Book excerpt: Located among the beautiful rolling hills of Sussex County, the rural farmland of Wantage Township has been providing fruits of nature since before the Revolutionary War. The town of Sussex (formerly Deckertown) was a significant milk-shipping center that has long provided fresh agricultural products to the nearby cities. Set between the Kittatinny Ridge and the Hamburg Mountains, Wantage was settled in the early 1700s and incorporated as a township in May 1754. The township contained many hamlets, including Beemerville, Libertyville, Mount Salem, Colesville, and, until October 14, 1891, the village of Deckertown, which officially became Sussex Borough on March 2, 1902. As the area grew and developed busy main streets with stores and railroad stations, agriculture and livestock farms thrived--even producing famed horse Goldsmith Maid, known as the "Queen of the Trotters." Family roots have always run deep in these communities, and some notable family names include Decker, Kilpatrick, Cortwright, Beemer, Von Bunschooten, and Kanouse. Today, Sussex and Wantage continue to boast the rural traditions that have attracted families for decades.

Book excerpt: The town of Millinocket rests at the junction where the West Branch of the Penobscot River and the Millinocket Stream converge. In 1898, settlers arrived in the area and carved a town out of the wilderness, constructing the Great Northern Paper Company, the largest paper mill in the world at that time. Utilizing the waterways, lumbermen floated the logs downriver to feed the mill and export paper around the globe. The town and mill sprang up practically overnight, built at a fevered pace to keep up with the paper demand, and gave Millinocket the nickname "Magic City in Maine's Wilderness." Today Millinocket is the closest town to the famous Baxter State Park and Maine's highest peak, Mount Katahdin. As the gateway to the Allagash region, Millinocket draws tourists year-round with its numerous outdoor activities.

Book excerpt: Here is the oh-so-hilarious and adorable story of a blended family-- using just a few words in various configurations-- from the pets' point-of-view! Cat and Dog live with their human in a suburban house with a big backyard. Sure, they fight like.... well, cats and dogs, but they're used to one another. Dog-- a different dog-- lives a happy only child life in the city with his dad. He has the bed to himself, he never has to share his toys, and that's the way he likes it. So what happens when the Dog's dad and Cat and Dog's mom move in together? Well, it's chaotic. There's not enough room on the bed, for starters. But as the seasons pass, the three animals become a trio and learn to (mostly) love one another. Just as they're settling into a cozy life as a threesome, along comes..... a baby! This laugh-out-loud picture book, which is the recipient of The Irma Simonton Black and James H. Black Award for Excellence in Children’s Literature, cleverly uses two repeating words and is sure to strike a chord with kids dealing with the ups-and-downs of settling into a blended family of their own.

  • Author : Tara Whitsitt
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2017-09-19
  • ISBN : 1632867907
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Fermentation on Wheels written by Tara Whitsitt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightening and delicious road adventure/cookbook from the young woman the New York Times dubbed "the Johnny Appleseed of Pickling." Three years ago, food activist Tara Whitsitt had a dream: to take to the road in a converted school bus and spread the gospel of kombucha, kimchi, and kefir nationwide. She would bring her microbe-dense delicacies, her expertise, and her generosity to food communities across the country. Her motto: Tasty food belongs to everyone. In a 1986 International Harvester bus-turned-fermentation-lab, Tara took off from Eugene, Oregon, teaching her skills to curious attendees, hosting potlucks, and sampling the seasonal produce of each stop on her tour. The project accrued a following, and she gave it a name: Fermentation on Wheels. Through her winning stories, illustrations, photographs, and fifty recipes, Fermentation on Wheels tracks the two-year. twenty-thousand mile journey that made Tara into a known apostle of outrageously delicious, creative, healthy, and sustainable fermented flavors--from sourdough to sauerkraut to wild berry wines. A practical and delectable cookbook, Fermentation on Wheels is also an inspiring celebration of how food traditions (and starter cultures) can bring people together, pollinate their minds, and change their lives for the better.
