Book excerpt: Attorney Gail Connor is out to save a wrongly convicted man from execution in this “thought-provoking mystery” from the New York Times–bestselling author (Publishers Weekly). No one in the quiet coastal town of Stuart, Florida, can forget what happened twelve years ago. Notorious local Kenny Ray Clark brutally murdered a young wife and mother, and was righteously sentenced to death for the crime. But Kenny’s grandmother, Gail’s former housekeeper, won’t believe it. So she goes to the only person who can help get her grandson off death row. It doesn’t take Gail—or her fiancé, fellow attorney Anthony Quintana—long to see that the entire case was built on quicksand. The problem is that there are some very powerful people who don’t want Kenny to go free. They want to keep the past buried. And if Gail doesn’t watch her step, they’ll bury her right along with it. This sixth in the bestselling Suspicion series, authored by an Edgar Award finalist and former Florida state prosecutor, guarantees that “once readers are pulled in by the intricate plot . . . they won’t want to skip a word” (Publishers Weekly). Book Angel of Vengeance

Download or read book Angel of Vengeance written by Ana Siljak and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Russian winter of 1878 a shy, aristocratic young woman named Vera Zasulich walked into the office of the governor of St. Petersburg, pulled a revolver from underneath her shawl, and shot General Fedor Trepov point blank. "Revenge!," she cried, for the governor's brutal treatment of a political prisoner. Her trial for murder later that year became Russia's "trial of the century," closely followed by people all across Europe and America. On the day of the trial, huge crowds packed the courtroom. The cream of Russian society, attired in the finery of the day, arrived to witness the theatrical testimony and deliberations in the case of the young angel of vengeance. After the trial, Vera became a celebrated martyr for all social classes in Russia and became the public face of a burgeoning revolutionary fervor. Dostoyevsky (who attended the trial), Turgenev, Engels, and even Oscar Wilde all wrote about her extraordinary case. Her astonishing acquittal was celebrated across Europe, crowds filled the streets and the decision marked the changing face of Russia. After fleeing to Switzerland, Vera Zasulich became Russia's most famous "terroristka," inspiring a whole generation of Russian and European revolutionaries to embrace violence and martyrdom. Her influence led to a series of acts that collectively became part of "the age of assassinations." In the now-forgotten story of Russia's most notorious terrorist, Ana Siljak captures Vera's extraordinary life story--from privileged child of nobility to revolutionary conspirator, from assassin to martyr to socialist icon and saint-- while colorfully evoking the drama of one of the world's most closely watched trials and a Russia where political celebrities held sway.

Book The Culture of Vengeance and the Fate of American Justice

Download or read book The Culture of Vengeance and the Fate of American Justice written by Terry K. Aladjem and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-14 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is driven by vengeance in Terry Aladjem's provocative account – a reactive, public anger that is a threat to democratic justice itself. From the return of the death penalty to the wars on terror and in Iraq, Americans demand retribution and moral certainty; they assert the 'rights of victims' and make pronouncements against 'evil'. Yet for Aladjem this dangerously authoritarian turn has its origins in the tradition of liberal justice itself – in theories of punishment that justify inflicting pain and in the punitive practices that result. Exploring vengeance as the defining problem of our time, Aladjem returns to the theories of Locke, Hegel and Mill. He engages the ancient Greeks, Nietzsche, Paine and Foucault to challenge liberal assumptions about punishment. He interrogates American law, capital punishment and images of justice in the media. He envisions a democratic justice that is better able to contain its vengeance.

Book Reframing the Masters of Suspicion

Download or read book Reframing the Masters of Suspicion written by Andrew Dole and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits Paul Ricoeur's classification of Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud as the “masters of suspicion”, and provides a thought-provoking critique for critical religious studies scholars, as well as anyone working in critical theory more broadly. Whereas Ricoeur saw suspicion as a mode of interpretation, Andrew Dole argues that the method common to his “masters” is better understood as a mode of explanation. Dole replaces Ricoeur's hermeneutics of suspicion with suspicious explanation, which claims the existence of hidden phenomena that are bad in some recognizable way. Each of the masters, Dole argues, offered a distinct kind of suspicious explanation. Reconstructing Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud in this way brings their work into conversation with conspiracy theories, which are themselves a type of suspicious explanation. Dole argues that conspiracy theories and other types of suspicious explanation are “cognitively ensnaring”, to borrow a term from Pascal Boyer. If they are true they are importantly true, but their truth or falsity can be very difficult to ascertain.
