Book excerpt: Sisters Sarah and Moira travel from Bombay to Stanton Station, a whistle-stop in the midst of the dry forests of the Deccan in India, where several generations of their family have settled. Since Granny Watkinson is dying of cancer, the girls are spending their Christmas holidays with Aunt Hilda and Uncle Cyril instead. Daddy arrives from Delhi; he brings news of unrest in the capital as India inches towards independence. Aunt Hilda oversees the preparation of meals in between sips of gin and lime, accompanied by a steady stream of gossip. Sarah revels in the atmosphere, and listens with rapt attention as old stories are recounted, ancient grudges explored, and family history comes alive once more. Mummy hates postings, and I see it in her weary smile and by the way she runs her fi ngers tiredly through her hair. I hate them too, although sometimes I fi nd the prospect of new places and fresh faces fascinating. Moira doesnt mind either way; so long as we all stay together, its okay with her. I chase after her, up and down the platform, dodging the many stalls, jumping on and off the huge platform scales. That is our life. Army brats, governed by the whims of HQ, our schooling constantly disrupted by postings.

Book Religion in the Secular Age

Download or read book Religion in the Secular Age written by Herta Nagl-Docekal and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be religious believers for people whose living conditions are defined by an increasingly secularized environment? Is the common distinction between faith and knowledge valid? The 21 essays cover approaches from various fields of the humanities. Some explore post-Kantian thoughts, discussing, i.a., American Pragmatism, M. Buber, M. Horkheimer, H. Putnam, J. Habermas, Ch. Taylor and variants of deconstruction, while other essays focus on ways in which the conflict between agnostics and seekers is addressed in US literary works, as in Fl. O’Connor, W. Percy, N. Hawthorne, J. Updike and in novels dealing with pandemics, for instance by L. Wright, E. M. Wiseman and R. Cook. Historical studies examine the intermingling of the sacred and the secular in the American South and neo-scholastic objections to modernity. Theological issues are being re-framed in essays discussing the relevance of pluralism, the relation of religious conviction and public opinion, the situation of scientists who believe and the thoughts of N. Frye and M. McLuhan. Finally, essays pay attention to religious aspects in works of art, e.g. in Ukrainian poetry, G. Mahler’s symphonies and in a TV show presenting new “American Gods” of globalization.

Book Hume and the Politics of Enlightenment

Download or read book Hume and the Politics of Enlightenment written by Thomas W. Merrill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Methinks I am like a man, who having narrowly escap'd shipwreck', David Hume writes in A Treatise of Human Nature, 'has yet the temerity to put out to sea in the same leaky weather-beaten vessel, and even carries his ambition so far as to think of compassing the globe'. With these words, Hume begins a memorable depiction of the crisis of philosophy and his turn to moral and political philosophy as the path forward. In this groundbreaking work, Thomas W. Merrill shows how Hume's turn is the core of his thought, linking Hume's metaphysical and philosophical crisis to the moral-political inquiries of his mature thought. Merrill shows how Hume's comparison of himself to Socrates in the introduction to the Treatise illuminates the dramatic structure and argument of the book as a whole, and he traces Hume's underappreciated argument about the political role of philosophy in the Essays.
