, hundreds of children and infants fall victim to accidental drowning accidents that are preventable with proper precautions. In The Pool Safety Resource, author and pool safety consultant Geoff Dawson guides parents and pool owners through the dangers and risks and helps them identify and make educated choices regarding swimming pools and other bodies of water. He offers realworld advice and solutions to help increase safety. He discusses understanding, evaluating, and mitigating risks; building layers of protection; constructing a safe, new pool; providing aquatic survival skills and swimming lessons; establishing and communicating pool rules; enjoying the pool safely; preparing for emergencies; being a pool safety advocate. Owning a pool is a huge responsibility, but the benefits to health, happiness, and family life are immeasurable. The Pool Safety Resource provides a wealth of information to help families enjoy their swimming pools safely.

Book The Little Book of Swimming Safely

Download or read book The Little Book of Swimming Safely written by Sue Gyford and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New to wild swimming and wondering how to stay safe? Old to wild swimming and wondering what's been accidentally left out of this book? Fed up of hearing about wild swimming but in need of a present that looks like you care about it? All welcome. After ten years of swimming in the sea in Scotland, Sue Gyford found herself on the admin teams of two online wild swimming groups amid what she lovingly calls "The Great Influx of 2020". Lockdown, cabin fever, the closure of swimming pools, and the inability to fly to Magaluf, saw huge numbers of people heading to beaches, rivers and lochs near home to swim. At the same time, wild swimmers could no longer swim in groups, so more experienced swimmers couldn't lead by example or pass on scraps of advice over their shivery bites. Eventually she decided that, rather than concocting ever-more baroque facebook posts about the dangers of cold water swimming and how to avoid them, she'd put it all in one place. A place where nobody could answer back in the comments. The Little Book of Swimming Safely is part advice, part warning, part saving her a hell of a lot of future facebook posts if everybody buys this for themselves or their pet swimmer. It doesn't pretend to be complete, she's probably missed out some obvious but important tips but she's publishing it herself, so this is her best shot. Keep safe, have fun, don't be stupid, be kind. That's about the size of it.

Book Saturday Is Swimming Day

Download or read book Saturday Is Swimming Day written by Hyewon Yum and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New things can be scary — but as one endearing little girl discovers, it’s perfectly fine to take your time. Swimming lessons are on Saturdays, and every Saturday one little girl has a stomachache. When she gets to the pool it’s loud, the floor is wet and slippery, and her swim cap is too tight. Her swimming instructor, Mary, says it’s OK to sit by the edge if she doesn’t want to get in the water this week. The next Saturday the girl has a stomachache again, but with Mary’s gentle encouragement, she eventually manages to make it into the pool to practice her kicks. Little by little, the girl’s confidence grows — until one Saturday comes around when she has no stomachache at all! In a charming and relatable story about trying something new, author-illustrator Hyewon Yum shows that sometimes a little bravery and a lot of patience are all you need to face your fear.

Book Shifting Currents

Download or read book Shifting Currents written by Karen Eva Carr and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deep dive into the history of aquatics that exposes centuries-old tensions of race, gender, and power at the root of many contemporary swimming controversies. Shifting Currents is an original and comprehensive history of swimming. It examines the tension that arose when non-swimming northerners met African and Southeast Asian swimmers. Using archaeological, textual, and art-historical sources, Karen Eva Carr shows how the water simultaneously attracted and repelled these northerners—swimming seemed uncanny, related to witchcraft and sin. Europeans used Africans’ and Native Americans’ swimming skills to justify enslaving them, but northerners also wanted to claim water’s power for themselves. They imagined that swimming would bring them health and demonstrate their scientific modernity. As Carr reveals, this unresolved tension still sexualizes women’s swimming and marginalizes Black and Indigenous swimmers today. Thus, the history of swimming offers a new lens through which to gain a clearer view of race, gender, and power on a centuries-long scale.

Book Pigs Can t Swim

Download or read book Pigs Can t Swim written by Helen Peppe and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outrageous, hilarious, and touching memoir by the youngest of nine children in a hardscrabble, beyond-eccentric Maine family. With everything happening on Helen Peppe's backwoods Maine farm, life was wild -- and not just for the animals. Sibling rivalry, rock-bottom poverty, feral male chauvinism, sex in the hayloft: everything seemed--and was -- out of control. In telling her wayward family tale, Peppe manages deadpan humor, an unerring eye for the absurd, and poignant compassion for her utterly overwhelmed parents. While her feisty resilience and candor will inevitably remind readers of Jeannette Walls or Mary Karr, Peppe's wry insight and moments of tenderness with family and animals are entirely her own. As Richard Hoffman, the author of Half the House: A Memoir puts it: "Pigs Can't Swim -- is an unruly, joyous troublemaker of a book."

Book excerpt: For fans of Small Spaces, Doll Bones, and Mary Downing Hahn, a truly chilling (and historically inspired) ghost story from the talented author of The Forgotten Girl. Celeste knows she should be excited to spend two weeks at her grandparents' lake house with her brother, Owen, and their cousins Capri and Daisy, but she's not. Bugs, bad cell reception, and the dark waters of the lake... no thanks. On top of that, she just failed her swim test and hates being in the water—it's terrifying. But her grandparents are strong believers in their family knowing how to swim, especially having grown up during a time of segregation at public pools. And soon strange things start happening—the sound of footsteps overhead late at night. A flickering light in the attic window. And Celete's cousins start accusing her of pranking them when she's been no where near them! Things at the old house only get spookier until one evening when Celeste looks in the steamy mirror after a shower and sees her face, but twisted, different... Who is the girl in the mirror? And what does she want? Past and present mingle in this spine-tingling ghost story by award-winning author India Hill Brown.
