The town has many canals and has been called the Venice of the East. An older romanisation was "Soochow". Suzhou is a prefecture-level city in the Chinese system of administration, which makes the name "Suzhou" somewhat ambiguous; it can refer either to the city or to the entire administrative area. Suzhou has always been a major center of Wu culture which developed in the region around Lake Tai. The area was settled much earlier, but the city walls that defined what we now know as Suzhou were built in the late 6th century BCE. By 100 CE Suzhou was one of the ten largest cities on Earth, and by the early 19th century it was the world's largest non-capital city. One of the major concerns of Indian parents is how best to pass on to their children the time-honoured traditions of Indian culture and spirituality, even as they try to raise global citizens. Visa, Stickers and Other Matters of the Soul is a delightful and endearing account of a young mother's experiments with raising her daughter in the Indian spiritual way while living in atheist China. Download or read book World Philology written by Sheldon Pollock and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philology—the discipline of making sense of texts—is enjoying a renaissance within academia after decades of neglect. World Philology charts the evolution of philology across the many cultures and historical time periods in which it has been practiced, and demonstrates how this branch of knowledge, like philosophy and mathematics, is an essential component of human understanding. Every civilization has developed ways of interpreting the texts that it produces, and differences of philological practice are as instructive as the similarities. We owe our idea of a textual edition for example, to the third-century BCE scholars of the Alexandrian Library. Rabbinical philology created an innovation in hermeneutics by shifting focus from how the Bible commands to what it commands. Philologists in Song China and Tokugawa Japan produced startling insights into the nature of linguistic signs. In the early modern period, new kinds of philology arose in Europe but also among Indian, Chinese, and Japanese commentators, Persian editors, and Ottoman educationalists who began to interpret texts in ways that had little historical precedent. They made judgments about the integrity and consistency of texts, decided how to create critical editions, and determined what it actually means to read. Covering a wide range of cultures—Greek, Roman, Hebrew, Arabic, Sanskrit, Chinese, Indo-Persian, Japanese, Ottoman, and modern European—World Philology lays the groundwork for a new scholarly discipline.

Book The Birth of Now

  • Author : Jamie Cawley
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2016-04-20
  • ISBN : 1785891227

Download or read book The Birth of Now written by Jamie Cawley and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1870, more than 4,000 years after it was built, the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt was still the world's tallest man-made structure. By 2010, only 140 years later, there were more than 10,000 buildings taller than the Great Pyramid. This book is about what caused this change and what will change next. Why did change take so long to happen? Why did it start in North West Europe? The Birth of Nowlooks at what made the Industrial Revolution – and the financial, transport, agricultural and political revolutions – all happen at the same time. Previous ideas are reviewed – empire, geography, politics, coal or inventions – with remarkable new findings, until the 'smoking gun' is found and we know what started it all, what triggered the Birth of Now. Once it started, we see the astonishing rate of transformation in the Victorian age and, in the last part of the book, see how our view of the future is changed. The Birth of Now follows Jamie Cawley's previous break-through book, Beliefs, in transforming our understanding of the world. This book will allow readers to see the world in a new way, that will make them think and understand better what happened then and what is happening now. Ideal for anyone looking for a new perspective on the modern world, The Birth of Now is a fascinating read that will appeal to those interested in 20th century history.

Book Central Asia and the Silk Road

Download or read book Central Asia and the Silk Road written by Stephan Barisitz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the pre-modern economic history of Central Asia and the Silk Road, covering several millennia. By analyzing an abundance of sources and materials, it illustrates the repeated economic heydays of the Silk Road, during which it linked the Orient and Occident for many centuries. Nomadic steppe empires frequently dominated Central Asia, molded its economy and influenced trade along the Silk Road. The book assesses the causes and effects of the wide-ranging overland trade booms, while also discussing various internal and external factors that led to the gradual economic decline of Central Asia and eventual demise of the Silk Road. Lastly, it explains how the economic decline gave rise to Chinese and Russian colonialism in the 18th and 19th centuries. Detailed information, e.g. on the Silk Road’s trajectories in various epochs, is offered in the form of numerous newly drafted maps.

Book Manhua Modernity

  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2020-12-25

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. From fashion sketches of smartly dressed Shanghai dandies in the 1920s, to multipanel drawings of refugee urbanites during the war against Japan, to panoramic pictures of anti-American propaganda rallies in the early 1950s, the polymorphic cartoon-style art known as manhua helped define China's modern experience. Manhua Modernity offers a richly illustrated, deeply contextualized analysis of these illustrations across the lively pages of popular pictorial magazines that entertained, informed, and mobilized a nation through a half century of political and cultural transformation. In this compelling media history, John Crespi argues that manhua must be understood in the context of the pictorial magazines that hosted them, and in turn these magazines must be seen as important mediators of the modern urban experience. Even as times changed—from interwar-era consumerism to war-time mobilization to Mao-style propaganda—the art form adapted to stay on the cutting edge of both politics and style.

Book The Invention of China in Early Modern England

Download or read book The Invention of China in Early Modern England written by Jonathan E. Lux and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invention of China in Early Modern England describes how several different English communities became aware of China. It begins by describing how early modern intellectuals used the utopian ideal of China to license all kinds of progressive innovation before chronicling how England’s growing commerce in southeast Asia radically changed China’s representation in the English discourse community. For the new community of English merchants proposing to trade in Chinese goods, China became the seminal example in the growing discourse community of English Orientalism. It was an absolute or arbitrary authoritarian state, associated with crooked business dealings, and cloaked in a rhetoric of secrecy and exclusion—a dangerous exception to the traditions, values, and identities of the emergent English speaking states. Finally, the book points out some of the ways that contemporary English language sources continue to represent this early modern English thought tradition, labelling the complexities of modern China with analytical vocabulary perhaps better suited to the pressing political anxieties of the seventeenth century.

Nearly five hundred years later, the seventeenth-century nuns Baochi and Zukui added their own commentaries to the collection.
