Book Fabry Disease

    Book Details:
  • Author : Deborah Elstein
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2010-08-02
  • ISBN : 9048190339
  • Pages : 525 pages

Download or read book Fabry Disease written by Deborah Elstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fabry disease is an X-linked inborn error of metabolism wherein deficiency of a lysosomal enzyme results in systemic deposition of glycosphingolipids. Storage deposition, and hence pathological disease, occurs preferentially in renal glomerular and tubular epithelial cells, myocardial cells, heart valve fibrocytes, neurons of dorsal root ganglia, and in endothelial smooth muscle cells of blood vessels. Thus, Fabry disease is a multi-system disorder, albeit with considerable phenotypic heterogeneity in onset and in severity; however, it is progressive, exhibits extensive morbidity, and is life-threatening. Within the past two decades, there has been a radical change in the natural course Fabry disease by virtue of the availability of specific enzyme replacement therapy. Moreover, there has been a concerted effort to better understand the underlying pathology and equally to identify patients prior to the onset of irreversible end-organ damage. It is to be hoped that the future for patients with Fabry disease can be viewed with greater, albeit guarded, optimism. This state-of-the-art textbook attempts to bridge the span of pre-clinical studies, clinical finding, and management options in a readable but comprehensive manner for the medical practitioner as well as the interested non-medical reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to continuous technical developments and new insights into the high complexity of neurological diseases, there is an increasing need for the application of proteomic technologies which can yield potential biomarker readouts for improved clinical management as well as for the development of new drugs by struggling pharmaceutical companies. This book describes the step-by-step use of proteomic methods such as two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, multiplex immunoassay, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and selective reaction monitoring MS, to increase our understanding of these diseases, with the ultimate aim of improving patient care. The volume will be of high interest to clinical scientists, physicians and pharmaceutical company scientists as it gives insights into the latest technologies enabling the revolution of personalized medicine. It is of direct interest to both technical and bench biomarker scientists as it gives step by step instructions on how to carry out each of the protocols. It is also of interest to researchers as each technique will be presented in the context of a specific neurological disorder, including Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Finally, it will also highlight the future research efforts in this field, which are endeavoring to convert proteomic platforms to the form of hand held devices which can be used in a point of care setting and return diagnostic results within the timeframe of a visit to the general practitioner.

Book Quantitative Methods in Proteomics

Download or read book Quantitative Methods in Proteomics written by Katrin Marcus and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protein modifications and changes made to them, as well as the quantities of expressed proteins, can define the various functional stages of the cell. Accordingly, perturbations can lead to various diseases and disorders. As a result, it has become paramount to be able to detect and monitor post-translational modifications and to measure the abundance of proteins within the cell with extreme sensitivity. While protein identification is an almost routine requirement nowadays, reliable techniques for quantifying unmodified proteins (including those that escape detection under standard conditions, such as protein isoforms and membrane proteins) is not routine. Quantitative Methods in Proteomics gives a detailed survey of topics and methods on the principles underlying modern protein analysis, from statistical issues when planning proteomics experiments, to gel-based and mass spectrometry-based applications. The quantification of post-translational modifications is also addressed, followed by the “hot” topics of software and data analysis, as well as various overview chapters which provide a comprehensive overview of existing methods in quantitative proteomics. Written in the successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and notes on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and easily accessible, Quantitative Methods in Proteomics serves as a comprehensive and competent overview of the important and still growing field of quantitative proteomics.

Book Structure and Design

Download or read book Structure and Design written by G. G. Schierle and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-25 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structures support load and are essential to define form and space. To design structures in synergy with form and space requires creativity and informed intuition of structural principles. The objective of Structure and Design is to introduce structural principles as the foundation of creative design and demonstrate successful application through many case studies. Using rich illustrations, Structure and Design clarifies complex concepts without calculus and provides greater insight for readers with mathematics background. It includes details in wood, steel, concrete, masonry, and fabric and contains graphs that streamline complex tasks, such as column buckling and design for wind and seismic forces. Structure and Design is a reference book for design studios, architects, civil engineers, and builders and an excellent text for courses relating to those fields. G G Schierle holds Ph.D. and master of architecture degrees from the University of California, Berkeley and a Dipl-Ing degree from Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences. He teaches structures and design at the University of Southern California and has also taught at University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford University. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, recipient of the Creative Achievement Award of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, founding director of University of Southern California's master of building science program, and a professional architect.
