Book WWII Prisoner of War

Download or read book WWII Prisoner of War written by Len Kovar and published by Koho Pono LLC. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of Second Lieutenant Leonard J Kovar and his battle to survive as a prisoner of war during World War II, as told by him. Mr. Kovar was a bombardier/navigator on the plane Con Job when it was shot down on its 11th mission. His story begins with the aerial dogfight, continues as his plane is hit and he parachutes out in the middle of a dogfight and during his flight through enemy territory as he struggles to get back to Allied lines while facing heat, hunger, thirst, and death from enemy soldiers and angry civilians. It also details his eventual capture and his battle to survive imprisonment in spite of hunger, illness, and death marches. Mr. Kovar first wrote this story shortly after returning from the war. At around the same time, his mother also questioned him at length and wrote down the story of his experience in a piece for one of her classes. Mr. Kovar has taken his and his mother’s writings, along with several letters, wires, photographs and other items he collected from that period in his life, to complete his story. His is a candid telling of life as a prisoner of war at the end of World War II as he struggles to survive the death marches in advance of an oncoming Russian military push during the worst winter storm ever recorded in European history. He provides unique insight into the interactions between American and German soldiers that is rarely seen in this kind of story. He has left nothing out. This story is a fresh look at a war that has faded into history but has not faded from people’s minds.

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. Download or read book The Inner War written by Gerda Hartwich Robinson and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is sometimes difficult to remember that in war there are innocents on all sides who suffer. German citizens who had no connection to the atrocities committed by their countrymen nonetheless endured great hardships because of them. In The Inner War, author Gerda Hartwich Robinson narrates her story as a German survivor of World War II. She tells how her life’s journey included hunger, fear, neglect, and physical and emotional abuse, and how she carried these injustices in her mind and body for many years, leading to debilitating back pain, headaches, panic attacks, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. In this touching memoir, Robinson shows that the tragedies of war don’t end when the last bomb is dropped or the last prisoner freed; they continue in subtle but devastating ways. Like many German citizens during and after the war, Robinson was simply trying to survive a terrifying situation she had nothing to do with. She describes how her spirit was devastated by hopelessness, and how she entertained thoughts of suicide. The Inner War shares lessons she learned at a chronic pain rehabilitation center that allowed her to start on a path to peace and love.

This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase "The British are coming" is attributed to Paul Revere, a colonial Boston silversmith and patriot who was among several riders who sounded the alarm that the British Regulars were coming to attack the American colonies. On the night of April 18, 1775, Revere and William Dawes set out on horseback from Boston to warn the colonists that the British were planning to march on Concord to seize American military supplies. Revere rode through the countryside, waking sleeping towns and farms, and shouting his famous warning, "The British are coming! The British are coming!" remains an iconic symbol of American rebellion and a war cry to all American citizen soldiers. Citizen Soldiers defend themselves and their homeland against a numerically superior and better-armed invading force or host governments and dictatorships gone crazy. While they might be outgunned in larger battles, Citizen Soldiers can create an advantage over the invaders[ce1] [HM2] in smaller encounters with an intimate knowledge of the countryside, time to prepare defenses, and support from the local population. The most critical mindset for a Citizen Soldier is preparation and relentless awareness of the threats to his homeland. Today’s civilian is tomorrow’s Citizen Soldier[ce3] [HM4] , and you can begin training to learn the necessary skills. From marksmanship to fieldcraft, camouflage, disguise, covert communications, cyber safety, escape routes, navigation, etc., the time to start learning is now. [ce1]We should include both invaders or host governments gone bad so we appeal to the south American countries... maybe round our verbiage to Adversaries / Governments... [HM2]Great point... I added to the text. [ce3]Great BLUF [HM4]Thank you

The ship is sailing unescorted, assured by headquarters the waters are safe. It is midnight, and Marine Edgar Harrell and several others have sacked out on deck rather than spend the night in their hot and muggy quarters below. Fresh off a top-secret mission to deliver uranium for the atomic bombs that would ultimately end World War II, they are unaware their ship is being watched. Minutes later, six torpedoes are slicing toward the Indy . . . For five horrifying days and nights after their ship went down, Harrell and his shipmates had to fend for themselves in the open seas. Plagued by dehydration, exposure, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks, their numbers were cruelly depleted before they were miraculously rescued. This is one man's story of courage, ingenuity, and faith in God's providence in the midst of the worst naval disaster in U.S. history.

With dreams of flying, they enlisted from all across America, eager to defeat the Japanese and bring an end to the war. Most were no more than 21 or 22 years old, fresh from pilot training, with quick reflexes, sharp eyes, and keen intelligence. And when they crashed, they needed every physical and mental advantage to survive. Their ordeals began with blunt-force impact with the sea. From overhead, a hail of bullets from enemy planes. From below, the imminent danger of shark attack. Then the ongoing perils of drowning, exposure, heat, storms, and capture. Two out of three airmen who survived their crashes were forever lost. The lucky ones lived to tell these amazing stories. The creator of the "Lost Histories of World War II" series and cofounder of The Military Channel, editor L. Douglas Keeney reviewed hundreds of reels of microfilm from the archives of Maxwell Air Force Base’s History Center, searching out the most captivating first-person accounts among the crash-and-rescue reports from WWII’s Pacific Theater. Each of these 23 previously unpublished narratives, recounted in the airman’s own words, tells a true-life tale that’s stranger than any fiction. Each forms a testament to human resilience, character, and fortitude. All offer inspiring new insights into the heroics of the vanishing generation whose valor will live forever.

Book We Don t Talk About That

Download or read book We Don t Talk About That written by Giselle Roeder and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is more like a history rather than a memoir. It starts after WWI and outlines the changes in many European countries' social makeup, particularly in post-war Germany. Unemployment and staggering inflation where half a loaf of bread cost billions and two beers a mere one-hundred billion led to the rise of Adolf Hitler, an Austrian man. He promised work and bread and kept his promises. The following years brought a tremendous upswing in life but also carried Germany into WWII. Six years of war devastated great cities, and millions of people lost their lives. The invasion of eastern Germany by the Russian army brought horror through unspeakable atrocities to the ordinary people. While most survivors' attitude is "we don't talk about that," the author has found the courage to place her memories on record.Growing up in a rural village in Pomerania, which became part of Poland after the war, the authors' (Gila) tranquil life turned tragic when the fighting approached her neighbourhood. The Russians took her father and all 16 to 60-year-old healthy people, men and women, to Siberia while her mother and siblings were evicted and became displaced persons. They joined the trek of thousands 'on the road to nowhere.' Gila was witness to gruesome acts of violence quickly ageing her beyond her years. She barely survived diphtheria, and later, recovering from typhoid fever, she took responsibility for her three younger siblings while her mother worked. Despite her interrupted schooling through circumstances beyond her control, Gila's determination empowered her to become a Physical Education teacher and successful competitive kayaker. Gila lived the first ten years of her life under the Nazis and her teenage years under communist rule. Germany's final division into East and West with its political ramifications caused her to escape to West Germany. Here she was able to fulfill an old dream despite facing new challenges, including an unwanted affair. Gila's story is one of heartache, courage, pain, love, liberation and reclaiming life.
