Book Suffering and the Heart of God

Download or read book Suffering and the Heart of God written by Diane Langberg and published by New Growth Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She's seen slave dungeons in Ghana. Genocide in Rwanda. Systemic sexual abuse in Brazil. Child abuse and domestic violence in the US. After forty years of counseling abuse survivors around the world, Dr. Diane Langberg, a world renowned trauma expert, remains certain that what trauma destroys, Christ can and does restore. This book will convince you, too, of the healing heart of God. But it's not a fast process, instead much patience is required from family, friends, and counselors as they wisely and respectfully help victims unpack their traumatic suffering through talking, tears, and time. And it's not a process that can be separated from the work of God in both a counselor and counselee. Dr. Langberg calls all of those who wish to help sufferers to model Jesus's sacrificial love and care in how they listen, love, and guide. The heart of God is revealed to sufferers as they grow to understand the cross of Christ and how their God came to this earth and experienced such severe suffering that he too is "well-acquainted with grief." The cross of Christ is the lens that transforms and redeems traumatic suffering and its aftermath, not only for the sufferer, but it also transforms those who walk with the suffering. This book will be a great help to anyone who loves, listens to, and seeks to help someone impacted by trauma and abuse. There is no quick fix, but there is the hope for healing through the love of God in Christ.

Book We Were the Least of These

Download or read book We Were the Least of These written by Elaine A. Heath and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is written about abuse and the Bible focuses on the ways Scripture is used to hurt rather than heal. This accessibly written book provides a much-needed perspective, illuminating the good news of healing and liberation that the Bible offers survivors of sexual abuse. As a theologian and survivor of abuse herself, Elaine Heath handles this sensitive topic with compassion and grace. She offers a close reading of several biblical passages that have proven to be profoundly healing for her and for other survivors. The book is illustrated with stories and insights from sexual abuse survivors who have experienced healing through the Bible in order to bring hope and encouragement to victims. It will be welcome reading for those who have suffered from abuse as well as for pastors, counselors, therapists, and others who minister to them. Each chapter ends with two sets of reflection questions and recommended activities--one set for survivors and another for those who journey with them.

Book Surviving Abuse

Download or read book Surviving Abuse written by Marie Cook and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little girl hides, quietly crying and listening to her brother's sharp howls of pain and pleas to stop as their mother beats him. She hopes she is not next. But she knows it won't be long; she can't hide forever. There is no way to escape. Life was not always this way for Marie Cook and her family. She once lived in the suburbs of Detroit, and life was wonderful. After moving outside of Detroit, something snapped and her mom began physically and mentally abusing her children. And her father turned a blind eye to the abuse that was going on in his own home. When she couldn't trust her earthly father to protect her, how could she have faith in her heavenly Father? It was not until years later that she would have a relationship with God, and it was this relationship that brought understanding. In Surviving Abuse: A Journey to Forgiveness and Freedom, Marie Cook shares her horrifying story of abuse with readers so that they might be inspired and, yes, forgive those who have wounded them, as difficult as it will be, to get their hearts on the right track and start living in total freedom. Marie Cook lives in Michigan with her husband.

Will I get past the pain? Do I matter to God? These and similar questions can carve a deep hole in an already wounded soul. Too often, the lies of worthlessness are believed, the pain becomes too much to handle, and survivors find themselves making choices that lead to more heartbreak. With over 42 million survivors (both male and female) in the United States alone, the need for a clear path to healing is great. Crystal Sutherland—herself a survivor of CSA—knows that while the recovery process is complex, healing is possible with God’s help. For women who want to progress from simply coping to living abundantly, Journey to Heal guides readers through seven essential steps to recovery found in Scripture. Candid and open about her personal journey of healing, Crystal comes alongside her reader as a friend who understands. Infused with biblical truths, stories of hope from other survivors, and practical wisdom, this book leads women to discover the life of wholeness God has for them.

Book Naming Our Abuse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Schmutzer
  • Publisher : Kregel Publications
  • Release : 2016-04-27
  • ISBN : 0825444004
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Naming Our Abuse written by Andrew Schmutzer and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunningly vulnerable look at the horrific realities of sexual abuse and how to overcome them Male sexual abuse is increasingly in the news, from scandals in the Catholic Church to exploitations at Penn State. Yet books and programs about healing are still overwhelmingly oriented toward the female survivor of abuse. As men who experienced childhood abuse, the authors of this book are uniquely qualified to address the healing process of male survivors. Using the metaphor of a car accident, Naming Our Abuse leads the survivor from the Wreck to the Accident Report to Rehabilitation to Driving Again. This four-step model illustrates that healing is a process to be nurtured rather than something that can be healed in a single telling. Following the authors' examples, readers are invited to find solidarity with other male survivors and develop an understanding of their own wounding through journaling exercises. “Rarely has a book about a subject so difficult and taboo left me feeling so encouraged and hopeful. Three different stories of deep personal pain, woven together to tell a story not only of survival but of fullness of life we can all hope for.” —Steve LePore, Founder and Executive Director, 1in6

Book Understanding Sexual Abuse

Download or read book Understanding Sexual Abuse written by Tim Hein and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It is said that the true test of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable members.” As many as one in four girls and one in six boys experience sexual abuse during childhood, and it’s estimated that as many as half of the incidents are never reported. This means that countless millions in our societies, both children and adults, carry this complex, often hidden pain. What does the path to healing look like for survivors? And how can ministry leaders, pastors, and counselors best help them as they walk this difficult road? Drawing on both his own experience and his wife's experience as survivors of childhood sexual abuse, minister and lecturer Tim Hein offers his expertise, practical guidance, and empathy—both for ministry leaders and for survivors themselves. How can we best respond when a survivor shares their secret with us? Where can survivors turn for encouragement when the road to recovery seems so long and lonely? Hein presents clinical data and resources alongside pastoral wisdom and care, addressing both psychological and spiritual aspects of sexual abuse. Both for those who have suffered sexual abuse and those in a position to help them, this book is a rich resource. Filled with both sober truths and the hope of Christ, it calls survivors to take courage and walk unafraid down the road of healing.

Book Rock Bottom and Faithless

Download or read book Rock Bottom and Faithless written by Sue Parisher and published by Savio Republic. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being separated from my abusive husband didn’t make me a domestic violence survivor. It surely didn’t release me from the grip of his brainwashing control and the innate power he had over me. As I started putting my shattered life back together after being separated from my abuser, I still felt his compelling control shaping my every thought and action. I didn’t feel like a domestic violence survivor just because I was no longer with my abuser. In fact, I felt like a remotely-controlled, confused puppet still shaken by residual influences in my mind. In order to become a true survivor, knowing that the thoughts in my head were mine, I had to: · Identify the deeply rooted lies of my abuser that I believed were true · Extract the lies · Lean on God’s strength to defeat the lies and replace them with His word · Acknowledge that the trauma experienced from the abuse left physical and emotional scars that needed to be furthered explored Eleven years later, being a domestic violence survivor means being free and open to living again. It means I am open to making decisions, building trusting relationships again, and eventually feeling love again. It means that the thoughts in my head are mine and mine only. With the emotional abuse removed from my mind, God’s grace and love have taken over. It's a calmness and peace I never thought possible.
