Book excerpt: Sutton was born among fertile hilltops and well-watered valleys of the Nipmuc country, where, in the early 1700s, a group of London proprietors established a new foothold in America. In the wake of Indian wars, English farmers built a town on their guns, plows, and Congregational sensibilities, a place echoed today through the images in Sutton. No Massachusetts town sent more of its native sons to fight for independence, and Sutton secured that liberty through hard work. French Canadian workers built the mill villages of Manchaug and Wilkinsonville and turned out cloth, hats, and shuttles. Sutton raised prize-winning cattle and grew the Sutton Beauty apple. As the twentieth century brought growth, Sutton blended highways and subdivisions with eighteenth-century homes, farms, and a working blacksmith shop.

Molly's new life is full of contentment, if a bit short on excitement. But then a girl goes missing...and Molly's world gets turned upside down. Truth be told, no one in the village feels safe. They struggle to believe such darkness could exist in a friendly village, where people spend most of their time thinking about nothing more frightening than what to have for lunch. And when the missing girl's distraught parents come to stay at Molly's bed and breakfast, she is drawn into the case, like it or not. Will Molly and the French detective figure out what happened to Amy Bennett before someone else disappears?

Book excerpt: Helvetia: A Swiss Village in the Hills of West Virginia explores the unique founding and development of a community nestled within the wilderness of Appalachia. Established in 1869, this tiny Swiss settlement embodies the American immigrant experience, reflecting the steadfast desire of settlers to preserve cultural traditions and values while adapting to new and extraordinary surroundings. From ramp suppers to carnivals, traditional architecture, folk music, and cheese making, this book documents a living community by exploring the ethnic customs, farming practices, community organization, and language maintenance of Helvetia residents. Drawing upon a diverse body of resources such as Swiss and American archival documents and local oral accounts, this chronicledepicts the everyday social and economic life of this village during the past two centuries. Helvetia celebrates a small community where residents and visitors alike continue to practice a Swiss American culture that binds an international history to a local heritage. Long out of print, this reissued edition of the history of Helvetia contains a new introduction, a concise index, a bibliography, an appendix of foreign-born immigrants, and an exquisite photographic essay featuring archival images of a Swiss village still thriving within the isolated backcountry of central West Virginia.
