Book Sweet Cakes Long Journey

Download or read book Sweet Cakes Long Journey written by Marie Rose Wong and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the turn of the twentieth century, and for decades thereafter, Oregon had the second largest Chinese population in the United States. In terms of geographical coverage, Portlands two Chinatowns (one an urban area of brick commercial structures, one a vegetable-gardening community of shanty dwellings) were the largest in all of North America. Marie Rose Wong chronicles the history of Portlands Chinatowns from their early beginnings in the 1850s until the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in the 1940s, drawing on exhaustive primary material from the National Archives, including more than six thousand individual immigration files, census manuscripts, letters, and newspaper accounts. She examines both the enforcement of Exclusion Laws in the United States and the means by which Chinese immigrants gained illegal entry into the country. The spatial and ethnic makeup of the combined "Old Chinatown" afforded much more contact and accommodation between Chinese and non-Chinese people than is usually assumed to have occurred in Portland, and than actually may have occurred elsewhere. Sweet Cakes, Long Journey explores the contributions that Oregons leaders and laws had on the development of Chinese American community life, and the role that the early Chinese immigrants played in determining their own community destiny and the development of their Chinatown in its urban form and vernacular architectural expression. Sweet Cakes, Long Journey is an original and notable addition to the history of Portland and to the field of Asian American studies.

Book Cincinnati Candy A Sweet History

Download or read book Cincinnati Candy A Sweet History written by Dann Woellert and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, Cincinnati's candy industry satisfied our national sweet tooth. Dive into its specialties and past. Stick and drop candies appeared here long before their Civil War popularity. Opera creams, rich fondant-filled chocolate candy brought here by Robert Hiner Putman, provided decadence. Candy corn, which the Goelitz Company introduced to the United States before World War I, remains a ubiquitous treat. Marpro Products created and popularized the marshmallow cone candy. Doscher invented the French Chew and made caramel corn a baseball concession at Redland Field decades before Cracker Jack became synonymous with our national pastime. The city's many Greek and Macedonian immigrants influenced the unique Queen City tradition of finishing a Cincinnati-style threeway of spaghetti, chili and cheddar with a chocolate mint. Local food etymologist Dann Woellert tells these stories and more in this delectably sweet history.

  • Author : Carolyn Finney
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2014-06-01
  • ISBN : 1469614499
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Black Faces White Spaces written by Carolyn Finney and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are African Americans so underrepresented when it comes to interest in nature, outdoor recreation, and environmentalism? In this thought-provoking study, Carolyn Finney looks beyond the discourse of the environmental justice movement to examine how the natural environment has been understood, commodified, and represented by both white and black Americans. Bridging the fields of environmental history, cultural studies, critical race studies, and geography, Finney argues that the legacies of slavery, Jim Crow, and racial violence have shaped cultural understandings of the "great outdoors" and determined who should and can have access to natural spaces. Drawing on a variety of sources from film, literature, and popular culture, and analyzing different historical moments, including the establishment of the Wilderness Act in 1964 and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Finney reveals the perceived and real ways in which nature and the environment are racialized in America. Looking toward the future, she also highlights the work of African Americans who are opening doors to greater participation in environmental and conservation concerns.

Luckily, she's got a plan for the future, which hinges on being hired for the lead sales job at a luxury housing development south of town. With a referral from her best friend Maggie, she's a shoo-in for the job. But there's one little snag... Parker Gray grew up knowing he’d work for his parents’ real estate firm in nearby Haven Shores. What he didn’t expect was that he'd be in constant competition with his older brother. Gretchen and Parker meet by chance and are instantly attracted to each other -- until they find out they're both after the same job. Who will win the coveted position? And when the dust settles, will they still want each other? Sweet Promises A promise between brothers. A secret that threatens to tear a budding romance apart. Maggie Price is resilient. She loves her life, but something feels like it’s missing... Jake Price promised his younger brother he’d take of his wife and child if something happened to him while deployed overseas. Now, five years after his brother’s death, Jake vows to fulfill that promise and take care of Maggie and her son Alex. Maggie tries to fight her attraction to Jake, but he knocks down her resistance and they fall in love. Will she still feel the same if she knows the real reason he’s in Candle Beach? Book excerpt: Start your days off right with taste-tempting delights from the author of Sweety Pies and Sweets: Soul Food Desserts and Memories. From donuts to crumb cakes to sweet rolls, this cookbook collects the kind of treats that evoke feelings of warmth and comfort like only good, old-fashioned breakfast food can. Author Patty Pinner has been collecting breakfast recipes for as long as she can remember. She comes from a long line of breakfast bakers, and many of the recipes in this book have been passed down from the “Greats” —great-grannies and -aunties—as well as cousins and other influential women in Pinner’s life. To pore through these recipes, and then to bake them at home, evokes in Pinner memories of the many women who created them. Pinner includes charming, often comical stories about her life and family throughout the cookbook. With generations-old recipes that range from the familiar (Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes) to the fun (Pineapple Upside Down Biscuits), Sweet Mornings is a reliable, well-tested addition to any kitchen. These recipes are ideal for slow weekend mornings and afternoons when you want to lure family and friends to the table with the intoxicating aroma of a homemade sweet treat baking in the oven. As the author’s mother used to say, the only thing that differentiates breakfast from dinner is the time of day. Where does it say you can’t have a little sugar in the morning? “Pinner shares these succulent sentiments amongst these pages from women who cooked meals that could make modern men cry . . . a delightful read that feels like home.” —Cuisine Noir
