Book Sustainable Design Through Jute Fiber Composite

Download or read book Sustainable Design Through Jute Fiber Composite written by Cristiano Alves and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, the world faces unprecedented challenges in social, environmental and economic dimensions. In particular, the automotive industry confronts a moment of crises, and based on the ecodesign it has been transforming the challenges in opportunities. In this context, the use of natural fibers has presented several advantages to design "greener" automotive components. Thus, this work presents an integrated approach to introduce environmental concerns in SMEs, based on natural composite materials. Jute fibers were investigated to replace glass fibers as reinforcement to produce structural composites. The surfaces of the jute fibers were modified by treatments, improving their wetting behaviour and the mechanical properties of the composites. The characterization of the composites was obtained different tests and methods. Through an automotive case study, the results show the importance of the environmental parameters for the project. They demonstrated the advantages of replacing glass fiber for jute fiber composites to produce the enclosures of the Buggy case study, corroborating with the Triple Bottom Line concept.

Book Processing of Jute Fiber Reinforced Green Composites

Download or read book Processing of Jute Fiber Reinforced Green Composites written by Dewan Mohammad and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthetic fibers are generally used to make composite materials for their better mechanical and thermal properties. However, they are expensive and non-biodegradable. Alternatively, natural fibers are inexpensive, biodegradable, easily available in nature and have good mechanical, and thermal. Among all natural fibers, jute fibers are easily available in fabric and fiber forms with good mechanical and thermal properties. Therefore, jute-based composite materials can be used in consumer goods, low-cost housing, cars, and civil structures. Jute fibers are chemically treated to improve fiber/matrix interface adhesion and moisture induced degradation. Biodegradable composites are manufactured using jute fabrics, biodegradable polymer and with/without nanoclay using the compression molding process. The effects of surface treatment and nanoclay on the jute based composites were characterized by thermal, mechanical, and physical analyses. Surface treated jute fiber reinforced composites showed better performances compared to untreated fiber reinforced composites. Nanoclay infused composites showed better thermal, mechanical, and physical properties compared to conventional composites.
