Book Surviving Transformation

Download or read book Surviving Transformation written by Vincent P. Barabba and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did a major corporation manage to turn itself around while Wall Street and others continued to predict its slow death? The answer may surprise you, and it provides a model for corporate transformation for any company or government agency operating in a world of accelerating change. The company is General Motors, and this book tells how it was able to change the way important decisions were made, leading to resurgence in business across its many product lines. At the beginning of the 1990s, GM was perceived by nearly everyone as falling behind its competitors at an alarming rate. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, though, the company had come storming back with successful new automobiles and new business concepts that captured new markets, while simultaneously holding on to many of its existing customers. What GM did is not just the story of a single automaker, but rather a compelling insight into an approach for any business organization that is faced with the need for a true transformation. As many companies have discovered, efforts at transformation too often fail. GM's successful transformation illustrates the importance of management's ability to change its mindset and make the tough decisions that revitalize business with bold new products and business concepts. At the heart of successful transformation is the imagination, courage and leadership required to visualize the kind of company an organization wants to become and then work toward that goal. With the destination set and understood by those who will need to implement the changes, decision-makers find it less difficult to overcome impediments to achieving their goal while finding creative ways of doing what may seem impossible. The lessons from GMs turnaround can help any business organization change and keep pace with today's turbulent marketplace.

Book Violence Inequality and Transformation Apartheid Survivors on South Africa s Ongoing Transition

Download or read book Violence Inequality and Transformation Apartheid Survivors on South Africa s Ongoing Transition written by Jasmina Brankovic and published by DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its lauded political transition in 1994, South Africa continues to have among the highest levels of violence and inequality in the world. Organised survivors of apartheid violations have long maintained that we cannot adequately address violence in the country, let alone achieve full democracy, without addressing inequality. This book is built around extensive quotes from members of Khulumani Support Group, the apartheid survivors' social movement, and young people growing up in Khulumani families. It shows how these survivors, who bridge the past and the present through their activism, understand and respond to socioeconomic drivers of violence. Pointing to the continuities between apartheid oppression and post-apartheid marginalisation in everyday life, the narratives detail ways in which the democratic dispensation has strengthened barriers to social transformation and helped enable violence. They also present strategies for effecting change through collaboration, dialogue and mutual training and through partnerships with diverse stakeholders that build on local-level knowledge and community-based initiatives. The lens of violence offers new and manageable ways to think about reducing inequality, while the lens of inequality shows that violence is a complex web of causes, pathways and effects that requires a big-picture approach to unravel. The survivors' narratives suggest innovative strategies for promoting a just transition through people-driven transformation that go well beyond the constraints of South Africa's transitional justice practice to date. A result of participatory research conducted in collaboration with and by Khulumani members, this book will be of interest to activists, students, researchers and policy makers working on issues of transitional justice, inequality and violence.

Book The Years of Jesuit Suppression 1773 1814 Survival Setbacks and Transformation

Download or read book The Years of Jesuit Suppression 1773 1814 Survival Setbacks and Transformation written by Paul Shore and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forty-one years between the Society of Jesus’s papal suppression in 1773 and its eventual restoration in 1814 remain controversial, with new research and interpretations continually appearing. Shore’s narrative approaches these years, and the period preceding the suppression, from a new perspective that covers individuals not usually discussed in works dealing with this topic. As well as examining the contributions of former Jesuits to fields as diverse as ethnology—a term and concept pioneered by an ex-Jesuit—and library science, where Jesuits and ex-Jesuits laid the groundwork for the great advances of the nineteenth century, the essay also explores the period the exiled Society spent in the Russian Empire. It concludes with a discussion of the Society’s restoration in the broader context of world history.

