This major new book - featuring the work of artists from Mornington Island Arts & Craft centre - explores, for the first time, the history and visual culture of the region and its wide ranging contemporary art movement. Founded by brothers Dick and Lindsay Roughsey in the 1960s, todays' artists of Mornington Island, off the far north Queensland coast, are creating fresh and exciting imagery. Alongside this, led by Sally Gabori, has developed a whole new school of joyous paintings by the Kaiadilt artists of nearby Bentinck Islands. Lavishly illustrated throughout the book features a stunning four page fold-out of a large collaborative painting and informative essays by Dr Paul Memmott and Dr Nicholas Evans and art writer Louise Martin-Chew, and with biographies of the leading exhibiting artists, The Heart of Everything is an in-depth exploration of the vibrant contemporary art of this fascinating region of Australia's far north.

Book Copperheads

  • Author : Jennifer L. Weber
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2006-10-09
  • ISBN : 0198041888
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Copperheads written by Jennifer L. Weber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northern home-front during the Civil War was far from tranquil. Fierce political debates set communities on edge, spurred secret plots against the Union, and triggered widespread violence. At the heart of all this turmoil stood the anti-war Democrats, nicknamed "Copperheads." Now, Jennifer L. Weber offers the first full-length portrait of this powerful faction to appear in almost half a century. Weber reveals how the Copperheads came perilously close to defeating Lincoln and ending the war in the South's favor. Indeed, by the summer of 1864, they had grown so strong that Lincoln himself thought his defeat was "exceedingly likely." Passionate defenders of civil liberties and states' rights--and often virulent racists--the Copperheads deplored Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus, his liberal interpretation of the Constitution, and, most vehemently, his moves toward emancipation. Weber reveals how the battle over these issues grew so heated that Northerners feared their neighbors would destroy their livestock, burn their homes, even kill them. And she illuminates the role of Union soldiers, who, furious at Copperhead attacks on the war effort, moved firmly behind Lincoln. The soldiers' support for the embattled president kept him alive politically in his darkest times, and their victories on the battlefield secured his re-election. Packed with sharp observation and fresh interpretations, Copperheads is a gripping account of the fierce dissent that Lincoln called "the fire in the rear."

Book Authenticity Autonomy and Multiculturalism

Download or read book Authenticity Autonomy and Multiculturalism written by Geoffrey Brahm Levey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of "authenticity" enters multicultural politics in three distinct but interrelated senses: as an ideal of individual and group identity that commands recognition by others; as a condition of individuals’ autonomy that bestows legitimacy on their values, beliefs and preferences as being their own; and as a form of cultural pedigree that bestows legitimacy on particular beliefs and practices (commonly called "cultural authenticity"). In each case, the authenticity idea is called on to anchor or legitimate claims to some kind of public recognition. The considerable work asked of this concept raises a number of vital questions: Should "authenticity" be accorded the importance it holds in multicultural politics? Do its pitfalls outweigh its utility? Is the notion of "authenticity" avoidable in making sense of and evaluating cultural claims? Or does it, perhaps, need to be rethought or recalibrated? Geoffrey Brahm Levey and his distinguished group of philosophers, political theorists, and anthropologists challenge conventional assumptions about "authenticity" that inform liberal responses to minority cultural claims in Western democracies today. Discussing a wide range of cases drawn from Britain and continental Europe, North America, Australia and the Middle East, they press beyond theories to consider also the practical and policy implications at stake. A helpful resource to scholars worldwide in Political and Social Theory, Political Philosophy, Legal Anthropology, Multiculturalism, and, more generally, of cultural identity and diversity in liberal democracies today.

Book Freedom Union and Power

Download or read book Freedom Union and Power written by Michael S. Green and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom, Union, and Power analyzes the beliefs of the Republican Party during the Civil War, how those beliefs changed, and what those changes foreshadowed for the future. The party's pre-war ideology of free soil, free labor, free men changed with the Republican ascent to power in the White House. With Lincoln's election, Republicans faced something new-responsibility for the government. With responsibility came the need to wage a war for the survival of that government, the country, and the party. And with victory in the war came responsibility responsibility for saving the Union-by ending slavery-and for pursuing policies that fit into their belief in a strong, free Union. Michael Green shows how Republicans had to wield federal power to stop a rebellion against freedom and union. Crucial to their use of federal power was their hope of keeping that power-the intersection of policy and politics.
