The persistently growing use of external nutrients has enormously raised the cost of farming thus turning agriculture into an unremunerative occupation. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers has also been causing long-term hazards to soil fertility and intensifying the need of subsidy on domestic and imported fertilizers. All these hinder sustainable growth of agriculture. The study also shows that prices of inputs , which farmers have been using, have increased at a much faster rate than those of agriculture output causing impoverishment, in real sense, among them and making agriculture an occupation of last resort.

In order to address this question, this book proposes a set of recommendations that should be implemented on a priority basis. These recommendations are as follows: (i) make public programs much more focused and effective; (ii) recognize water as a critical, long-term constraint to India's agricultural growth and give top priority to significantly improving the efficiency of water use; (iii) promote new high-yield seeds and related technologies, including mechanization, to improve yields and productivity; (iv) improve the effectiveness of agricultural research and extension; (v) support further improvements of the farm-to-market value chain and reduce spoilage; and (vi) improve markets and incentives related to agriculture through reforms of prices, trade, and subsidies. The vision of what India's economy in 2040 should and can look like, with an affluent and modern agricultural sector, will require fundamental changes in both the demand and supply sides of Indian agriculture. The vision is based not on projections but on how India's agricultural sector needs to adapt to match the economy's progress as a whole. This vision is plausible but it is by no means certain.

Worldwide, it has been reported various benefits and prospects in adopting CA technologies in different agro-climatic conditions. Yet, CA in arid and semi-arid regions of India and parts of south Asia raises uncertainities due to its extreme climates, large scale residue burning, soil erosion and other constraints such as low water holding capacity, high potential evapotranspiration, etc . Thus, the proposed book has 30 chapters addressing all issues relevant to conservation agriculture/no-till farming system. The book also gives further strengthening existing knowledge in relation to soil physical, chemical and biological processes and health within close proximity of CA as well as machinery requirements. Moreover, the information on carbon (C) sequestration, C credits, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, mitigation of climate change effects and socio-economic view on CA under diverse ecologies namely rainfed, irrigated and hill eco-region is also deliberated. For large scale adoption of CA practices in South Asian region especially in India and other countries need dissemination of best-bet CA technologies for dominant soil types/cropping systems through participatory mode, strong linkages and institutional mechanism and public-private-policy support. Phase one, immediately after independence, witnessed several institutional changes through land reforms and the initiation of major irrigation projects. The second phase, since the mid-1960s, aimed to increase agricultural productivity to attain self-sufficiency in foodgrains through technological revolution and government support for credit, marketing, and extension services. This was followed by the current phase, since the late 1980s, which makes agriculture more market-oriented. The agricultural sector occupies a key position in the Indian economy. It provides employment to about 65% of the working population of India. Unfortunately, India's economy has witnessed a loss of dynamism in the agriculture and allied sectors in recent years. The sector, as a whole, has showed poor performance in the recent years. The government has launched programs to rejuvenate agriculture and improve farm income. Accelerating the growth rate of agricultural production is seen as central to a more inclusive growth. This book traces developments in Indian agriculture during the post-Independence period.
