Book excerpt: This project examines the clay mineral bentonite, often referred to as the “clay of 1,000” uses. It pays particular attention to the bentonite that comes from Wyoming since it is considered the most valuable and also constitutes 70% of the world’s supply. This mineral is widely used because of its properties of hydration, swelling, water absorption, viscosity, and thixotropy. These properties have made it work well in a variety of applications: it is a flexible commodity. Because of its materiality and wide-ranging uses, it has seemed to occupy a place between organic and inorganic, a substance that, while mined, is also described as natural. This dissertation is divided into three chapters. Chapter One starts with Wyoming becoming a state in 1890 when the need to attract a higher population was bound with the boosterism of bentonite and other natural resources. I discuss newspaper reports of bentonite as something that could seemingly be used in everything and that promised to become even more useful in the future. I also look at the difficulty in defining the substance because of its wide-ranging materiality. Chapter Two is a look at the state identity of Wyoming in order to understand where bentonite exists in this narrative. This chapter begins with the early promotion of mining and moves to how the symbol of the cowboy was used to promote the state by the 1930s. It ends with a discussion of cat litter. Nearly all cat litter on the market today contains bentonite. Chapter Three considers the role bentonite plays in relation to issues of human health, investigating what drives people to drink it as part of a health regime. I connect a current practice of drinking bentonite to achieve health with attempts to control toxins that users link to a modern lifestyle. Ultimately, I argue that it is important to pay attention to the lesser known materials that play such a big part in our everyday lives (for the most part without our knowledge) because they do have effects. The position this substance occupies between organic and inorganic, natural and industrial is one that has allowed this seemingly flexible commodity to gain traction starting in Wyoming and reaching out to all of us.