Book The Great Shift Psycho spiritual Manual for Survival and Transformation in the Trump Era

Download or read book The Great Shift Psycho spiritual Manual for Survival and Transformation in the Trump Era written by Melinda Contreras-Byrd and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a US-based, prophetic-themed, “race” and culture-focused work which will serve to foster discussion on several important topics for Christians seeking to live out their faith in this present socio-political era. The foundational belief underlying this book is that we are living in an era of unique possibilities for the church to begin to make second-order changes in our views of Christianity, the church universal, and the real life applications of theological concepts of evil and spiritual warfare as they apply to the struggles of this time in history. For Black people in the United States, racism has long been the elephant in the room during most Black/White interactions on any level. Growing expressions of racism have now forced the elephant not only to the forefront of White discourse, but the elephant now sits comfortably at the altar railing of both Black and White church sanctuaries. This book argues that we are at a critical time for action, and gives suggestions for what at least some of those educational, theological and psychological actions could be.

Book Pivot Disrupt Transform

Download or read book Pivot Disrupt Transform written by Marcia Daszko and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the status quo no longer works, the contrarian perspective reigns! In this innovative business how-to, leadership expert Marcia Daszko draws on her expertise to guide leaders at any level through a three-step process to radically improve their businesses: first, recognize and stop outmoded ways of thinking that fail to move the business forward (like focusing on the bottom line, conducting performance appraisals, and searching for best practices); second, start taking steps to introduce new, innovative ways of thinking and contrarian practices (such as developing leaders with the capacity to effect change, creating an interconnected team, and seeking knowledge through questions); and finally, transform your company into a more resilient, adaptive, and united organization. Recent studies have reported that 90% of start-ups will fail. In Silicon Valley alone, this means that more than 5,400 of the current 6,000 startups will flounder and disappear. But risky and cash-strapped start-ups are not the only corporate fatalities: More than 60% of the original Fortune 500 corporations no longer exist. Given these statistics, how can organizational leaders and their employees beat the odds and survive? The only solution is to question the usual business practices, re-think how to lead and inspire, challenge the accepted beliefs, and toss out the failures to accelerate business growth and profitability. Using Marcia's three-part stop, start, transform method, readers will learn to pursue significant untapped opportunities, achieve their organization's competitive edge, and pivot, disrupt, and adapt to unexpected levels of success.

Book The Transformation Myth

Download or read book The Transformation Myth written by Gerald C. Kane and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this business bestseller, how companies can adapt in an era of continuous disruption: a guide to responding to such acute crises as COVID-19. Gold Medalist in Business Disruption/Reinvention. When COVID-19 hit, businesses had to respond almost instantaneously--shifting employees to remote work, repairing broken supply chains, keeping pace with dramatically fluctuating customer demand. They were forced to adapt to a confluence of multiple disruptions inextricably linked to a longer-term, ongoing digital disruption. This book shows that companies that use disruption as an opportunity for innovation emerge from it stronger. Companies that merely attempt to "weather the storm" until things go back to normal (or the next normal), on the other hand, miss an opportunity to thrive. The authors, all experts on business and technology strategy, show that transformation is not a one-and-done event, but a continuous process of adapting to a volatile and uncertain environment. Drawing on five years of research into digital disruption--including a series of interviews with business leaders conducted during the COVID-19 crisis--they offer a framework for understanding disruption and tools for navigating it. They outline the leadership traits, business principles, technological infrastructure, and organizational building blocks essential for adapting to disruption, with examples from real-world organizations. Technology, they remind readers, is not an end in itself, but enables the capabilities essential for surviving an uncertain future: nimbleness, scalability, stability, and optionality.

Download or read book Beyond Survival written by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative justice seeks to solve the problem of violence at the grassroots level, without relying on punishment, incarceration, or policing. Community-based approaches to preventing crime and repairing its damage have existed for centuries. However, in the putative atmosphere of contemporary criminal justice systems, they are often marginalized and operate under the radar. Beyond Survival puts these strategies front and center as real alternatives to today’s failed models of confinement and “correction.” In this collection, a diverse group of authors focuses on concrete and practical forms of redress and accountability, assessing existing practices and marking paths forward. They use a variety of forms—from toolkits to personal essays—to delve deeply into the “how to” of transformative justice, providing alternatives to calling the police, ways to support people having mental health crises, stories of community-based murder investigations, and much more. At the same time, they document the history of this radical movement, creating space for long-time organizers to reflect on victories, struggles, mistakes, and transformations.
