Download or read book The Sweet Springs of Western Virginia written by Agnes Evans Gish and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Sweet Springs of Western Virginia: A Bittersweet Legacy, Dr. Gish leads readers on another early nineteenth-century stage journey, this time to the Sweet Springs of Monroe County, West Virginia. An outgrowth of her previous publication, Virginia Taverns, Ordinaries and Coffee Houses: 18th-Early 19th Century Houses of Entertainment Along the Buckingham Road, research on the Sweet Springs uncovered a story so compelling as to deserve a publication of its own. This story involves the original owners of the Springs, the Lewis family, as well as members of the Thomson family of South Carolina. The complex interplay between these two families during the economic "Panic of 1837" heightens the story of Dr. John Benjamin Lewis's struggle to save the Sweet Springs from total destruction. Dr. Gish holds degrees from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the University of Northern Colorado. In addition to Virginia Taverns, Ordinaries and Coffee Houses (Heritage Books, 2005), she has written numerous newspaper and periodical articles. Numerous photographs and a full name index add to the value of this work. G5005HB - $69.00

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern West Virginia possesses great natural beauty and a rich history in which lodging has played a significant role. This book traces the evolution of lodging in the area from the late 1700s to the present. The various types of accommodations included log cabins; lodging in rail, coal, and lumber communities; picturesque stagecoach stops; state parks; bed-and-breakfasts; and opulent mineral springs hotels. During the Civil War, many of the springs hotels and stagecoach stops were used for army hospitals and headquarters. This volume provides glimpses of quaint towns such as Bramwell, Fayetteville, Union, and Lewisburg, as well as the more commercial towns of Princeton, Bluefield, Hinton, Beckley, Glen Jean, Gary, Cass, Ronceverte, Marlinton, Coalwood, Rainelle, and Glen Rogers.

Book excerpt: "[...] In the county of Monroe, in one of the most beautiful valleys by nature in Western Virginia, seventeen miles southeast of the White Sulphur, are the Sweet Springs. The improvements here are extensive and comfortable, but not so handsome as some of the other watering-places. Dr. Bell, in his work on Baths and Mineral Waters, describes the medicinal properties of these waters as follows: "The water of the spring rises into a large cylindrical reservoir, from opposite sides of which it flows out by small pipes; one conveying water to the bath for the men, the other to that for the ladies. The men's bath is of a quadrangular form, surrounded by a wall, and open at the top. It is of tolerable[...]".
