Book Pictorial History Sutherland Shire

Download or read book Pictorial History Sutherland Shire written by Pauline Curby and published by Kingsclear Books Pty Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictorial History Sutherland Shireby Pauline Curby is a new book in the famous series of pictorial histories which cover the suburbs of Sydney. The Shire is a beautiful and distinctive part of Sydney, surrounded by waterways and beaches. People have lived here in splendid isolation fishing, swimming, sailing, boating and surfing. From the Dharawal people to the wealthy white landowners the beauty and plentitude the land has offered has been Sydney¿s secret. Wildflowers abounded and tall timber was cut to make way for small market gardens and dairies. Until the 1960s you could still buy fresh goats milk and honey over your fence and people were walking down to their local weir, creek or river to swim. Cronulla was the jewel in the crown of the Shire. Its scenic setting and access by train, tram or car to the beaches and Port Hacking was a drawcard for holidaymakers from the city and the St George district particularly after the building of the Tom Uglys Bridge. Como opened to crowds of tourists with the opening of the train line and pleasure grounds abounded on the Georges and Port Hacking Rivers and people came to see the new National Park. Taren Point Bridge opened the way for further suburban growth and today Sutherland Shire is one of the biggest local government areas in Sydney. Illustrated with 200 historic black and white photographs this lovely book describes the development and maturing of the Shire from its earliest white settlement through to the extensive settlement we know today.

Download or read book The Tea Ladies of St Jude s Hospital written by Joanna Nell and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heartwarming and hilarious bestseller by the author of treasured novels, The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village and The Great Escape from Woodlands Nursing Home The Marjorie Marshall Memorial Cafeteria has been serving refreshments and raising money at the hospital for over fifty years, long after anybody can remember who Marjorie Marshall actually was. Staffed by successive generations of dedicated volunteers, the beloved cafeteria is known as much for offering a kind word and sympathetic ear (and often unsolicited life advice) as for its tea and buns. Stalwart Hilary has worked her way up through the ranks to Manageress; Joy has been late every day since she started as the cafeteria's newest recruit. She doesn't take her role as 'the intern' quite as seriously as Hilary would like but there's no doubt she brings a welcome pop of personality. Seventeen-year-old Chloe, the daughter of two successful surgeons, is volunteering during the school holidays because her mother thinks it will look good on her CV. Chloe is at first bewildered by the two older women but soon realises they have a lot in common, not least that each bears a secret pain. When they discover the cafeteria is under threat of closure, this unlikely trio must band together to save it. 'Takes readers on a sweet journey. A warm-hearted read from Nell, who tells engaging stories with older protagonists' The Australian 'The Tea Ladies is a delight. Warm characters and observations and great pace' AMANDA HAMPSON 'Another funny, warm-hearted read' Herald Sun **Contains BONUS EXTRACT from Joanna Nell's novel Mrs Winterbottom Takes a Gap Year** Praise for the novels of Joanna Nell: 'Tender and funny' Woman's Weekly 'Whip-smart dialogue, humour and sarcasm ... highly addictive' Sun Herald 'Lively and whimsical' Sydney Morning Herald

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to allow interested community members to gain an understanding of the historically important role postal services made to contemporary Australia. Specific attention is given to the appreciation of the beautiful architectural styles of the historically significant postal buildings and red pillar post boxes that are still available to be viewed. In a similar format to our first book ‘Discovering Australia’s historical milemarkers and boundary stones’, this book begins with a brief history of Australia’s postal services dating from the establishment of the first post office in 1809 up to the present day. Information on significant communication strategies such as the Cobb & Co. mail service and the Overland Telegraph Line (OTL) are included. Information is provided on the biographies of some important contributors to the Australian postal services. The following chapters, organised state by state from Queensland to the Northern Territory, describe a sample of post offices and red pillar post boxes. Finally, some interesting postal items are described with references providing links for further reading.
