Book excerpt: The result of a deliberative process guided by careful attention to spatial relationships, Suzan Frecon’s large-scale oil paintings are composed of asymmetrical curves that result in minor and major measured areas of color. Accompanying the artist’s solo exhibitions at David Zwirner, New York and London, in 2017, this publication features a selection of new monumental paintings carefully reproduced both as individual works and in installation views to best convey the experience of seeing the work. Book excerpt: From functional installations to discrete objects, Jim Isermann has chronicled the conflation of postwar industrial design and fine art through popular culture A comprehensive monograph spanning the 40-year career of Palm Springs-based artist Jim Isermann (born 1955), this title shows the artist's first 20 years of extensive, chronological research of postwar art and design filtered through popular culture and consumerism, followed by 20 years of site-specific public projects and a studio practice of labor-intensive painting, sculpture and the occasional product design project. In 1980, there were no guidebooks to California design or what we now call Midcentury Modern. Isermann constructed his own timeline, object by object, from thrift stores, flea markets and swap meets, making bodies of work that included latch hook rugs paired with painting, stained glass window panels and handsewn fabric wall hangings. By 1999, Isermann had his first computer, and so began the second 20 years of his career, with complex digitally designed patterns that found their form in commercially manufactured modules. Isermann continues to be inspired by the unpredictable, serendipitous moments that breathe life into his work.

As early as 1967, LeWitt had started making cut, folded and torn works, which he intended would always sell for $100. "His wall drawings were already selling for thousands of dollars, so he wanted to have some artwork that everybody could buy," notes Jason Rulnick. This body of work consists of over 800 folded, torn and cut paper works, including cut maps, reproductions, and manipulated silver gelatin photographs. Thanks to extensive research throughout various private and public collections around the world, this volume includes over 100 color plates, along with an index/description of all 870 known works, information that has been made available through the artist's day books and journals uncovered (in the studio) by Veronica Roberts. Carrie Moyer consciously centers her painting as a practice about painting, with history as a subtext. Known for her incursions into Color Field painting, Moyer also traces her influences to iconic female artists of the twentieth century, such as Georgia O’Keeffe, and surrounding questions of taste, once quipping of her paintings that “[Helen] Frankenthaler and [Fernand] Léger met in a dark corner and had Elizabeth Murray.” Moyer’s complex work merges abstract aesthetics and legible imagery: vividly colored and textured forms are embedded with a range of historical, stylistic, and physical references to Surrealism, Modernism, 1960s and ’70s counterculture graphics, and ’70s feminist art. Moyer often works on the floor, pouring, rolling, stippling, mopping the paint, and embellishing with glitter. An exploration of acrylic’s unique properties is a driving force in her work. Beginning as an intern at HERESIES, the pioneering feminist art magazine, Moyer has also engaged in critical practices beyond the studio. This monograph enriches a deep dive into Moyer’s painting practice, in particular her work of the past decade, with a portfolio of the artist’s agitprop from the 1990s, including Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!), one of the first lesbian public art projects.

Book excerpt: Gary Hume (b. 1962) is renowned for paintings distinguished by a bright palette, reduced imagery, and flat areas of seductive color. While Hume's paintings have always emphasized their luscious surfaces and simplified forms, many are infused with a melancholic beauty. Hume first received critical acclaim with a body of work known as the "Door" paintings. These minimal and abstract works, with their high-gloss paint and insistent reflective surfaces, developed in the early 1990s into a broader set of motifs, such as the nude, the portrait, the garden, as well as a pictorial idiom drawn from childhood, with images of polar bears, snowmen, rabbits, owls and close-up faces. His subject matter broadened yet more through the mid 1990s to incorporate images from popular culture, making portraits of celebrity figures such as Kate Moss, British radio DJ Tony Blackburn, and actress Patsy Kensit. For the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1999), he produced the "Water Paintings," large-scale works of multiple, overlapping line drawings of nudes punctuated by flat areas of color. "Cave Paintings," the title of his most recent show at White Cube, featured seven marble tableaux composed of a variety of different stones set against each other in collaged sections that appear like tectonic plates. These are held together by a lead tracery that provides the edge to the expanses of color, traced by the natural faults and veins inherent in the stone itself. These monolithic compositions are hand-carved and richly decadent, combining visual motifs from the natural world with imagery suggestive of human birth and fundamental emotions. Gary Hume was born in Kent in 1962 and lives and works in London and upstate New York. Solo shows include S�o Paulo Bienal (1996), Venice Biennale (1999) Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1999), the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh (1999), Funda��o La Caixa, Barcelona (2000), Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2003), Kunsthaus Bregenz (2004) and the Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover (2004). Group shows include Tate Britain, London (2004), Louisiana Museum, Denmark (2004), Kunsthalle Basel (2002), and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2001).
